    Basic Run Game Skills

    Jab Step 6 Inch Step

    Start momentum forward

    Keep good base

    Outside Foot Helps keep outside arm free

    in case of Iso/Dive

    Allows read step to be withinside foot

    Read Step 1 Foot Step

    Keep momentum forward

    Back into original stance

    Inside Foot Allows 3rd step to be with

    outside foot to keep OAF ona run your way

    Allows inside foot to bepushed off of to go into passcoverage

    Fill 3rd Step Straight Ahead

    Toe points to outside of hole

    Accelerate to the LOS

    Meet the ball or lead blocker atthe LOS in the hole

    Keep Proper Leverage Keep outside arm free (OAF)

    Intermediate Run Game Skills

    Runthrough While scraping, sprint into

    first open gap and stay onthe back hip of your key

    Flatten out and pursue withproper leverage based onyour run read and thelocation of the ballcarrier You are running through this

    gap as a shortcut to get tothe football

    Do not penetrate deeper thanthe heels of the offensive line

    Force Player responsible for forcing

    the ball inside vs. the run You cannot allow the ball to

    get outside of you If the ball cuts inside, youhave done your job

    Set the edge on any run playand force the ball back inside

    Use correctarm technique totake on any blockers Keeps your outside arm free

    and the ball inside of you

    Heel Line Never penetrate deeper than

    the heels of the line on a runread

    Close the cutback lane andpursue to the football

    Dont open up another laneunderneath you by gettingtoo deep in the backfield

    Run the play down frombehind and play withleverage looking for cutback

    Advanced Run Game Skills

    Frontside Punch Use the fist on the helmet

    side to punch upward at thefootball

    Ballcarrier gets ball awayfrom his ribs before contact

    All footwork leading up to thetackle the same as for anangle tackle or a head tohead tackle Single upward punch at the

    football immediately beforewrapping the ballcarrier

    Frontside Rip Use one or two hands to grab

    one nose of the football andrip it from the ballcarrier

    One hand if momentum ofballcarrier has not stoppedand you need to use inside to help secure tackle

    Two hands if momentum ofballcarrier has been stoppedand you do not need tosecure the tackle anymore

    Grip the nose of the ball nearthe ribs and rip downward

    Backside Punch Use the fist away from the

    helmet side to punch upwardat the football

    Ballcarrier gets ball behindor away from his ribs

    All footwork leading up to thetackle the same as for anangle tackle, trail tackle, or90 degree tackle Single upward punch at the

    football immediately beforewrapping the ballcarrier

    Backside Rip Use one or two hands to grab

    one nose of the football andrip it from the ballcarrier

    Basic Block Destruction

    Wrongarm When there is Sky or Cloud

    Force outside of you Use your outside arm and

    leg to attack the inside of the blocker and spill

    If the ball comes inside Shed the block and make

    the tackle

    If the ball spills outside Run heel-line and pursue

    inside-out to the football

    Correctarm When there is Buck or Elk

    Force on your side Use your inside arm and

    leg to attack the outside of the blocker and force

    If the ball cuts inside Run heel-line and pursue

    outside-in to the football

    If the ball tries to bounce Shed the block and make

    the tackle

    Spin-Out When your wrongarm has

    forced the ball to spill to theoutside and you need topursue from the inside

    Plant on your wrongarmfoot and spin toward yourown goaline to releasefrom the block

    Chase down the heel-lineand take an appropriateangle for a 90 tackle or atrail tackle

    Spin-In When your correctarm has

    forced the ball to cut backinside and you need to

    pursue from the outside Plant on your correctarmfoot and spin toward yourown goaline to releasefrom the block

    Advanced Block Destruction

    Club & Rip Use when blocker attacks in

    space and gets his shouldersturned

    Attack his back to get pastthe block and into run lane

    Make a fist with inside hand Club just under the shoulder

    pad of the blocker to knockhim off-balance

    Outside arm rips underneath Rip tight off of the blocker

    and get back on your angle

    to make a play on the ball

    Downward Swipe Use when blocker attacks in

    space and gets hands out infront or gets his hands inside

    and below yours #1 priority is to get back youradvantage with your hands

    Violent downward swipe tobreak the wrists or elbows Break the wrists if in space

    and blocker reaching for you

    If blocker already has handcontact, swipe downward at

    elbows and get inside handplacement on your blocker

    Strike & Pull Use when blocker attacks in

    Basic Pass Drop Skills

    Jump Turn Open Hips

    Small jump to turn hips andpoint toes in direction ofzone responsibility

    Get hips and shoulders inthe direction of the drop

    Get Into Drop Swivel head back and forth

    from backfield & pass read

    Drop depends on pass readand QB drop depth

    Settle Square Hips to the LOS

    Must be able to move bothdirections as patterns breakdown and the QB looks forhis receivers

