Hembree Springs Elementary
2015-2016 Back to School Guide
Dear Parents,
I want to take this opportunity to welcome you back to school, and to applaud you
for all of the hard work that you have put into your children’s education! As your
child’s first teacher, you have been an integral part of the success of Hembree Springs, and I am so proud to be a part of such a great school family.
I look forward to continuing the great work that is underway and getting to know
new families as we transition back to school. Mr. Willis and I are welcoming sev-
eral new teachers to the staff roster, and I know that you will love each of
them! They were each chosen for their expertise and passion for teaching and
learning, and will complement the amazing staff that is already in place. You may
also see some familiar faces in new roles this year.
As Mr. Willis and I work with the staff to prepare for the new school year, we will
continue to work hard, have high expectations for ourselves and our students, and
continue to strive for success. While we work to prepare for students, I would like to ask you for your support to help your child be as successful as possible. Return-
ing to school is a big transition, and setting the stage at home will help them to
know that parents and staff have created a partnership for exceptional learn-
ing. Tasks such as helping with homework, consistent routines at home, arriving at
school on time, and wearing their school uniform are just a few ways that you can
help. There are also opportunities for you to help our school throughout the year,
and we welcome volunteers!
I am grateful for your support, and look forward to
moving into a new school year filled with endless pos-
sibilities – let’s work together to learn and grow be-yond our dreams!
For our children,
Laurie Woodruff Hembree Springs Elementary Principal

SCHOOL COUNSELOR Warmest Greetings, Hembree Springs Families!
I am absolutely thrilled to announce that I will be the coun-selor at Hembree Springs beginning this year. It is an hon-or to become a part of your fantastic school community, and I am very excited to meet all of you. I have been in education for six years, and have experience with each elementary grade level. I hold certifications in Elementary Education as well as in School Counseling, and attended the University of Georgia and the University of West Ala-bama. My counseling philosophy is centered around student safe-ty and success. I am extremely passionate about the im-portance of the well-being of the whole child, and I work to be an advocate for students and families. I also feel that being proactive in the process of reaching all students is extremely important, with counseling programs in place for both prevention and intervention. Helping students to learn and use positive, meaningful strategies in order to solve problems allows them to be more successful in the class-room. Communication and collaboration between families and educators is also extremely important in assisting stu-dents. My goal is for each child to feel safe, successful, and heard. I am looking forward to a wonderful year of communication, collaboration, and achievement. Please feel free to contact me at any time with thoughts, questions, or concerns.
Sincerely, Lindsey Albertson
CURRICULUM SUPPORT TEACHER (CST)
Greetings to the Hembree community, I am very excited to have the opportunity to join the leadership team as your new Curricu-lum Support Teacher at Hembree Springs. This is my 14th year as an educator. I attended SUNY (State University of New York) at Cortland for my undergraduate degree and Georgia State University for my Master’s Degree in Educational Leader-ship. I have worked in two districts in my career. My first five years were in Dekalb County. I then took a hiatus to have three children Zach (16), Cameron (15), and Samantha (13). Being a proud parent to my children has allowed me to develop many skills which have greatly influenced me as an educator. I re-turned to the classroom in the fall of 2007 as a fifth grade teach-er here at Hembree Springs. I have been an active member of the School Governance Council, and I am thrilled to have the opportunity to help shape and mold the future of our school. I have also been a part of the leadership team at Hembree through my role as grade level chair. I have been very fortunate to have had these experienc-es, and I am very excited to embark on my new journey as a CST. Hembree Springs is such a special place, and I look forward to
collaborating with the parents, faculty, and staff, as we work
together to continue the path of success and excellence. I
look forward to seeing many familiar faces at Open House and
meeting many new Hawks!

