Hemoglobin Variants in Mexico

HEMOGLOBIN, 7(6), 603-610 (1983) SPECIAL FEATURE HEMOGLOBIN VARIANTS IN MEXICO Information on the distribution of abnormal hemoglobins i n Mexico i s derived from two sources; (a) surveys performed i n several different population groups; Indians and hybrid populations residing i n various parts of the Mexican Republic as well as i n a small sample of people of Italian ancestry; and (b) the study of patients with hemolytic anemia Indian Populations Surveys. The Indian population in Mexico speaks nearly 50 different languages, and Swadesh (1) using the gloto- chronological technique has qrouped them into five major cateqories: Tarasco, Macro-Mixteco, Macro-Nahua, Macro-Maya, and Macro-Yuma. Lisker and coworkers (2,3) surveyed a total o f 3311 "pure" Indians, belonging to 20 linguistic groups and found three subjects heterozy- gous f o r Hb S, and, i n two Nahua o f Puebla and one Mazatec from Oaxaca, they found a nonpreviously described variant that was called Hb Mexico (4,5). variant, Hb Chiapas (6). of the data of Cabannes and coworkers (7), who found 20 B-thalassemia trait cases i n 413 Maya Indians, that the abnormal hemoglobins are vir- tually absent in Mexican Indians, and that the sporadic finding of Hb S i s due to admixture with African subjects brought to Mexico as slaves during the Spanish domination of the country. The Cabannes (7) data should be analyzed cautiously since they differ from those found by other authors i n the Mayan and other Amerindian groups (8). the 6-thalassemia homozygous state i s very rare among them (9). hybrid populations in different parts of the country. calculated that in 1640, about 150,000 slaves were brought to Mexico and that the major proportion was of Bantu origin (10). The African immigration to Mexico took place mainly through the East (Gulf o f Mexico) Coast and, to a lesser extent, by the West (Pacific Ocean) Coast, through Acapulco. Lisker and coworkers (2,3) and others (11) studied several communities at both the East and \Jest Coasts and were able to demonstrate a variable incidence of Hb S heterozygotes and other hemoalobip abnormalities in over three thousand individ- uals from both regions (Figure 1). In one individual of the Chol group they found a second new (Table I.) From this information it can be said, with the possible exception Moreover, Hybrid Population Survw.
