Soak Up Some Vitamin D this Summer

Sunlight is the most important source of vitamin D for most people – and August in Wisconsin means plenty of sun and, therefore, plenty of this mood-boosting vitamin. We actually require more vitamin D as we age and those over 50 are at an increased risk of vitamin D deficiency. This holds especially true for women. The most well-known benefit of vitamin D is its ability to maintain strong bone through its regulation of calcium. But it

also helps reduce the risk of flu and diabetes, while also regulating mood and helping fight off depression. We can get some vitamin D through foods – like salmon, tuna, cheese and egg yolks – as well as vitamin D-fortified foods like milk, cereal and juice. But the most important source is still sunlight. So take it as an excuse to get outdoors this month and embrace the nice weather (while it lasts!). Take a walk outdoors, sip some lemonade

on the patio or take your card game outside. (Remember to wear proper clothing and sunscreen and to stay hydrated!)

August is prime growing season for much of America, which means there are some great fruits and vegetables hitting market shelves and family tables this month. Blueberries, raspberries, melons and stone fruits like peaches and nectarines are particularly good this month. For vegetables, beans, cabbage, peppers, tomatoes and squash are all in season.

It’s Prime Time for Seasonal Produce

In-season produce not only tastes better, but it also retains more nutrients because the produce is allowed to ripen before being picked. It’s also cheaper, meaning you save money while eating better! Buying local – through farmers markets and produce stalls – is a great way to ensure that you’re getting the freshest in-season produce, while also supporting local farmers and businesses. Many also offer organic and sustainable

options. So take the opportunity to grab some tasty (and healthy) ingredients for your summer meals!

Trissa Reinhardt Director of Nursing

This month, we are excited to introduce our new director of nursing, Trissa Reinhardt. Trissa grew up in Eau Claire and graduated from Altoona High School in 2014. She then attended CVTC and is currently finishing her BSN at the University of Phoenix online. She has previously worked at Dove Healthcare and St.

Croix Hospice as a registered nurse. Her work with St. Croix Hospice in our building means that she is already familiar with most of our residents. We are excited to have Trissa join our team here at Heritage. We know that her enthusiasm and dedication to resident care will make a great addition to our care team.

Pontoon Outing

On July 13 a group of residents from both Heritage Court and Heritage Assisted Living went for a pontoon ride with the Christian Outdoorsman volunteer group. After the boat ride we enjoyed a lunch consisting of burgers, brats, hot dogs, potato salad, baked beans, and plenty of sweets.

Music in the ‘Courtyard’

On July 19 we welcomed local musician JT Nolan, who dropped by to play some classic tunes for us. It was much too hot to have our music outside (107 degrees with the heat index), but we still made the best of the extremely warm day with drinks and popsicles.

Clockwise from top left: Residents enjoy virgin old fashioneds during “happy hour” before the music. Everyone gathers around to listen to JT play the classics. Marion and June pose with their old fashioneds. JT plays a variety of instruments for us, including trumpet, saxophone, flute, and harmonica.
