Storm season is upon us.Unless your insurance com-pany is requiring you to,

chances are you may have notthought about your roof. The roofingsystem is often overlooked until thereis a problem. Your home’s integritydemands a functional roofing systembecause this storm season will mostlikely test it.

It has been 20 years sinceHurricane Andrew hit South Floridaon August 24th 1992. This deadly cat-egory 5 hurricane caused an estimat-ed 6 feet storm surge that hit theMiami coastline with winds reportedat 165 miles per hour and gustsexceeding 200 miles per hour. Out ofthe 1,176 mobile homes inHomestead only 9 remained after thestorm. And with over 25 billion dol-lars in damage and over 600,000insurance claims filed we are stillfeeling the effects of higher Hurricanepremiums.

Building Codes have evolved overthe years and the South FloridaBuilding Code became a standard inthe 1990’s. In 2001 the FloridaBuilding Code became effectivestatewide in March 2002. Thisallowed the State to supersede vari-ous local building codes that differedin each municipality.

Locally in Brevard we felt thedestruction of the 2004 HurricaneSeason. Insurance wind losses fromthe four storms named Charley,Frances, Ivan and Jeanne totaled over17 billion dollars and 1.7 millioninsurance claims filed according tothe Florida Insurance Council.

All of these losses and claimshave a direct effect on our insurancepremiums and construction materialexpenses. Roofing shingle prices have

more than doubled since the 2004Hurricane season. Many homeown-ers have sticker shock when getting aroofing replacement estimate eventhough there are financing optionsavailable to consumers.

Homeowners can prolong theirroofing system with a little mainte-nance. Like anything else preventa-tive maintenance will go a long waysaving you money. Common roofproblems include backed up nails, ridge vent issues and plumbingstacks damaged by animals and envi-ronmental elements.

Roof cleanings need to be com-pleted by reputable companies. Onemajor issue is pressure washing shin-gles which can cause premature gran-ule loss and shingle deterioration. Itis highly recommend to call a rep-utable licensed roofing company tomake repairs to ensure further dam-age does not occur. I have seennumerous homeowners having toreplace a roof only a few years oldbecause of poor installation.

It is also important to use qualitymaterials when repairing or replacingyour roof. Cutting corners to savemoney can surely have disastrouseffects while compromising theintegrity of your roof and the con-tents within your home. Water dam-age is the number one reason ahomeowner’s claim. Preventativemaintenance is your best line ofdefense.

Do your homework when itcomes to choosing a reputable com-pany and always get more than oneestimate. For a list of reputable com-panies in Brevard you can contact theSpace Coast Licensed RoofersAssociation at www.SCLRA.com.

In times of disaster, the Red Cross is there

Each year, the American Red Crossimmediately responds to about 70,000natural and man-made disasters in theUnited States, ranging from fires tohurricanes, floods, earthquakes, torna-does, hazardous materials spills, trans-portation accidents and explosions.

People count on the Red Cross tohelp them in their darkest hour. Inturn, the support of donors makes itpossible for the Red Cross to fulfill itshumanitarian mission. We are deeplygrateful for the generosity of individu-als, corporations and foundations whoinvest in the Red Cross.

To find out more about AmericanRed Cross disaster services programsat work, visit The Red Cross DisasterOnline Newsroom, Flickr, Twitter,Facebook, YouTube, Linkedin andSocial Vibe.

The Red Cross was chartered by theUnited States Congress to “carry on asystem of national and internationalrelief in time of peace and apply thesame in mitigating the sufferings

caused by pestilence, famine, fire, floods and other great national

calamities, and to devise and carry onmeasures for preventing the same.”The Charter is unique to the Red Crossbecause it assigns duties and obliga-tions to the nation, to disaster sur-vivors and to the people who gener-ously support its work throughdonations.

Red Cross disaster relief focuses onmeeting people’s immediate emer-gency needs caused by disaster.

When disaster threatens or strikes, the Red Cross provides shelter, food, health and emotional health service toaddress basic human needs and assistindividuals and families in resumingtheir normal daily activities independ-ently.

The Red Cross also feeds emergencyworkers, like fire fighters and police, handles inquiries from concernedfamily members outside the disasterarea, provides blood and blood prod-ucts to disaster victims and helpsthem access other available resources.

Learn the types of disasters oremergencies that may likely occur inyour area. These events can rangefrom those affecting only you andyour family, like a home fire or med-ical emergency, to those affectingyour entire community, like an earth-quake, flood or hurricane.

Identify how local authorities willnotify you during a disaster and howyou will get information, whetherthrough local radio, TV or NOAAWeather Radio stations or channels.

Know the difference between dif-ferent weather alerts, such as watch-es and warnings, and what actions totake in each.

Know what actions to take to pro-tect yourself during disasters thatmay occur in areas where you travelor have moved recently.

where hurricanes could happen andyou are not familiar with them, makesure you know what to do to protectyourself should one occur.