As we return to school, for the 2015-2016 year - I am honored and excited to embark on my 2nd year as PTA President. This will be my 4th year on our PTA board and the one lesson I have learned is that it takes a village to make anything successful. Our school continues to thrive and flourish because of the passion and heart of the people who walk the halls of HSE. I’m looking forward to continuing the working partnership we have es-tablished with Administration, Soaring Hawks Foundation, our School Governance Coun-cil our amazing teachers and invaluable staff. In the upcoming year, we will be doing our best to communicate school activities and information more regularly and concisely. We are planning on more regular emails and Facebook posts with short reminders of what's happening and new at Hembree Springs. Strong communication is a major component in keeping us at our school of excellence expectations. Our school's dedicated volunteer base rivals any of the schools in the area. I encourage each and every one of you to become involved in volunteering. The tasks could be as small or big as you choose - being part of positive change will always benefit our children. At the end of the day, the main focus is always the children...in your home, in our school and in our community. Thank you for your continuous support and I look forward to see-ing all of you at curriculum night on August 25th and 27th. With warm regards,
Allison Liguori

I’m John McKernan, dad to second grader Trey and husband to my beautiful
bride Tracy. It’s an honor to serve as the President of the Soaring Hawks Foun-
dation (SHF) after serving as an at-large member last year. This is my fourth
year as a Hembree Springs parent and I couldn’t be happier with my family’s
experiences at our school.
The SHF is a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization and is the fundraising arm of the
PTA. In short, we fund the PTA budget, which provides programs that make our
school great, such as Science Day and Student Book Publishing.
We also fund grant requests from teachers and staff, enabling them to implement
new tools and programs to better serve all of our students. Last year, we ap-
proved nearly $3400 in grants. These included: Sending two teachers to become
certified in the Orton-Gillingham approach to reading instruction; Reading Eggs,
a computer program our Kindergarten teachers rave about; and Flip cameras for
two classrooms.
We raise money by asking for donations instead of sending our children door-to-
door selling wrapping paper and cookie dough and receiving as little as 40-50%
of the profits. With the SHF, 100% of donations go to our school, our teachers
and our students, AND every donation is tax deductible.
Please consider making a donation to our Annual Campaign so we can have a
strong school year.
Thanks for your continued support of our
mission!

THE SCHOOL STRATEGIC PLAN
Parents, I am honored to serve as your School Governance Chair (SGC). This is my third year on SGC and my seventh year as an HSES parent and volunteer. I love Hembree Springs, our amazing teachers and staff and our fabulous community. My son Parker graduated last May and is be-ginning 6th grade at Elkins Pointe after six wonderful years at HSES and my daughter Samantha is beginning 1st grade which I know is going to be fabulous. We have a strong group of parents, staff members and community representatives working in partnership with the school administration to introduce initiatives that target student achieve-ment. Your SGC is responsible for reviewing and approving the school budget, designing and monitoring the School Strategic Plan (SSP) and proposing and adopting certain types of school policies. As we begin year three, the School Governance Council continues to focus on the long term student achievement outcomes defined last year in the Hembree Springs Strategic Plan. Through focus on professional development, instructional practices and family/community involvement, we are helping our students utilize higher order thinking skills, demonstrate mas-tery of written and verbal expressions / presentation and excel through career and academic enrichment. This year will be focused on two primary objectives, strengthening the school-wide communication processes and completing the organizational assessment as we finish the last year of the strategic plan. You will also see us celebrate the fifth year of the school uni-form with some exciting recognition and reward incentives. We will also have the exciting op-portunity to draft the plan for the next three years of excellence at Hembree Springs. As we move forward through the year, please feel free to engage any of the Council members to discuss the programs, provide feedback and offer suggestions. The SGC meets on the first Friday of every month so feel free to attend. Our meeting dates and agendas are posted on our school website. If you have questions or suggestions for us, please feel free to email me at [email protected] or call 404 307-6953. By Working Together we will continue to help our students Learn, Dream and Soar. Best Regards, Laura Calvert

We Want You!
If you are already involved, THANK YOU! We need your continued support.
If you’re not already involved, please JOIN US! We need your help! On average, we have ~ 7,000 volunteer hours a year generously donated by ~ 450 parents. That makes a tremen-dous difference for our students and staff. Imagine however, if those parents who are not currently volunteering also got involved and donated 3 hours to the school we would increase our volunteer time by 25%! More time allows us to provide additional programs, to share the work, and to further benefit our students.

