    The year saw s ignific ant change and advancement with the expans ion o fthe char it y' s work from Cambridge to London, with the lat ter locat ionquickly becoming the main focus of activity.Major achievements have included:

    The launch of a weekly events p rog ramme in London wh ich hasincreased the charity's visibility dramatical ly and led to a notedincrease in at tendance and interest in our activities.The launch of a new website to cope with the increased researchoutput being produced and with the capac ity fo r future growth.The holding o f o ur first conference, on the internat iona l s lavetrade, w ith Cha tham House.The deve lopment o f a media presence through contributions tova rious p rin t and rad io /TV outlets.The charity has cont inued to deve lop and att ract new suppo rt e r s for i t swork at a pleasing rate and the t rus tees expect the scope of i t s activitiest o increase accordingly in 2008 as a consequence.

    B a s i s of preparation of the accounts

    The financial statements have been prepared in accordance with the Financial Reporting Standard forSmaller Entities (FRSSE), effective January 2007, and al l other applicable accounting standards, asmodified by the 2005 Revision of the Statement of Recommended Practice for Accounting andReporting issued by the Charity Commissioners for England & Wales, effective April 2005, adapted tomeet the needs of unincorporated organisations . The accounts have been drawn up in accordancewith the provisions of the Charities Acts , and include the results of the charity's operations which aredescribed in the Trustees' Report, all ofwhich are continuing.Insofar as the Statement of Recommended Practice for Accounting and Reporting issued by theCharity Commissioners for England & Wales, effective April 2005 requires compliance with specificFinancial Reporting Standards other than the FRSSE then the specific Financial Reporting Standardshave been followed where their requirements differ from those of the FRSSE.

    The charity h a s taken advantage o f the exemption in the F R S S E from the requirement to produce acash f low statement.The part icular accounting pol ic ies adopted are se t out be low.

    Recogni t i on o f l iabil i t iesLiabilities are recognised on the accruals basis in accordance with normal accounting principles,modified where necessary in accordance with the guidance given in the Statement of RecommendedPractice for Accounting and Reporting (effective April 2005) issued by the Charity Commissioners forEngland & Wales.

    TaxationAs a registered charity, the company is exempt from income and corporation ta x to the extent that itsincome and gains are applicable to charitable purposes only. Value Added Tax is not recoverable bythe company , and is therefore included in the relevant costs in the Statement of Financial Activities
