HENDRICKS REGIONAL HEALTH CHRONICLES | VOL. 2 - ISSUE 15 | HENDRICKS.ORG COLLABORATING TO END CANCER Dr. Rachel Scott says the reactions of her former medical school classmates reinforce her feeling that HRH is the place for her to be. “We’ve come so far in the past year, already opening a new office! I’ve had several friends tell me they are impressed by how much has progressed with our work at HRH”. Dr. Scott joined HRH in summer of 2015 and says she hit the ground running. She was a member of the team that helped create the vision of a continuum of care that is setting HRH apart from other healthcare providers in central Indiana. Her office is one of three that recently opened on the third floor of Medical Building 3. The three interconnected offices bring together plastic and reconstructive surgery with breast services, bone health services, genetic testing and survivorship support. The Putnam County native says she felt drawn to medicine in high school. “I love the science and enjoy helping people by working with my hands. I like that I can see an almost instantaneous change following a surgery.” Dr. Scott’s original plan was to become a general surgeon. A patient she encountered during her third year of medical school changed that. “I was on a plastic surgery rotation when a patient presented with a massive recession of the neck. I hadn’t seen anything like it before and I initially couldn’t think of how we were going to help. We performed a pec flap in which the entire pectoral muscle rotates to fill the defect left from removing the cancer. After several hours of surgery, the deformity was almost unnoticeable.” It was very memorable for her because of the positive impact the surgery had on the patient’s function and quality of life. That encounter also showed Dr. Scott that plastic surgery is more than cosmetic. “Plastic surgeons operate on cancer. We fix hands when bones have been crushed. We have a lot of offerings in terms of cancer care and reconstruction that are far outside of what people often think of as plastic surgery. We are a lot more than Botox and breast implant doctors.” Dr. Scott says she identifies with The Hendricks Way value of integrity the most. “Integrity is being honest with yourself in terms of the care you’re providing. Integrity is providing patients your best work. Integrity is being a member of the team and giving 100 percent. Without integrity, we fail.” Dr. Scott admits to being her worst critic. “The most challenging part of my job is that I worry I’m not making patients happy. I worry the reality of what I can provide does not meet their expectations. I genuinely like and care about my patients as people and don’t like feeling as if I’ve let them down.” HRH President & CEO Kevin Speer says Dr. Scott’s concern for her patients’ well-being is evident. “Dr. Scott is passionate about helping everyone she cares for embrace a healthy and vibrant life. She brings a laser focus on the patient experience to our organization.” Dr. Scott is enjoying the opportunity to help envision and shape how HRH continuously enhances patient care. “The attitude here is ‘what do we need to do to make that happen?’ After next steps are identified, action is quick. It’s exciting to look at all the changes we are working towards.” INTEGRITY IS ESSENTIAL TO OUR SUCCESS

Eating healthy is a challenge for many families. Add in the focus on candy during holidays such as Halloween and Easter and that challenge can seem insurmountable. As part of our mission to improve the overall health of our community, HRH is inviting everyone to celebrate Halloween with healthy fun for the whole family!

The inaugural Halloween party – called Hallowellness – will be held Saturday, October 29, from 9:30 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the Hendricks County Fairgrounds in the Hendricks Power Exposition Hall.

“This event represents our culture at Hendricks Regional Health and our community engagement,” said HRH President & CEO, Kevin Speer. “Every year, we partner with and support more than 200 organizations that share our mission to build a healthier community. Hallowellness is just one more way we are meeting our vision to be the community’s indispensable healthcare partner.”

Hallowellness will include activities for every member of the family. Each activity presents a fun and engaging way to learn about healthy lifestyles. These include hay rides, pumpkin decorating, face painting and games. Chef Charles from the HRH Copper Grill will also provide a spotlight spooky snack and Captain Colon and the Polyp Girls will make a special appearance. Hallowellness also features broom races for kids and a 5K walk/run. All activities except the 5K walk/run are free.

Event co-creators Lisa Seyffarth, HRH Exercise Physiologist, and Kaitie Delgado, HRH Clinical Dietitian, found community partners to be extremely receptive to providing families with this memorable Halloween celebration. The Pacers Fan Van and Nine13sports will join in the fun. In addition, the Switch Witch will make an appearance to teach children about trading in their candy on Halloween night for a special treat.

“As someone who is passionate about encouraging healthier lifestyles in families through nutrition and fitness, I am beyond appreciative that our partners want to be engaged in making a difference in the well-being of our community,” says Delgado. “With their support, families will leave Hallowellness with great memories of a not-so-scary, happy and healthy Halloween party.”

Costumes are encouraged and the event will offer prizes for several costume contest

categories! For more information and a link to register for the 5K, visit HENDRICKS.ORG/HALLOWELLNESS.

“Hallowellness is really putting The Hendricks Way values on display for everyone to see,” says Seyffarth. “Associates from across our organization are collaborating to ensure Hallowellness offers something for everyone. We are also engaging our community by raising awareness of this opportunity. Our loyalty to HRH’s mission and vision is leading to a truly one-of-a-kind event!”