Start Strong, Finish Stronger: 2015 - 2016 Campaign
Help us start strong so we can finish stronger!
At Hembree Springs, we start strong with a dedicated administration, talented teachers and staff, and
engaged and supportive parents. We strive to provide the best for all of our students and we need your
help to ensure we continue to not only meet, but exceed, the needs of Hembree Springs students,
teachers and staff. Our goal is to finish the school year even stronger than we started!
We don’t ask our students to sell wrapping paper or cookie dough door to door. We have our annual cam-
paign where 100% of your donation is tax deductible and 100% of the proceeds stay at our school. These
funds support student enrichment like: technology, science day, book publishing, the science lab, student
agendas, test prep, parent workshops and more. Join us to help each child Start Strong and Finish
Stronger.
Suggested donation: $100 per
family, but donations of any
amount are welcome and appreci-
ated. Monthly payments and/or
payroll deductions are available.

Start Strong! Finish Stronger! The Fund Development Committee of the Soaring Hawks Foundation is responsible for three things: Running an effective Annual Campaign, seeking outside grants that benefit our students, and funding Teacher Grants to enable our teachers to bring new methods and tools into their classrooms. The grants are self-explanatory, but you may be wondering what “Annual Campaign” means. The Annual Campaign is our fundraising effort. Instead of asking our students to sell candy/wrapping paper/magazines door-to-door, we ask each Hem-bree Springs family to make financial contribution to the Soaring Hawks Foundation, a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization which is the fundraising arm of the PTA. Our Annual Campaign enables Hembree Springs to keep every penny we raise instead of giving 50-60% of profits to a fundraising company. We understand that each family is unique and donation amounts will vary; please know that every donation, no matter the size, directly benefits our Hembree Springs students. Your donations are tax-deductible and you’ll receive a magnet to proudly display on your car after you donate! This year’s campaign theme is Start Strong! Finish Stronger! We have an amazing school but we can’t rest on our laurels. To ensure we finish the year even stronger than we start it, we need your donations. Please give so the PTA can continue to provide programs like Science Day and Student Book Publishing and so we can fund teacher grants to continue to help our students - our children – excel. Donations are accepted all year but any family that donates at Open House will be en-tered into a raffle as an extra Thank You. Looking forward to a successful campaign to benefit our students, Michael Sutton, VP of Fund Development Tracy Cocquyt-McKernan, VP

ease of participation. If so, jogging pants, knit pants/skirts/dresses etc in navy or khaki do meet the
dress code definitions. Hembree Springs spirit wear can also be worn.
Where can I get polos? You may purchase uniform shirts in both unisex and girls styles at a vari-
ety of stores such as Walmart, Target, Children’s Place, Land’s End, Old Navy, Lady Bugs and Lizards
consignment etc.
My child will not wear polos? Shirts or solid color in the uniform colors, white, navy, light blue,
and yellow are acceptable.
What about when it gets cold? Students add sweaters, sweatshirts, vests, tights/leggings etc in the
uniform colors of white, navy, light blue and yellow.
If you want embroidery? Embroidery is NOT required but can be purchased on our spirit wear
site http://hembree.deco-apparel.com/home. You can also purchase polos and have them embroidered
afterwards. For this embroidery contact Jenny Burge at [email protected]

