Hypothesis
• Water quality would decrease over the summer –temp. would raise, nitrate increase, oxygen decrease
• Measurements– PH– Temperature– Nitrates– Dissolved oxygen
![Page 6: Henry Hagg Lake Water Quality Report. Location The testing site- Boat dock A.](https://reader030.fdocuments.net/reader030/viewer/2022032703/56649d2c5503460f94a029e5/html5/thumbnails/6.jpg)
Temperature
• Temperature is very important to water quality– Temp Oxygen– It effects the rate of photosynthesis by plants and
the sensitivity of organisms to toxic wastes and disease
– The sun raises the temperature of water as well as thermal pollution from industry
![Page 7: Henry Hagg Lake Water Quality Report. Location The testing site- Boat dock A.](https://reader030.fdocuments.net/reader030/viewer/2022032703/56649d2c5503460f94a029e5/html5/thumbnails/7.jpg)
Dissolved Oxygen
• Dissolved oxygen is important to the health of aquatic ecosystems– A decrease can endanger species– High levels of bacteria from sewage or rotting
plants can cause % of saturation to decrease– A raise in water temperature can also decrease
saturation

Nitrate
• Nitrate is a nutrient needed by all aquatic plants and animals– Decomposition of dead plants and animals and
excretions of living animals contribute to nitrate levels
– Sewage is the main source of excess nitrate as well as agricultural runoff
– Excess levels of nitrate can increase plant growth and therefore decrease % oxygen saturation

pH
• pH can be affected by– Industrial waste– Agricultural runoff– Drainage from poorly operated mining operations– Many animals can be affected by even small
changes in pH levels
