DART toDalkey fromDublin city
Heritage Trail 1 – via the sea
Begin at Dalkey Castle & Heritage Centre. Travel along Castle Street right up Railway Road, then left along Sorrento Road and left at Y junction towards Sorrento Terrace. Explore Sorrento Park, opposite Sorrento Terrace, with its panoramic sea views across Dublin and Killiney Bays. Visit Dillon’s Park at the top of Coliemore Road which has access to the sea for rock fishing but not swimming. Use the telescope at Coliemore Harbour – and see the well preserved 10th Century Church dedicated to St Begnet on Dalkey Island. Dalkey Sound was prominent in the Middle Ages when Dalkey acted as the port for Dublin. Coliemore Harbour was built in 1868.Today, it is used for leisure purposes and boats can be hired here from local fishermen. Continue along Coliemore Road and return to Dalkey via Sorrento Road. A 60-70 mins. Not strenuous. Buggy & wheelchair friendly.
Heritage Trail 2 – to Bulloch Harbour
Begin at Dalkey Castle & Heritage Centre. See the remains of St Begnet’s 8th century Church and Graveyard. It is dedicated to the local saint – Begnet. The graveyard was probably used as a burial ground from the 13th century. See Archbold’s Castle, one of the seven castles of Dalkey across from the Heritage Centre. At the north end of Castle Street, turn right along Ulverton Road and the next Castle on the right is called Bulloch. It had a thriving fish industry, run by Cistercian monks, in the 13th century. It is now a private Nursing Home. Turn right down Harbour Road towards the sea. Stop and enjoy Bulloch Harbour and see lobsters and crabs caught by local fishermen. This harbour was built in the early 19th century to facilitate the shipping of granite across Dublin Bay. Continue along Harbour Road and return to the town via Leslie Avenue or Convent Road.A 45-50 mins. Not strenuous. Buggy & wheelchair friendly.
Heritage Trail 3 with panoramic sea views
Begin at Coliemore Harbour. Take a detour into Sorrento Park and left onto Vico Road with its panoramic sea views. Watch out for dolphins in the bay! Access the sea at the Ramparts. Alternatively, visit White Rock from the Vico Road and see the safe, sandy beach. Back on the Vico Road, look out for the ‘Cat’s Ladder’ steps in the trees on the right and climb all 237 steps. At the top, turn left onto Green Road. Follow signs to the Obelisk at the summit. Dalkey and Killiney Hill Parks have lots of tracks for rambling and great areas for rock climbing and paragliding. Follow the path beyond the Obelisk to the right, down through the woods to a car park. From the car park, take the main avenue, past the children’s play-ground, and then turn right down Dalkey Avenue and back to the town. A 2-2.5 hours. Reasonably strenuous. Not suitable for buggies or wheelchairs.