When a major disaster occurs, yourcommunity can change in an instant.Loved ones may be hurt and emer-gency response is likely to bedelayed.

Make sure that at least one mem-ber of your household is trained infirst aid and CPR and knows how touse an automated external defibrilla-tor. This training is useful in manyemergency situations.

Share what you have learned withyour family, household and neigh-bors and encourage them to beinformed.

Print emergency contact cards forall household members.

Write the contact information foreach household member, such aswork, school and cell phone num-

bers.Fold the card so it fits in your pock-

Preparing you and your pets in times of disasterThe best way to protect your household

from the effects of a disaster is to have adisaster plan. If you are a pet owner, thatplan must include your pets. Beingprepared can save their lives.

Different disasters require differentresponses. But whether the disaster is ahurricane or a hazardous spill, you mayhave to evacuate your home.

In the event of a disaster, if you mustevacuate, the most important thing youcan do to protect your pets is to evacuatethem, too.

If it’s not safe for you to stay behind, then it’s not safe to leave pets behindeither. Take action now, so you know howto best care for your furry friends whenthe unexpected occurs.

Local and state health and safetyregulations do not permit the Red Crossto allow pets in disaster shelters. (Serviceanimals are allowed in Red Cross shel-ters.) Know a safe place to take your pets.

Contact hotels and motels outside yourlocal area to check their policies onaccepting pets and restrictions on

number, size and species. Ask if “no pet”policies can be waived in an emergency.

Keep a list of “pet-friendly” places, including phone numbers, with yourdisaster supplies.

Ask friends, relatives or others outsidethe affected area whether they couldshelter your animals.

Make a list of boarding facilities andveterinarians who could shelter animalsin an emergency; include 24-hour phonenumbers.

Ask local animal shelters if they provideemergency shelter or foster care for petsduring a disaster.

Assemble a Pet Emergency Prepared-ness Kit Keep your pet’s essential suppliesin sturdy containers that can be easilyaccessed and carried (a duffle bag orcovered trash containers, for example).Your pet emergency preparedness kitshould include:

• Medications andmedical records (stored ina waterproof container)and a first aid kit.• Sturdy leashes, harnesses and/or carriersto transport pets safelyand ensure that youranimals can’t escape.• Current photos of your pets in case they get lost.• Food, drinkable water, bowls, cat litter/pan and manual can opener.• Information on feedingschedules, medicalconditions, behavior problems and the nameand number of yourveterinarian, in case youhave to foster or boardyour pets.• Pet bed or toys if easily transportable. The ASPCA recommends using a rescue

sticker alert to let people know that petsare inside your home. Make sure it isvisible to rescue workers, and that itincludes the types and number of pets inyour household and your veterinarian’sphone number.

If you must evacuate with your pets(and if time allows) write “EVACUATED”across the stickers so rescue workersdon’t waste time looking for them.

The behavior of pets may changedramatically after a disaster, becomingaggressive or defensive, so be aware oftheir well-being and protect them fromhazards to ensure the safety of otherpeople and animals.

Watch your animals closely and keepthem under your direct control, as fencesand gates may have been damaged.

Pets may become disoriented, particu-larly if the disaster has affected scentmarkers that normally allow them to findtheir home.

Be aware of hazards at nose and paw or

In an effort to help you and yourfamily prepare now, here are someone-minute drills that are short ontime, but big on impact.

Drill 1 – Get a KitVisit the American Red Cross Store,

and buy the Deluxe Emergency Pre-paredness Kit. That’s it. You arealready done with this step. Easy, right?

Drill 2 – Discuss Kit RulesOnce you get the kit, make sure that

everyone knows where it is and thatthe items are to be used for emergen-cies only. You don’t want someonetaking the water packet from the kitjust because they don’t want to makethe trip to the kitchen.

Drill 3 – Personalize Your Kit

Have each family member pick theirfavorite canned foods and personalitems and add them to the kit.

Drill 4 – Make an Evacuation PlanThis is much easier and less time

consuming than it seems. Pull out amap and highlighter and determinetwo or three destinations and theroutes to get there.

Drill 5 – Be InformedIt is important to know what natural

disasters can affect your area andwhat to do in the event of one striking.Read through the appropriate Disas-ter and Emergency guides. Watch theweather and stay on top of the news ifa hurricane or other severe weather ispredicted to come your way. If localauthorities are telling you to evacuate, then EVACUATE! If you followed thedrills above, then you already have anevacuation plan.

Hurricanes can cause cata-strophic damage to our communi-ties. The Atlantic Hurricane Seasonlasts from June to November, withthe peak season from mid-Augustto late October. Hurricanes bringheavy rains that can cause exten-sive flood damage in coastal andinland areas.

It is critical that we all payattention to watches and warningsand heed the advice of localofficials.

If we lean forward in prepared-ness, follow the good guidance ofofficials and participate in com-munity recovery, we will all play acritical part in being more resilientduring Hurricane Season.
