Scholarship Statement: I invented and patented the Finn™ Knee in 1987, which became FDA approved in 1991. Over the subsequent years, the Finn™ Knee evolved into the Orthopedic Salvage System (OSS) featuring the Finn™ Knee. This system is utilized worldwide and has salvaged over 20,000 lower extremities in patients who may have faced amputation or a wheelchair bound existence. In 2000, the Millennium Edition of Orthopedics Today recognized the Finn™ Knee as one of the most significant advances in a century of orthopedics. More notably, in 2008 the American Academy of Orthopedic Surgeons recognized the Finn™ Knee as one of the most significant advances in orthopedic surgery in their 75 years of existence. I have also developed numerous orthopedic devices utilized to reconstruct the most challenging problems in the pelvis and lower extremity. For example, I developed the Balance Hip in 1994, which laid the groundwork for an immediate weight-bearing following uncemented total hip replacement. Prior to this, patients endured six weeks of non-weight bearing ambulation, significantly delaying their recovery. Related to my orthopedic inventions, in 2010, I was honored by being nominated and selected to receive the Wilkes University Health Science Distinguished Service Award. This distinction is awarded every five years to alumni as a lifetime achievement award for excellence and contribution to the field of health science. Exemplary Achievements:

See CV. Clinical Statement: I established and have directed the University of Chicago Bone and Joint Replacement Center at Weiss since 1996. This center serves as a tertiary referral resource and attracts patients from all over the United States and abroad. In addition to routine joint replacement, patients are treated on a regular basis for limb threatening lower extremity conditions resulting from cancer, infection, congenital deformities, neurologic conditions, and trauma. I consistently see outpatients two full days a week, as well as, perform surgical procedures two full days a week. I educate resident, fellows and visiting surgeons from the United States and abroad. No changes are expected. Institutional Citizenship: I began my practice at the University of Chicago in 1986, but have been in a full-time clinical position at Weiss Memorial Hospital since 1996. For practical reasons, my institutional citizenship takes place at Weiss Memorial Hospital. In addition to the University of Chicago Bone and Joint Replacement Center, I established and direct the Joint University, which is a highly specialized inpatient ward for joint replacement patients. Ninety-nine percent of patients who participate in the Joint University program report an excellent experience based on Press Ganey surveys. I have been Chief of the Section of Orthopedics at Weiss and since 2001 and the Chairman of the Department of Surgery since 2009. I participate in numerous executive and clinical committees at Weiss Memorial Hospital.
