The three events together form a multifaceted San Marcos showcase. Your support and willingness to help out is always appreciated and greatly needed as we get ready for several activities in April and in the months to come. As you may know, our Structure, Function and Bylaws Chair, Ralph T. Davis, passed away in February. I appreciate Gloria Fortin for stepping in to that position on the Board. We also will miss the service of Dorothy Evans, our President-Elect, who resigned from the Board in March due to health reasons. Please contact me if you want to recommend someone or would like to volunteer your services to fill that very important Board position. Please try to attend the P & Z meeting April 12th at City Hall as your support is needed to let the committee know that the Lamar School property, next to the Historical District, should not be re-zoned to allow developers to construct a multi-story complex that would include apartments, a hotel, retail and restaurant space and a parking garage. Finally, please purchase tickets for the Tour of Homes April 30-May 1. If you cannot attend, perhaps you can give the tickets to a friend! The Tour committee is also looking for docents, so please contact Marianne Moore to sign up. Proclamation declares April 21 as Edward Burleson Day

Heritage members will join other local groups April 5 at City Hall for the reading of a proclamation declaring April 21, the 180th anniversary of the Battle of San Jacinto, as General Edward Burleson Day. A new plaque was installed at City Hall next to the bust of Gen. Burleson, which previously had no identifying information about the local hero of early Texas history. On San Jacinto Day, Texas flags will surround the square and the Sons of the Republic of Texas will raise the flags at City Hall.

Planning and Zoning Meeting April 12

On the agenda for the Planning and Zoning Commission Meeting Tuesday, April 12 (6 p.m. at City Hall) is a motion to change the zoning designation of the old Lamar School area, located at the corner of Hutchison and Moore streets. The zoning change to “mixed use” would pave the way for a proposed Lindsey Hill Development project, slated to include a 5-story apartment and hotel complex with hundreds of units, along with retail businesses and a 400-car parking garage. Those concerned about the impact of this development on the historic district are encouraged to attend the meeting. More information is available at www.smhistorymatters.com.
