Our graduate program in higher education and student affairs is one of the oldest in the United States. We started offering courses more than 50 years ago. For many years we have been considered one of the leading graduate programs in the country. We are consistently ranked among the top ten

graduate programs by U.S News and World Report. Perhaps more so than any other graduate program in the country our faculty possess a unique blend of strong scholarly records and extensive experience in senior administrative roles. As a result they bring a rich understanding of leading research in their areas of expertise along with the ability to translate their ideas into the practical world of public and institutional policymaking. Collectively our faculty resources include expertise in the areas of: assessment and evaluation, comparative education, economics and finance, enrollment management, institutional research, policy studies, student affairs, student development, student engagement, and teaching and learning.

RESEARCH

The IU Higher Education and Student Affairs faculty are heavily involved in funded research projects that touch on many of the pressing public policy issues facing postsecondary education in the United States as well as other countries. In the past five years, faculty have received funding

from Lumina Foundation for Education, The Spencer Foundation, The College Board, The Teagle Foundation, the U.S. Department of Education, the National Endowment for the Arts, and the Surdna Foundation. In addition, several national and international projects related to student engagement, student success, and the college student experience are based at Indiana University, including the National Survey of Student Engagement, the Beginning College Student Survey of Student Engagement, the Faculty Survey of Student Engagement, the Law Student Survey of Student Engagement, and the Strategic National Arts Alumni Project. Collectively these projects have generated in excess of 24 million dollars in grants, contracts, and other income that provide many opportunities for students to work directly with faculty members and peers on intellectually stimulating activities and, equally important, underwrite much of the cost of attending graduate school. In addition, students often use data from many of these projects for dissertations and presentations at professional meetings that may eventually be published in journals and elsewhere.

IU CENTER FORPOSTSECONDARY RESEARCHPROMOTING INSTITUTIONAL EFFECTIVENESS

The Indiana University Center for Postsecondary Research (CPR) promotes student success and institutional effectiveness through research and service to postsecondary institutions and related agencies. The Center conducts research that informs institutional improvement and decision making,

student success initiatives, institutional assessment, student learning, and policies and practices that promote student success.

The Center houses several projects that are nationally recognized. The largest is the National Survey of Student Engagement (NSSE) and its affiliate surveys (Faculty Survey of Student Engagement, Law School Survey of Student Engagement, Beginning College Survey of Student Engagement).

The NSSE Institute for Effective Educational Practice was created to respond to increasing demand for using student engagement data and other relevant

information to inform policy and practice.

Project on Academic Success (PAS) focuses on practice and policy oriented research around opportunity and equity in postsecondary education. Several of the projects consider the multiple pathways of 21st century students toward postsecondary academic success and employment. Recently funded

studies include surveys of institutional practices focused on student success and mobile working students in urban areas. Current projects are funded through the The College Board, Lumina Foundation, and The Spencer Foundation.

Strategic National Arts Alumni Project (SNAAP), an annual online survey, data management, and institutional improvement system designed to enhance the impact of arts-school education. SNAAP partners with degree-granting institutions to administer the survey to their arts graduates. SNAAP is in collaboration with the Vanderbilt University Curb Center for Art, Enterprise, and Public Policy. Funding is provided by the Surdna Foundation, with support from the National Endowment for the Arts, Houston Endowment, and others. Established in 2008, the National Institute for Learning Outcomes Assessment (NILOA) assists institutions and others in discovering and adopting promising practices in the assessment of college student learning outcomes. collaboration with the University of Illinois. Documenting what students learn, know, and can do is of growing interest to colleges and universities, accrediting groups, higher education associations, foundations and others beyond campus, including students, their families, employers, and policy makers.

Doctoral Programs (Ph.D. & Ed.D)The Higher Education and Student Affairs Program (HESA) at Indiana University offers both Ed.D. and Ph.D. degree programs. Students interested in the HESA program at IU apply online through the School of Education at Indiana University. Each degree program has been designed with two separate student audiences in mind. The Ed.D. degree is a 60 credit hour post-masters degree program designed for doctoral students who are planning careers as senior-level college or university administrators. The Ph.D. degree is a 90 credit hour program designed for doctoral students who are planning careers as institutional researchers, policy analysts, and as faculty members in higher education programs. Master of Science (M.S.)The program at IU is consistently ranked as one of the best programs in the nation. Our program provides students with an experience that combines cutting edge research in the classroom with a hands-on experience in their graduate assistantship. In the last five years, placement of our graduates has been close to 100 percent, with almost all entering positions in student affairs. Many alumni, now in prominent positions in the field, are eager to hire IU graduates. The Indiana University Higher Education and Student Affairs (HESA) master’s program is designed for students to acquire the knowledge, skills, competencies, and philosophy required for exemplary professional practice in 21st century postsecondary educational institutions and other settings. Graduates of the HESA master’s program at IU will demonstrate a capacity for integrative learning and application that makes possible creative solutions to persistent and unanticipated problems that affect student and institutional performance.

Online CertificateThis certificate is designed for full time employees currently working in student affairs, without a student affairs degree, who are interested in learning more about the field, application of theory to practice, and the current issues and trends facing our profession. The curriculum consists of 12 credit hours, or four 3-hour courses. Three courses (9 credit hours) will serve as the core of the certificate program. Students will then select one of four course options for the final 3 credit hours. All courses are taught online. Students will be encouraged to engage in online video and written text communication.

For more information about how to apply to these programs, please visit the Indiana University Higher Education and Student Affairs web site at www.indiana.edu/~hesa/.

Students have the ability to take advantage of a

graduate program that is simultaneously located on

the Bloomington campus, the original residential

public flagship campus of Indiana University, and

at IUPUI, the vibrant urban research campus of

Indiana University. Students can gain a wide variety

of practical experiences on these two campuses.

The faculty are located on both campuses and teach

classes often using technology-enabled methods to

deliver courses simultaneously at both locations.
