Museum Exhibit and Extended Response

NOTIFICATION OF ASSESSMENT MODULE: Module A: Experience Through Language Elective 2: Distinctively Visual

WEIGHTING: 15%

NATURE OF THE TASK: Visual representation and extended response.

SYLLABUS OUTCOMES TO BE ASSESSED: A student: H2. demonstrates understanding of the relationships among texts. H4. describes and analyses the ways that language forms and features, and structures of texts shape meaning and influence responses. H6. engages with the details of text in order to respond critically and personally. H8. articulates and represents own ideas in critical, interpretive and imaginative texts from a range of perspectives. H10. analyses and synthesises information and ideas into sustained and logical argument for a range of purposes and audiences. H12. reflects on own processes of responding and composing.

MARKING CRITERIA: You will be assessed on how well you:

Demonstrate an understanding of how ‘distinctively visual’ is created in texts.

Demonstrate an understanding of how meaning is shaped through ‘distinctively visual’.

Organise, develop and express ideas using language appropriate to audience, purpose and form.

TASK DESCRIPTION: PART A: VISUAL REPRESENTATION

a. Students select one of Henry Lawson’s short stories from the collection set for study. b. Students identify and explore the ways in which the ‘distinctively visual’ images in

the story are created. c. Students create a visual representation of the ‘distinctively visual’ images we see in

their chosen story. Students can compose in the form of:

A collage

A film trailer using Windows Moviemaker

A Windows PowerPoint presentation

Sculpture

Drawing/painting

Any other suitable visual form

PART B: TEXT PANEL

a. Students write a 200 word text panel, explaining how their visual representation emphasises the ‘distinctively visual’ elements of the story.

PART C: MUSEUM EXHIBITION

a. Students’ work will be used to create a classroom exhibition. b. One English period will be used for viewing of the exhibits. c. Students are to take notes concerning how TWO exhibits (not their own) have

conveyed the ‘distinctively visual’ elements of the Henry Lawson stories. d. The two exhibits are to represent different short stories – e.g. The Loaded Dog and

The Drover’s Wife.

PART D: EXTENDED RESPONSE

a. One English period will be allocated for students to complete an extended response. b. Students are required to choose TWO exhibits (not their own) and answer the

following question: ‘How have your chosen exhibits successfully conveyed the ‘distinctively visual’ images present in TWO Henry Lawson short stories?’ In your response, make detailed reference to the exhibits and the prescribed text.

FURTHER INSTRUCTIONS FOR THIS ASSESSMENT:

Students may use their handwritten notes from the exhibition during the in-class extended response.

Students are encouraged to make note of and evaluate the medium and techniques their fellow classmates have used to create their visual representations.

Students are given 50 minutes to write their extended response in class. At the end, the extended response and the handwritten notes from the exhibition are to be handed in.

The raw mark for this assessment is /30 – this will be reduced to a mark /15 (i.e. 15%).

Composes an insightful and creative visual representation of a Henry Lawson short story.

Demonstrates, with subtlety and flair, the ways in which the ‘distinctively visual’ images in the story are created.

Composes a creative visual representation of a Henry Lawson short story.

Satisfactorily demonstrates the ways in which the ‘distinctively visual’ images in the story are created.

5-7

Composes a basic or simplistic visual representation of a Henry Lawson short story.

Attempts to demonstrate the ways in which the ‘distinctively visual’ images in the story are created.

Composes an incomplete or unsatisfactory visual representation.
