Henri Rouseau

Henri Rousseau was born in Laval, a Loire valley town in northern France, on May 21,

1844. His father was a small manufacturer of oil lamps and tinsmith and his mother was the granddaughter of an infantry officer

ofNapoleon.

The birthplace of Henri was (is) a romantic medieval tower that was part of the ancient

walls of Laval, known as the Porte Beucheresse. But in 1855 his father's

business went bankrupt and the family was forced to leave the house, being practically

on the street. After the loss of the job sought refuge in the army, and in 1863, he enlisted

in the infantry for four years
