Travel back to the 19th century when women and children were working in mines. What were working conditions like? What jobs did children do? What event happened to change the lives of these people? Meet Sam or Sally Fletcher and take part in role play activities to find out.
Aunty Brenda s Pit Village Past KS1 KS2

What was it like growing up in a coal mining village? Pupils meet Aunty Brenda in the backyard of her terraced house in 1972. Pupils look at artwork, handle objects and listen to Aunty Brenda’s stories of growing up in a mining community
Dig Deeper KS2

AVAILABLE: Tuesdays and ThursdaysCOST: £25 per workshop
(17 pupils per session) DURATION: 30 minutes
Everything you wanted to know about mining but were afraid to ask. Dig Deeper with one of our miners and work together to take apart an interactive model of Caphouse Colliery. Pupils will handle objects and ask questions to find out how mining has changed over the last 100 years.

Hands On Underground Tour (9.30-14.30)
Pupils spend the day as Victorian child miners during this cross-curricular, immersive experience. Activities include role play, creative writing, singing and a STEM challenge.

Hands On Underground Tour (9.30-14.30)
Pupils will arrive for their first day at work as a miner. They will find out about the daily routines and jobs that a miner did as well as how he stayed safe underground. Pupils will certainly get their hands dirty during this interactive, immersive day.
Science Explorer Trails Our self-led Science Explorer Trails cost £10 and are available everyday but must be booked in advance. Pupils follow a trail around site focusing on a Science topic. Choose from: Rocks, Materials or Habitats.

Rocks and Fossils KS2

What is coal? How was it formed? What do fossils look like? Make rocks memorable with this hands-on workshop in which pupils investigate rocks and create their own ‘fossil’ to take back to the classroom.
Science Show KS2

AVAILABLE : Monday-Friday (March-November only)
COST: £50 per workshop (17 pupils per session)
DURATION: 45 minutes
Our explosive Science Show explores the invention of the flame-safety lamp. Pupils will travel back in time to meet the scientific pioneers, Humphry Davy and George Stephenson and find out how their inventions helped to save lives and changed mining forever.
Fire and Forces Science Challenge KS2
NC LINKS: Science (forces, mechanisms, working scientifically)
AVAILABLE: Wednesdays and Fridays COST: £50 per workshop
(17 pupils per session) DURATION: 1 hour 30 minutes
Pupils experience the power of coal at the blacksmith’s forge and watch a demonstration of working machinery. Then, working as a mining team they complete a Science Challenge. A fun and practical workshop, which shows Science in action
Discover and Explore Arts
The Museum has an exciting range of outreach workshops to bring to your classroom, including science investigations, living-history sessions and object-handling workshops.

We think our Museum is a fantastic place to develop your pupils’ creative talents and is a perfect starting point for an Arts Award project.To help you we have created a Pupil Log Book and Teacher Resource, which leads pupils on a creative journey around the Museum where they complete a variety of arts activities, including drawing, creative writing and role play. There are also suggested activities and ideas to use back in the classroom too, which once completed, will provide the evidence required for your pupils to achieve Arts Award Discover.

Loans boxes
Take a piece of the Museum back to school with you and borrow a loans box free of charge. Our loans boxes contain objects, images and documents, which cover a variety of themes, and they can be borrowed for up to a month at a time. The Museum Siteand Teacher-led Activities
The Museum is set on a large site across two former coal mines: Caphouse Colliery and Hope Pit.
As well as the Underground Tour, there are so many things to see and do, which will keep your pupils focused, excite their curiosity and fuel learning across the curriculum.
Authentic pit buildings
and galleries
Our historic Caphouse site dates back to the late 1790s. See the steam winding engine installed in 1876 or visit the evocative pithead baths where a miner’s shift started. Drop in to the stables at 11.30 or 13.30 and listen to the Horsekeepers talk about how ponies were used underground.
1842 Gallery Explore the working conditions and lives of the women and children who worked underground in the early 19th century.
Mining Lives Gallery Explore interactive displays to find out about home and community, sports and leisure, Unions, disasters and strikes.
Coal Interface Gallery See some of our big machines and find out how inven-tions through time have made miners’ working lives safer.
Hope PitExplore STEM concepts with a visit to Hope Pit, a smaller colliery dating back to the 1830s.
Nature Trail and reed beds Follow the Nature Trail and find out how the Museum cleans the orange iron-rich minewater pumped from underground.
NEW Adventure Playground Run off a little steam after a busy day of learning.

This is the exciting highlight of any school visit and is a truly unforgettable experience. With an ex-coal miner as their personal guide, pupils ride the cage 140 metres underground to discover first-hand what life was like as a miner.
Choose from:
Meet a Miner TourPupils go on a chronological journey through mining history from the 1840s, when whole families, including young children, worked together underground, right through mechanisation and up to the present day. A great tour to show how mining has changed over time.
Hands on TourThis underground tour can be tailored to suit your group and is particularly good for SEN pupils. A tour can include the following interactive areas:
> Underground stables - muck out, harness and feed a model horse
> 19th century mining - get your hands dirty and work as a family to dig the coal
> Lighting area - find out about lighting through the ages and play some lighting games
> Geology - see a real coal face and handle rocks and fossils.

Getting to the MuseumThe Museum is on the A642, halfway between Wakefield and Huddersfield, easily accessible from M1 and M62.
