WELLINGTON AFC Club History
Formed in 1892 we are proud to be an FA Charter Standard Community Club. Initially the Club played in leagues based around Taunton and Tiverton. In the early 1960s it gained promotion to the Somerset Senior League and succeeded in achieving Western League status in 1978 which has been retained ever since, making the Club one of the League’s longest continuously serving members. The First Team entered the Western League in the First Division in 1978/79 season and has played at Premier Division level from 1981/82 to 1984/85 and 2008/09 to 2010/11. The team were promoted as First Division Champions at the end of the 2016/17 season. In their first season back in the in Premier Division the team finished a creditable 15th, they also reached the semi-final of the Somerset Premier Cup losing 4-1 away to Southern League Paulton Rovers. The following season the team finished in 16th place and last season were struggling near the foot of the table when the season was brought to an abrupt halt by the Coronavirus Pandemic. Manager, Tim Legg has made a number of new signings for the start of the new campaign and the team are hoping to improve on last seasons performances. All other seasons were played at Division One level. The Club’s Reserve side have played in the Devon and Exeter League Division One for four seasons. Unfortunately, the team failed to finish above eighth place for three seasons and last year were in a mid-table position before the season was brought to an early close. This season the League has been reorganised and the team will play in Division One West. Having played in the Devon and Exeter League for a number of seasons the A Team transferred to Division Three of the Taunton Saturday League for the 2018/19 season where they finished a very creditable third and gained promotion to Division Two for last season. For the forthcoming season they have been promoted to Division One as they were in topping the table when the season was forced to end. The Club’s Ladies played in the Somerset County Women’s League First Division last season but found that they were unable to compete with more experienced teams. Hopefully with new players the team will improve this season. This season the Club will again be running 21 teams in its Youth and Mini Sections. These teams see both boys and girls playing from the age of eight through to eighteen. The Club also has three Disability teams. In recent years Club Teams have had mixed fortunes in the leagues but a number have won the Sportsmanship Awards for their Age Groups and in 2018/19 season the Disability Teams won the Somerset FA Award for Disability Club of the Year.
The Club has a very successful website – www.wellingtonafc.co.uk and is makes full use of its Facebook and Twitter accounts which are very well supported.
We continue to work with the local Council’s and Wellington Sports Federation on the Somerset West and Taunton Pitch Strategy which will hopefully result in the Club moving to a larger ground and bring the majority of football pitches in the town to one site. Outside of its core footballing activities the Club is home to several darts and skittles teams and it runs a full programme of social events for members and non-members alike. The Function Room and Lounge are available for hire. (Please contact the Clubhouse Manager – Jenny Oxby on 01823 665410 for details)
COVID -19 In order to comply with Government requirements we will be taking everyone’s temperature and track and trace details before they are allowed to enter the ground for today’s game. Everybody is asked to take note of signs and direction indicators and observe social distancing whilst watching the game and in the Clubhouse. Please follow any guidance from stewards and keep safe.

MATCH REPORTS TOOLSTATION WESTERN LEAGUE PREMIER DIVISION
WELLINGTON 3 3 BRIDGWATER TOWN
(Match Abandoned) A scintillating local derby at the Playing Field on Wednesday night came to an abrupt end when it was abandoned in the dying minutes after a floodlights failure. The game was preceded by a minute’s applause (pictured) for one of the club’s greatest players, Mick Gough, who had sadly passed away the previous weekend. And the popular striker, who terrorised defences for so many seasons, would have thoroughly enjoyed an enthralling contest which saw the sides trade six goals before the disappointing conclusion.
The hosts went ahead after 15 minutes as the ball broke to Jamie Vaughan-Ryall and his shot from 20 yards clipped a defender to sail up and over former Wellington keeper Jake Viney and drop into the net. But it was two more ex-Wellington players who then put Bridgwater ahead with striker Jack Taylor and central defender Tom Ellis both capitalising on mistakes after 27 and 31 minutes respectively.
The scores were level eight minutes before half-time when Harry Walford’s cross was headed back across goal by Vaughan-Ryall and defender Josh Champion celebrated his birthday in style by diving to head home. If the first half had been dramatic, it was a shadow of events after the interval, starting with a long injury hold-up. Bridgwater midfielder Ryan Brereton – the son of another former Wellington player, Matt – sustained a serious knee injury and had to be stretchered off. We wish him a speedy recovery. That failed to knock the visitors out of their stride and they regained the lead after 67 minutes with a thumping header from recent signing Chris McGrath, son of the former Manchester United and Aston Villa defender, Paul. Defender Jason Quick produced a goal-line clearance to prevent Sam Towler – also ex-Wellington! – making it 3-1 in the closing stages yet it was Wellington who then finished the stronger. They made it 3-3 with the best goal of the game as substitute George Sinnott (also playing against his old club) cut in from the left and rifled a cracking low drive in off the far post. Shortly afterwards, they had appeals for a penalty turned down when another sub, the fit-again Glen Wright, went down in the box. During the lengthy added-on time caused by the earlier injury, Wellington launched repeated attacks with striker Jesse Howe bringing a brilliant reflex save out of Viney. But no-one can have predicted the final twist as – with four minutes still to play – a number of the floodlights went out, leaving the referee with no alternative but to halt proceedings prematurely. We await confirmation on whether the game will need to be replayed or whether the result will stand.
TODAY’S VISITORS HENGROVE ATHLETIC
We extend a warm welcome to the players, officials and supporters of Hengrove Athletic for today’s Buildbase FA Vase First Qualifying Round Game. Club History Hengrove Athletic F.C was formed in 1948 from players who were demobbed from National Service. As a footnote, there is also wartime history to the club colours of green and white. With the rationing and many shortages, football shirts were virtually unobtainable so all of the members of Hengrove Athletic F.C donated an ordinary white shirt and a mother of one of the players kindly dyed them green in the bath at her Knowle home. The colour green had no symbolic meaning. It was the only colour available at the time! The founding fathers of the club then agreed to retain these colours. A successful application was made to join the Bristol and Suburban League and they were placed in Division 3 for the start of 1948-49 season. A Reserve XI was then established in 1950 and in the same year Hengrove Hall was rented to hold club meetings and the social gatherings. The club continued to expand and the ‘A’ XI started in 1953, followed by the 30-plus XI in 1959. These four football teams made the club the largest in the Bristol and Suburban League at the time – after just eleven years. A ‘B’ XI replaced the 30 plus in 1962. The long search for a ground came to fruition on Sunday 7 June 1964 when Norton Lane was officially opened and Hengrove Athletic F.C took up residence. The first XI was accepted by the Somerset Senior League for the 1974-75 season, where they remained until 2005-2006 when they were runaway, unbeaten, Premier Division Champions and joined the Western League for the start of the 2006-07 season. Recent Times Our floodlights and stand were installed at the ground in 2007-2008 to achieve the necessary ground grading of the Western League. The EWW Stand was installed at the ground in 2012-2013 to enter the FA Cup and future possible promotions.
The first XI finished runners-up in Western League Division One in 2012-2013, achieving promotion to the Premier Division for the first time. They then lifted the Les Phillips League Cup in 2015-2016 before winning promotion to the Premier Division again in 2016/17. The following season, the club finished ninth in the table, their highest position ever, and also the highest placed Bristol team at this level, before being relegated in season 2018/19. The club also host three other clubs; Bristol Spartak, Three Lions FC and also St Aldhelm’s junior teams In July 2016, the attendance record for the ground was smashed when 1,693 saw the Grove host Bristol City in the annual BCFC Community Trust match. The club have also built up an impressive reputation as a great host for local youth cup finals and League Cup finals in recent years. Hengrove will celebrate their 75th anniversary in four years time, in 2023. The home ground is the AVB Stadium, named after our main sponsor AVB Commercial Repairs.

