Immune Health

What is the Immune

System?

• One of the ways our body uses its

immune system is as a defense

mechanism to fight disease,

bacteria, viruses and foreign matter

• Our bodies have a vast network of

cells and tissues on the lookout for

‘foreign invaders’

• As soon as these ‘invaders’ are

detected the immune system is

activated

There are 2 types of

Immune Responses:

Adaptive Immunity

Takes more time to develop, but

it is more precise and therefore

effective towards an attacking

pathogen (foreign invaders)

Innate Immunity

This is fast and reacts

quickly to eliminate

bacteria, viruses and any

foreign material

Physical• Skin

• Sneezing

• Coughing

Chemical• Mucus

• Stomach Acid

• Enzymes

Cellular• Phagocytes

Both malnutrition and overnutrition has been shown to impair immune functions

PROTEIN

• Protein is an essential

component of every cell in the

body including immune cells1

• Post-exercise protein has been

shown to have beneficial

effects for the immune system

in athletes2

• Aim to consume up to 30% of

your daily calories from

protein

1 Protein contributes to a growth in muscle mass and contributes to the maintenance of normal bones2 Gleeson M. Immunological aspects of sport nutrition. Immunol Cell Biol. 2016;94(2):117–123. doi:10.1038/icb.2015.109

• Healthy fats play a key role in our

bodies1

• They are needed for normal functioning

of the immune system as well as vision,

brain, and heart2

• Some healthy fats are also considered

essential, therefore we have to

consume them through foods

HEALTHY FATS

1. DHA contributes to the maintenance of normal brain function and normal vision (the beneficial effect is obtained with a daily intake of 250 mg

of DHA). EPA and DHA contribute to the normal function of the heart (the beneficial effect is obtained with a daily intake of 250 mg of EPA and

DHA).

• Can help reduce oxidative stress & boost

immune system1-2

• This is why is important to have your 5 a day!

1 Olive oil polyphenols contribute to the protection of blood lipids from oxidative stress. The beneficial effect is obtained with a daily intake of 20 g of olive oil.It is applicable only for olive oil which

contains at least 5 mg of hydroxytyrosol and its derivatives (e.g. oleuropein complex and tyrosol) per 20 g of olive oil

EXERCISE

• Regular moderate-intensity

exercise helps to maintain a proper

immune function1

• Aim to exercise for at least 150

minutes a week at a moderate

intensity2

REST & SLEEP

• Sleep represents a key part of our

lives 1It influences our emotional

wellbeing, cognitive functions, daily

performance, as well as our physical

health

• There is emerging evidence that chronic

partial sleep loss might be more

detrimental to immune functions than

short-term total sleep loss2

• Sleep deprivation can lead to increased

risks of a compromised immune system3
