Welcome

WELCOME SPECKLE PARK BREEDERS AND SOON TO BE SPECKLE PARK BREEDERS, This ALL Canadian breed has gained attention across the globe and is something Canadian beef breeders can be very proud of. Whether in the cold of Western Canada or the heat of Australia, this tough easy-keeping breed can adapt and flourish. We would like to thank our fellow Speckle Park breeders in Western Canada who developed this great breed and have been a great resource and genetic supplier to us here in Ontario. We would like to welcome 2 special guest consignors from Saskatchewan, where the Speckle Park breed originated – River Hill Farm and Spot-R-None Ranch.

This, the second edition of the biannual Herd Builder - Ontario Speckle Park Sale, is an offer of some of the best bull stock that Ontario has to offer. Starting in 2015, each year we will host a Herd Builder – Bull Sale in April and a Herd Builder - Female Sale in October. The goal of each sale is in the name “Herd Builder”, and has been established for existing Speckle Park breeders to share their genetics with new breeders, so we can collectively establish a sustainable and profitable Speckle Park market here in Ontario. Ontario currently has 12-15 active Speckle Park breeders and our group of consignors feel there is room for 75-100 breeders in the province. Demand for the breed quickly consumes supply both across Canada and now in several countries across the globe (i.e. Australia, USA, New Zealand, Ireland and UK).

In this Herd Builder – Bull Sale, expect to see honest and durable bulls selected from the top genetics of these herds. Powerful long-yearlings and 2-year olds on offer – commercial and registered bulls. Also selling, a solid group of BIO tested yearling bulls on offer and even a group of 8 commercial bred heifers to start your Speckle Park herd.

While this breed is predominantly known for their high quality carcass traits, our group of Ontario consignors have also noted:• calving ease • highly reproductive bulls and females• efficient feed conversion • good hard feet• excellent udder structure through many lactations• excellent mothering traits

As consignors, we sincerely appreciate your interest in Speckle Park cattle and this second annual sale. All consignors will be present in the barn prior to the sale, so please come out early and visit with them about their bulls and breeding programs. If you can’t attend, the sale will be broadcast online at www.davidcarson.on.ca. Thanks to David Carson personally and his helpful staff, who help to make every sale professional and personable.

SALE TIME - SATURDAY, APRIL THE 25TH 12:30PM,

WITH CATTLE VIEWING OPENING AT 10AM. COME EARLY AND ENJOY COMPLIMENTARY TIM’S COFFEE AND DONUTS,

COURTESY OF THE CONSIGNOR GROUP.

A word from CSPA Business Manager & Director

3

The Herd Builder Speckle Park sale last October 2014, the first in Ontario, impressed me immensely. As the breed Association’s business manager, as a director and a breeder with my own herd since 1999, I cannot say enough about what I saw and people I met. Speckle Park in Ontario have indeed taken flight in the best possible sense. The cattle, purebred and commercial, are as good as anywhere in Canada. And so they should be! Speckle Park, the really good type, are in Ontario too and have been for some time. Now it is extremely gratifying for me to see them making such fantastic progress. I was particularly delighted to see mature cows of a type I covet and every one wishes they had more. I saw lots of my ideal – moderate frame, feminine heads and fronts moving smoothly into wide bodies, with level top lines, great width across the pelvis, great length from hooks to pins with abundant flesh down to the hocks. These are great cattle! We need lots and lots of these. Ontario breeders have the genetics to produce the right type. Hold onto the type.

And the people, the consignors and the breeders, are a fantastic lot in Ontario. I certainly enjoyed the hospitality and the enthusiasm for the Speckle Park. You have a great group with knowledge and experience with livestock, and a willingness to invest in the genetics to move Speckle Park forward. The interest in performance tested bulls is fantastic for the breed.

The Canadian Speckle Park Association, its directors and I, as business manager, wish to support Speckle Park breeders in Ontario in their work to develop Speckle Park in as many ways as we can. Please talk to us. The potential for growth in your Ontario market is outstanding. And you are sitting on the edge of a relatively undeveloped market in Eastern Canada. The demand is there and waiting for you to fill it.

We all wish you all the greatest success in your Herd Builder bull sale this spring!

Rod Remin

The yearling bull consignors invested in performance testing their bulls through Beef Improvement Ontario (BIO) to ensure they offer sound bulls that will function and perform in any herd. The BIO bull test is run by John Post of Alma, ON who has a history of growing quality

bulls responsibly. John monitors ADG, to ensure group average does not exceed approx. 4.5 lbs/day. This is especially important with the Speckle Park breed that is so efficient at feed conversion. Bulls are grown on a balanced diet of free choice first cut hay, cracked corn and

mineral. That’s it! Bulls are measure for Average Dairy Gain (ADG), Weight Per Day of Age (WPDA), semen tested, scrotal measured, ultra-sounded, frame scored and more. Buy with confidence – full data and weights available sale day!