    Keep Aware of Screen/Draw Recognize and retrace steps

    if screen or draw develop

    Buzz Feet Keep feet moving and in the

    powerclean position so youcan move and break on the

    football

    Drop with QBs Feet Keep Dropping

    If the QB is still dropping, hisWRs are still gaining depth

    Get Depth and Width Depth = Drop as long as theQB is dropping

    Width = Based on your passread and coverage rules

    When the QB Stops Settle and Drift

    Drift with QBs Eyes Once settled, shuffle in the

    direction the QB is looking If he is looking outside of

    you, drift to outside If he is looking inside of you,drift to inside

    Get underneath routes thatare developing behind you You dont need to see the

    routes behind you at thispoint

    Buzz Feet Chop Feet in Place

    Maintain powerclean stance

    Be ready to break on the ball

    or reroute a receiver Use when apexed in place of

    jab & read steps and in settle

    Drive When read breaks to your

    zone, accelerate to the hip ofthe receiver Looking for interception Hip depends on coverage

    and responsibility

    Go through inside shoulder of

    any in-breaking routes by theoutside receiver

    Sink If QB continues to drop after

    you drive a route Double move coming

    Protect against double move Angle Pedal to outside and

    stay underneath the route

    Outside Leverage Playing a receiver or

    defending a zone from theoutside-in

    Force the QB to throw to theinside shoulder

    Force the WR to run insideafter the catch

    Advanced Pass Drop Skills

    Near Swat When driving on the football,

    swat the ball down with thehand near the QB

    Turn shoulders to avoidcontacting the receiver andreach in front of his body tobreak up pass

    Use far arm to secure thetackle in case you miss thefootball with the near hand Have far arm ready to wrap

    around backside and near

    arm will go directly intowrap on frontside if youmiss the swat

    Speed Turn If you get caught facing one

    way and the ball goes overyour head, you do not turn

    back inside to find the ball Turning inside will stop your

    momentum and you cannotaccelerate back fast enough

    Turn your back to the QB,whip your head around to theoutside and track the ballfrom there Find the Ball = Get the pick

    Cant Find Ball = Use thearm slap or basket punch

    Arm Slap Use your near arm to slap at

    the near arm of the receiver Slap downward and pull

    the receivers near handdown toward the ground

    Force the receiver to makea one handed catch

    Time the slap with thearrival of the football toavoid pass interference

    Far arm should secure the tacklejust like the Near Swat

    If he makes a one handedcatch, pull him down by hisarm and the backside hip

    Basket Punch Punch with your inside hand

    up through the receiversbasket as he tries to bring

    the ball down Use when the receiver can

    out-jump you or is bringingthe ball down in theprocess of making a catch

    Outside arm should secure thetackle just like the Near Swat

    If he catches it and bringsit in, you need to bring him

    Move = Speed Rush Get off the ball quickly.

    Rip inside arm underneathoutside arm of blocker.

    Lean into the blocker. Keep outside arm free.

    Counter = Spin Inside Setup Speed Rush.

    Rip inside arm to outside shouldeof blocker.

    Throw outside elbow backward. Spin back inside blocker.

    Move = Bull RushAttack center of blocker.

    Drop hips and get leverage.

    Strike breastplate of blockerwith both hands.

    Extend and drive into the QB.

    Counter = Push Pull Setup Bull Rush.

    Drop hips and get leverage.

    Bull Rush until blocker stopsmomentum or leans too far.

    Pull linemen and step past.

    Move = Rip Under Rush 2 steps upfield.

    Club with inside arm to liftinside shoulder of blocker.

    Rip inside with outside arm. Keep outside arm free.

    Counter = Spin Outside Setup Rip Under.

    After the club, rip outside arm toinside shoulder of blocker.

    Throw inside elbow backward. Spin back outside blocker.
