STEROIDS

Most people consider any sports enhancement product

a steroid. This is false. A steroid is a type of

organic compound that contains a characteristic

arrangement of four cycloalkane rings that are joined

to each other. Examples of steroids include the dietary

fat cholesterol, the sex hormones estradiol and

testosterone, and the anti-inflammatory drug

dexamethasone.

THE HISTORY OF STEROIDS

In the early 1930s, German scientists discovered the drug in

modern pharmaceutical form. Almost 2 decades later the first

serious scientific attention to anabolic steroid came upon in 1950s

when methandrostenolone or Dianabol was approved by the FDA for

use in US in 1958 after it was known to have had promising trials in

other countries. In 1972 a study was done. No big difference could

be noticed between the people who received anabolic steroid

injection and those who were given placebo. Later in 1996, the

National Institutes of Health decided to examine the effect of the

drug by injecting testosterone enanthate in high doses

intramuscularly at the rate of 600 mg/week for 10 weeks. The

results were very noticeable with increased muscle mass and

decreased fat mass. As of January 20, 2005, the Anabolic Steroid

Control Act of 2004, states that both anabolic steroids and

prohormones are now controlled substances.

ANABOLIC STEROIDS

The steroids we hear about the most are

Anabolic Steroids. Anabolic Steroids are drugs

that mimic the effects of testosterone and

dihydrotestosterone in the body. They increase

protein synthesis within cells, which results in

the buildup of cellular tissue (anabolism),

especially in muscles. The know side effects of

steroids include hair growth, acne, testicular

atrophy, deepened voice, high blood pressure,

and dangerous changes to the left ventricle of

the heart.

HGH

HGH is a peptide hormone that stimulates growth, cell

reproduction and regeneration in humans and other

animals. Growth hormone is a 191-amino acid, single-chain

polypeptide that is synthesized, stored, and secreted by the

somatotroph cells within the pituitary gland. Growth

hormone is used as a prescription drug in medicine to treat

children's growth disorders and adult growth hormone

deficiency. Many of the functions of hgh are unknown.

PERFORMANCE ENHANCERS AND BODY BUILDING

• There has been tons of controversy between bodybuilding and the use of performance enhancers. Bodybuilders use drugs such as anabolic steroids and precursor substances such as prohormones to increase muscle hypertrophy. Other performance enhancing substances used by competitive bodybuilders include human growth hormone (HGH), which can cause acromegaly.

STEROID CON’S

Many people frown upon steroids.

They say there bad for you and they

will mess you up. People blame

steroids for suicides and for being

aggressive(roid rage) and for some

types of cancer. Lyle alzado blamed

his 16 years of steroid use for his

brain tumor There has been no direct

link between any of these allegations.

STEROID PRO’S

When you think of steroids you think of a nasty

illegal drug that gets people huge. When people

with muscle wasting or aids or even cancer

patients think of steroids they think of a life

saver. Steroids have been used to treat people

with muscle wasting or aids by increasing the

muscle mass and increasing t cells. In these

peoples minds steroids are a miracle drug.

SHOULD STEROIDS BE LEGAL?

Some people argue that steroids should be legal. If you think about

it they shouldn't be. They don’t alter your mind or get you “high”.

They don’t effect you like drugs such as marijuana or heroin do.

Steroids enhance your performance. I understand why cocaine and

other drugs like that are illegal. You can overdose on those and they

cause people to committee crime and get murdered. You cant over

dose on steroids and there isn't really a big drug trade or drug mafia

with steroids. The people that think badly are just jealous they don’t

look like Arnold or anyone that uses steroids.

CHRIS BENOIT MURDER SUICIDE

On June 25, 2007 police found chris benoit

and his son and wife dead in there house.

Evidence showed that benoit had killed his son

and wife then killed himself. It was thought

that an excessive use of steroids had caused

him to do what he did. Later tests showed that

the steroids in his system didn’t cause his

actions but head injuries he sustained

throughout his years of wrestling caused him to

do it.

MLB STEROID SCANDAL

Numerous baseball players have stated that there is drug use

within the league. David Wells stated that "25 to 40 percent of

all Major Leaguers are juiced". Jose Canseco stated on

60 Minutes and in his tell-all book Juiced that as many as 80%

of players used steroids, and that he credited steroid use for

his entire career. In February 2009 after statements came out

that Alex Rodriguez tested positive for steroids in 2003 the

year he was MVP. He admitted to having used performance

enhancing drugs (PEDs) between 2001 and 2003. Mark

McGwire admitted in January 2010 that he had used steroids

off and on for over a decade. Including in 1998 when he

set the single-season home run record.
