VISIT TO HENRY MOORE STUDIO AT PERRY GREEN HERTFORDSHIRE

    FRIDAY 28 SEPTEMBER 2012

As the first event of his year, the Master Elect has arranged a visit to the Studios of Henry

Moore. Early booking is recommended as places are limited.

Acclaimed as one of the greatest twentieth century sculptors, Henry Moore was born in

Castleford, Yorkshire, in 1898, son of a miner. Taught locally, he settled in London after the

First World War, and soon became known as one of the avante-garde. The human figure

became the catalyst for his exploration of form, and the first of his reclining figures was

carved in the late 1920s. After his studio in Hampstead suffered damage in the Second World

War, Moore moved to Perry Green in 1940. Moore was also a superb draughtsman, and his

sketches of Londoners sheltering from the blitz in the underground stations brought his art to

popularity. After the war, a series of family groups heralded a period of abstraction on a

grand scale, in which figures were broken into elemental pieces. Moore sculpture adorned

prestigious sites including the Lincoln Centre, New York and the UNESCO Building in Paris.

Major retrospective exhibitions were held in the Tate Gallery, London in 1968 and in Florence

in 1972. In 1977, the Henry Moore Foundation was established as a Charitable Trust,

responsible for the completion of limited editions of his monumental bronzes, and to

organise world-wide exhibitions of his work. The Foundation holds an unrivalled collection of

his work, much of which is displayed in the garden of the Perry Green studios, created by his

wife Irina. Active until a few months before his death in 1986, Moore took a delight in the

soft Hertfordshire landscapes, and the sheep grazing peacefully outside his windows.

Moores home Hoglands has recently been restored for visits and complements the more

public aspects of the studios and sculpture garden.

Our visit to the Foundation will begin at 10.30 am at the visitor centre near The Hoops.

After coffee we will be divided into small groups for tours of Hoglands. There will be a

group luncheon at The Hoops (now owned by the Foundation) before assembling for a

comprehensive tour of the grounds and studios, followed by tea before departure. This is

one of the outstanding cultural and artistic sites, which vividly evokes the personality of its

creator, long recognised as one of the epic figures of modernism.

The cost of the visit has been set at 35.00 per head to include entrance fees and lunch

There is ample parking space at the Visitor Centre. Perry Green can be reached by taxi from

Bishops Stortford on the Liverpool St. Cambridge line. Further details will be circulated