that are in good shape. Drop them off at the front desk. Look for details soon on a consignment sale.
Where do our funds come from? How do we spend our money?
2015—2016
Total budget is $52K
Carrying over $25K from 2015 5K and 2014-2015 budget not spent
Requesting $14K from SHF
PTA funding comes from family donations to the Soaring Hawks Foundation (SHF), PTA membership and PTA-sponsored events. The PTA takes a conservative approach to budgeting and expense management, while providing worthwhile pro-gramming for our children. The PTA had strong year in 2014-2015, providing over 40 enrichment programs for our students, staff and families . The focus continued to be academic enrichment while increasing family engagement and expanding our business partners. The latter resulted in donated goods and supplies that offset costs. PTA received $19K of funding from SHF and self-funded $24K through community building events and programs like Hembree Runs Wild. For 2015—2016, the proposed budget is $52K which is up slightly due to a forecasted increase in enrollment. We carryover $25K from Hembree Runs Wild, efficient spending, cost offsets etc and project $13K of income from PTA programs and events. That leaves ~ $14K of funding needed from SHF. Our focus continues to be on academic enrichment supporting the project based learning and writing goals while continuing to grow our family engagement and nurture the strong culture of collaboration and engagement.

2015-2016 Proposed Budget and 2014-2015 Recap
How much money do we raise? Where do our funds come from? How do we spend our money?
The Soaring Hawks Foundation is excited for the new school
year and looks forward to growing resources for Hembree Springs.
2014 –2015 was a challenging but successful year
We raised nearly $24,000 from donations and corporate match-ing which was $7,000 less than last year but sufficient to:
Fund $19,605 of the PTA Budget
Fund $3,400 in Teacher Grants
Continued management of operating expenses
Increased the amount raised in our annual Teacher Experience
Raffle by $1,000
Paid out the $32,000 reserved for the observatory construction
We ended our fiscal year with over $29,000 in our bank ac-
count.
The 2015-2016 focus is continued funding of the PTA, teacher
grants and the Principal’s Wish List.

CARPOOL AND SAFETY:
The carpool lane is in front of the A wing hall.
Morning carpool begins at 7:15
Morning carpool is the lane closest to the building.
Students should be dropped off at school in carpool line. Do not walk your student through drop off zone traffic. Stay in the carpool line.
Say your goodbyes and have your child ready to exit the car in the mornings. This will ensure the carpool line keeps moving.
Students are allowed to exit your car only from the right side. THANK YOU!!!!!!!!
Afternoon carpool begins at 2:20
Afternoon carpool are the two lanes closest to the building .
Please pay close attention to the crossing guard on Hembree Rd and to the teachers and staff members working carpool.
Remember there is a cross walk between the flag pole and front door. Watch for people crossing.
Do not park your car in the third lane (in front of the school), in the bus lanes, or double park behind cars in the parking lot to drop your child off. If you need to come into the building please park in an empty space in the parking lot.
Please pull up to the very first staff member so that we can fit as many cars as possible in the drop off zone.
TARDIES
Students must be in their classroom by 7:40.
The best way to guarantee your student is not tardy? Have him or her ride the bus. Bus riders will never be marked tardy.
We recommend dropping your student off by 7:30 to ensure they have plenty of time. Carpool can get very busy between 7:25 and 7:40.
If your student is late, please come in to the building with him/her to sign him/her in.
DRESS CODE
We strongly encourage students to wear the school uniform
Monday through Thursday: blue/yellow/white tops; navy/khaki bottoms
Friday: HSES spirit wear shirts with jeans, shirts, pants
PE Days: Uniform or HSES spirit wear with navy shorts/gym pants etc if more comfortable
DISMISSAL: No students can be checked out of school after 2pm. You must either check-out before 2pm or wait until 2:20.
TRANSPORTATION CHANGES
During Open House, you will let the teacher know how your child gets home (bus, car rider, Primetime, etc).
To change that you must send in a signed note to your child’s teacher letting them know what should happen that day,
STUDENT SAFETY is always a priority for us. Remember all doors will remain locked during the school day. All visitors must ring the
bell on the camera pad to the right of the front door. When prompted, they will have to display their ID (driver's license) and state their name in order to be allowed to enter the building. Please remember to always bring your ID when you visit the school. In ad-dition, your photo identification or driver’s license will have to be scanned into the system.
It would not be possible to run the Soaring Hawks Foundation,
the PTA or the School Governance Council without dedicated
volunteers who give their time and talent to support Hembree
Springs. Please also join us in thanking the following board
members who ended their terms this year:
