Join B and work in rib for 2 rows. Work A in rib for 3 rows. (8 rows). Change to larger needles and A, continue in St st until piece measures 15 (16, 17)" from beg. On WS, bind off 15 (16, 17) sts for shoulder, work across 20 (22, 24) sts and place on holder. Bind off remaining 15 (16, 17) sts for shoulder. BO remaining 15 (16, 17) sts for each shoulder. Sleeves: With smaller needles and A, CO 28 (30, 32) sts. Work in K1, P1 rib for 3 rows. Join B and work in rib for 2 rows. Work A in rib for 3 rows. (8 rows). Change to larger needles and join A, continue in St st and increase 3 sts evenly across row #1, 31 (33, 35) sts. AT SAME TIME: Increase 1 st at each side every 6th row until 43 (47, 51) sts are reached. Work even until piece measures 12 (13, 14)" from beg. BO on WS. Finishing: Sew left shoulder seam. Neckband: With RS facing, with smaller needles and A, pick up and K 60(62, 64) sts evenly around neck. Work in k1, P1 rib for 3 rows. Join B and work in rib for 2 rows. Work A in rib for 3 rows. BO in rib. Sew 2nd shoulder and neckband seam. Mark 5¾ (6¼, 6½)” down from shoulder at each armhole edge. Sew top of sleeve at armhole edge between markers. Sew remaining side and sleeve seams. Hippo Pocket: With larger needles and D, CO 8 sts. On RS, increase 2 sts at each side. Purl 1 row.

Increase 1 st each end every RS row 4x. (20 sts) On RS , work even until piece measures 2½” from bottom, end RS. On WS, work 2 rows Seed st . BO on WS in Seed st pattern. With embroidery needle and strand of D, form a Chain st around pocket edge, leaving top open. Teeth (Make 2): With DPN’s knitting needles and C, CO 4 sts. Work 5 rows. (1” approx.) Cut strand and thread through remaining sts. Attach as indicated on photo of pocket, approximately 1½” from each side and bottom of Seed st border. Tack teeth at top and bottom.

Ears (Make 2): With larger needles and D, CO 3 sts. On RS, increase one st at each end (5 sts) Work 4 rows from beg. On RS (5th row), decrease one st at each end. Cut strand and thread through remaining sts, pull tightly and tack. With embroidery needle and strand of D, form a Chain st around each ear, with bottom free, leaving strand to attach ear. Attach as indicated on chart and photo. NOTE: Each ear curls inward - WS facing out, and sides pinched inward (as photo) Eyes (Make 2): With embroidery needle and dark grey thread, attach button as indicated on chart.

Nostrils (Make 2): With embroidery needle and strand of B, form French knot as indicated on chart. Buttons (2): With embroidery needle and white thread, attach 2 buttons on striped shirt (x - formation) as indicated on photo.
