The Heritage Basketball Academy will be further devel-

oped in the next academic year thanks to the availability

of the new state-of-the-art Multifunction Hall for all

sessions of the Academy. The School is also facilitating

even more opportunities for the Basketball Academy

players by entering our team into different competitions

next year. During the last season more than 65 children

participated, and through training and games all im-

proved their performance. The Secondary School Two-Day Hike took place in May

2014 with 130 hikers from Year 7 to Year 10. Students

also had the chance to take part in a variety of activities

including swimming, football and cricket. We all had a

great time, confirming the strong bonds that students and

staff members develop during these kind of events.

More than 80 students were involved this year in the

Duke of Edinburgh’s International Award. In March, 29

participants at the Gold Level travelled to Greece in or-

der to fulfil the criteria of their Residential Project,

which they did with great success. On the trip, students

enjoyed the opportunity to develop their skills in outdoor

activities such as hiking, mountain biking, rafting and

abseiling.

A number of friendly games in a variety of sports in-

cluding football, basketball, volleyball, cricket and tag

rugby have taken place throughout the year against other

schools, with great performances by our students.

The Heritage Football Academy will also expand next

year by offering more sessions to different ages and abil-

ities. The aim is to enter our school into the national

championship that takes place between private football

academies, so that the students will have the chance to

gain even more experience and skills.

I would like to thank all students who took part in any

physical activity organised by the PE Department. Many

thanks also to all staff involved.

MUSIC DEPARTMENT

Primary School Concert:

For the second year running, the Music Department has organised a Primary School Concert with musical per-

formances by children from Reception to Year 6. Organised by Mr Hovig, the concert took place on Friday 2

May 2014 at our school’s Amphitheatre. The concert was a great success and students did extremely well. Musi-

cal performances varied in style from Classical, Jazz, Stage Musicals, Pop, Club Dance as well as World Music.

Students demonstrated their skills in singing, piano, guitar, violin, clarinet, Chinese zither and even ‘air’ trum-

pet. Well done to all participants!

Musical Performance at PASYKAF May Fete:

Students from the Primary School performed for guests and visitors of the PASYKAF Fete on Sunday 11 May

2014 at Kanika Elias Beach Hotel. PASYKAF is a voluntary, non-profit, charitable organisation founded in

1986, which offers cancer prevention programmes, professional health services and palliative care. More infor-

mation about the charity can be found on their website: http://www.pasykaf.org/. A selection of songs was per-

formed from the recent Primary School Concert in aid to the charity organisation.

School Orchestra and Project ‘Mission Orchestra’: The School Orchestra this year has grown and developed. With ‘Mission Orchestra’ in place more students from

both Primary and Secondary School have taken up orchestral instruments and taken part in the School Orchestra,

performing live in a group for school functions. A big ‘WELL DONE’ to all of our musicians for their hard

work and dedication to the School Orchestra.

There is still availability for free instrument loans from the School as part of the ‘Mission Orchestra’ project, so

if any students in Years 5 - 10 are interested in taking up saxophone, trumpet, flute, clarinet, violin or cello les-

sons please contact the Music Department at [email protected].

Maria Sidorova’s Piano Recital:

We were very proud of our Year 12 A Level Music student Maria Sidorova for her initiative and hard work in

preparing and performing her very own Piano Recital on Thursday 12 June 2014 at Theatro Ena. The perfor-

mance included extremely difficult pieces from Bach, Beethoven, Chopin, Liszt and Schumann, all performed

outstandingly and professionally. The theatre was full and her music performance left all in awe. Congratula-

tions, Maria, on your remarkable talents and your great success.

Lisa Xianzi Zhang’s Piano Performance at Kangourou Prize Giving:

We are very proud of our Year 11 student Lisa Xianzi Zhang for her piano performance at the Kangourou Prize

Giving Ceremony on Friday 30 May 2014 at our school’s Amphitheatre. She performed the incredibly difficult

piece Scherzo No.2 by Frederic Chopin for the guests and award winners of the Kangourou Ceremony. Well

done!

Music Institute:

May we remind you that the School’s Music Department also encompasses a Music Institute, offering private

lessons in singing, piano, electric, and bass guitar, acoustic and classical guitar, clarinet, flute, saxophone, trum-

pet, violin and cello. In addition we run a Rock Band, a Junior Choir, a School Orchestra and will soon start an

Early Years Music Club, Secondary School Choir, String Club, and a Guitar Club. For more information and for

signing up early, please contact us at [email protected].

What a memorable day Year 2 had at the

beach. As part of our topic, Oceans and

Working on the sixth project, Education: Past & Present of Comenius programme Daily Life Through Students’

Eyes, the children of Comenius Club interviewed Dr Kouris, asking him questions about his education in his

small town ‘Morfou’. On 4 May 2014 students also visited the Old School Museum in Vasa where they had a

tour. During the Comenius trip, the children performed a short play where the children acted as 'old time' stu-

dents. The role-play was video-recorded and will be uploaded on the website of Comenius programme.

On 28 May our school hosted 20 teachers from Romania, Italy, Spain, Portu-

gal, England and Turkey, with whom our school has participated in a Comeni-

us Project. Throughout the past two years we have had the chance to visit

their countries and schools, and now was their turn to come and visit us. We

welcomed them into our Early Years and Primary Schools with songs in their

languages performed by Year 2, Greek dances performed by the Reception

children, and even a role play from Year 1 students. The visitors also had the

chance to tour the school, visit the classrooms and interact with our students.

After school they experienced some of our culture by visiting museums and

Omodos, where they enjoyed seeing Cypriot handicrafts, and of course dishes

from the Cypriot meze! The Comenius Project and the visit to Cyprus culmi-

nated in a final closing ceremony on Saturday 31 May that marked the end of

this two year project. It was a magnificent event that included different acts,

such presentations from the Comenius club children and Greek dances by the

Greek Folklore Association. Everyone joined in the dancing, including par-

ents, teachers, children and partners, bringing the week to a fitting and memo-

rable end.

LEARNING IS FUN IN NURSERY

On Thursday 12 June 2014 the children in Nursery had a Water Day as part of their topic of the Sea.

Mr Panikos and his son Andreas from Mundial Marine brought along two boats for the children to see

and climb aboard. He also showed the children various equipment, such as large fins and lifejackets for

them to try on. Their playground was then turned into a waterpark with water play activities and large

paddling pools. The children changed into their swimming costumes and had fun splashing around and

getting soaking wet. Just before home time the children were dried off and treated to ice creams. What

a perfect end to a fun-filled day!

ART IN THE SECONDARY SCHOOL The annual Art Exhibition was again a roaring success, with more students than ever before showing their work in Fine Art and Photography. Approximately two hundred people attended the opening evening. Here is some of the work, much of which will remain hanging during the summer throughout the Secondary School building, if you have not yet had time to visit school to see it. On Sunday 18 May 2014 the AIDT Hip Hop Chal-

receiving 96%. The Junior Two overall Cyprus winner

was Nicole Papageorgiou from The Heritage Private

School and Free Flight Dance Studio.

We would like to take this opportunity to say well

done to all members of PATH and Free Flight, which

consist of Heritage and non-Heritage students. As

guests at their recent prize giving, the standard was ex-

cellent and it was a pleasure to see just how much the

children have developed in confidence and expertise in

a short time. It was obvious that a great deal of com-

mitment has gone into their work.