HISTORY OF THE BUILDBASE FA VASE
The FA Vase effectively replaced The FA Amateur Cup in 1974. In that year The FA Council had decided to abolish the official distinction between amateur and professional footballers and this meant the end of The Amateur Cup and Amateur Internationals involving England. In its first season 220 clubs entered, but they did not include those that had dominated in The Amateur Cup. Enfield, Hendon, Dagenham, Skelmersdale United and others at their level were immediately allocated to The FA Trophy. For the first time in history, small clubs – even village clubs – had the chance of playing in a national final at Wembley. The first Vase finalists were Hoddesdon Town from the Spartan League and Epsom & Ewell from the Surrey Senior League. The Hertfordshire side edged home 2-1 before a crowd of 9,000. Even a competition as democratic as The Vase had its elite clubs in the early years. Billericay Town, initially of the Essex Senior League, won it three times in four seasons. Halesowen Town, then in the West Midlands Regional League, appeared in three Finals and were successful in two. They even beat a Southall side that had a young Les Ferdinand leading the attack. Until the new Wembley opened in 2007 the record attendance for a Vase Final was the 26,489 who saw the drawn 1989 Final between Sudbury Town and Tamworth at the old Wembley. Tamworth won the replay 3-0 at Peterborough and Ian Moores, a former Division One player with Tottenham Hotspur, scored one of the goals. The 2013-14 Vase competition was the 40th in history. Wembley had hosted 34 Finals, Villa Park and St Andrews two each, Upton Park and White Hart Lane one each. Thirty-two different clubs have got their hands on The Vase, donated by former FA Councillor Frank Adams. Whitley Bay lead the way with four wins. Only six teams have won the FA Vase more than once. Whitley Bay are the only team to win the FA Vase three times in successive seasons, while Billericay Town, Tiverton Town and Halesowen Town have won back-to-back titles. As of 2017–18, at least one Northern League team has reached the final for 10 consecutive seasons, with teams from the league winning the title in all but two of those years. In 2017 Forest Green Rovers became the first FA Vase winners to go on to play in the English Football
League, while one former Football League team (Glossop North End) have been beaten finalists. Because of the Covid-19 pandemic the 2019-20 FA Vase was suspended and the Final between Consett and Hebburn Town will be played on Sunday 27th September. Unfortunately, Toolstation Premier Division colleagues, Bitton were beaten 1-0 after extra time in the semi-final.

TAUNTON SATURDAY LEAGUE - SEWARD CUP FINAL WELLINGTON A 2 2 CASTLEMOAT RESERVES
(3-1 on Penalties) Many congratulations to our A team on winning the Taunton Saturday League's Seward Cup in Thursday's final - held over from last season - at Minehead AFC. An entertaining evening saw them beat 3-1 Castlemoat Reserves on penalties after the 90 minutes had ended with the sides locked together at 2-2. Castlemoat took the lead after 25 minutes but Wellington drew level ten minutes later, Rohan Poulsom scoring from close range after a shot had been cleared off the line. When Jordan Sellick clinically converted a Poulsom free kick eight minutes into the second half, a Tangerines victory looked on the cards only for Castlemoat to draw level with 18 minutes remaining. The shootout saw Wellington convert all three of their penalties while Castlemoat missed the target from two and keeper Sully Harlow pulled off a brilliant save to keep out another.
