40th Annual Statewide Exhibition September 28–October 28, 2007 The Academy Art Center at Linekona, Honolulu In September, John Natsoulas, owner of the John Natsoulas Center for the Arts in Davis, California traveled to Hilo, Kona, Maui, Kauai and Oahu to jury work, provide slide lectures, and meet Hawai‘i artists. John noted that the “camaraderie among all the artists, the diversity in the work and the stretch of artists to include all the racial diversity of this beautiful land was extremely encouraging.” The invited artists for this year’s exhibition were Pat Kramer (wood), Brenda May Ching (jewelry), and Steve Martin (clay). This year Hawai‘i Craftsmen was also honored to have Tom Klobe, Director Emeritus of the University of Hawai‘i Art Gallery as installation designer. His work and the dedication of the volunteers created an unusually creative exhibition. Tom’s design incorporated twists, turns, and niches so that viewers were constantly surprised. The 2007 exhibition saw the inauguration of a new annual award, the John Natsoulas Purchase Award. We were also fortunate to be able to continue the W.R. Hancock Award for ceramics as well as the traditional Hawai‘i Craftsmen Awards of Excellence. All awards are selected by the juror. Hawaii Craftsmen Award Winners W.R. uncommon objects Don’t miss the new exhibit titled uncommon objects, which opened November 2 at the Hawai‘i State Art Museum (HiSAM) and was curated by Stacey Uradomo-Barre. The show is a celebration of the State Foundation Culture Art’s collection of craft purchased over the past 40 years. Many of our founding members and current members have work represented in this astonishing exhibition. The beginning of this exhibition was inspired by Linda von Geldern and Kim Coffee-Isaac years ago. Hawai‘i Craftsmen was involved with assisting in planning this exhibit. Hawai‘i Craftsmen board members Richard Duggan, Liz Train, Marcia Morse, and Diana Tusher worked with HiSAM staff for over a year to help transform their vision into reality. HiSAM also offers a number of outreach programs open to the general public. Hawai‘i Craftsmen member Susan Hogan is responsible for public education programs. Recently, Marcia Morse spoke at a HiSAM ArtLunch on Tradition and Innovation: The Legacy of Hawai‘i Craftsmen. Look for other presentations Hawai‘i Craftsmen is helping to organize in conjunction with the exhibition.

Elephant for the PrincessWe appreciate the many entries from Hawai‘i Craftsmen members for the Call to Artists to create an elephant image as a gift to the Princess of Thailand. In February 2008, the East-West Center will present a Lifetime Achievement Award to His Majesty, the King of Thailand. Her Royal Highness, Princess Maha Chakri Sirindhorn will attend the ceremony to accept the award on behalf of her father. Jean Ariyoshi, Former First Lady of Hawai‘i and the East-West Scholarship Committee chose sculptor, Steve Turnbull of Maui, to carve an abstract elephant sculpture out of koa wood. He will be invited to attended the Ceremony in February, when his artwork will be presented to the Princess. Congratulations Steve!
