Lindisfarne NewsStudent Drop Off/Pick Up Area at Mahers LaneThere are two car park levels and a student car park at the Mahers Lane campus. For the safety of your children and others please follow these guidelines. Before and after school the lower car park level is used for buses only. Parents, please do not park in or drive through this level before or after school – use the top level car park. With approximately 12 buses driving through this area of a morning and afternoon, this should decrease the congestion. The top car park level (where the shelter with seating is located) is designed as the student drop off and pick up area. To avoid congestion in this area we ask the following:
• Parents to move as far down the driveway as possible.• Do not stop on the crossing or in the middle of the driveway – move
to one side• Do not stop or park in the allocated disabled car park
The car park on the adjoining block is for senior students’ parking. In the afternoon parents are often parking in this area to pick up their children at the same time as our senior students are trying to leave. We are concerned with the number of younger students running behind vehicles that are reversing in this area. The correct pick up area is in the top driveway of the main school block. Another area of concern is Mahers Lane itself. Please do not double park to collect students or do a U–turn across the double lines. For the safety of all please collect students from the top driveway.

The Student VoiceHello again, citizens of Lindisfarne Grammar, and welcome back to just the facts. Today I’ll be discussing the truth behind the acclaimed ‘Mozart Effect.’The theory that ‘listening to classical music increases one’s intelligence’ originated from a study done in 1993 by Dr Frances Rauscher, who tested the effects of Mozart’s Sonata for two pianos in D Major, on 36 undergraduate students at the University of California. The study found that after just 10 minutes of listening to the old Wolfgang, students scored higher on IQ tests involving spatial reasoning by a full 8 to 10 points. The real catch though, is that since the original 1993 study which introduced the Mozart Effect, multiple studies by researchers around the world have attempted to replicate the results, and failed. Some researches claim that the Mozart Effect is specifically dependent on the type of test which is taken. Others say that the original test was unreliable and that unless the same results can be gained through repetition of the original study, we must remain skeptical about it’s validity.Now... that’s not to say that listening to classical music holds no benefits at all. Numerous studies actually do show that listening to classical music can induce relaxation and reduce anxiety levels. As a result of this new knowledge, some hospitals have began using it for its therapeutic benefits, playing it to patients to help them sleep or just to combat stress. Listening to classical music has also been shown to enhance ones ability to articulate emotions, something which has not only been consistently supported through scientific research, but stands to reason, considering that a lot of classical music is written to express and evoke emotions.Having said that, I think that if there’s one thing that society got out of the whole ‘Mozart Effect’ phase, it was an opportunity to be exposed to some of the most artistic and creative works ever written: works that not only offered insight into our musical heritage, but allowed us to broaden our horizons simply by escaping the world of all that was current in music, and revisiting the past. And that, fellow students, is just the facts.

Classroom Helpers @ Lindisfarne is a series of one hour workshops that are run over a four week period commencing on Friday 15 February. The course provides informative sessions to support parents who wish to help in the classroom. Classroom Helpers @ Lindisfarne provides an opportunity for participants to acquire new knowledge about literacy and gain an increased insight into your own children as literacy learners. It will also provide an opportunity for hands-on experience and will include demonstrations of learning activities in which classroom helpers may be involved during literacy time. Helpful hints for parents who wish to read together with their children will also be provided. The course has been designed to enable strong partnerships between home and school to be further developed and to recognise and value the role of parental involvement in the classroom setting.I encourage all those who wish to be parent helpers in literacy time this year at our school to attend these informative sessions and I look forward to working with you in the near future. Registration forms will be sent home soon. If you have any queries regarding the program, please do not hesitate to email [email protected]

What is Emotional Resilience?
Emotional resilience is an essential skill for all children. It is about feeling in
control and believing in one’s ability to work through setbacks and challenging
situations in a capable, effective manner. This capacity for resilience
empowers the child to develop positive coping behaviours, to persist and try
again in the face of failure, to bounce back with confidence and develop a
healthy self-esteem.
There are many times in children’s lives, whether it’s facing difficulties at
school or at home, dealing with changes within the family like a new sibling or
family breakup, moving house or being exposed to more serious situations like
natural disasters. As much as we would like to, we can’t always protect them
from something bad happening or the difficult times and stress of life. To
successfully cope with these changes and stress in their lives they need to be
emotionally resilient so they can continue to move forward.
A Quick Overview
The aim of this program is to build
children's resilience and self esteem
by teaching them strategies to cope
with emotions (e.g., worry, sadness
and anger) and social challenges (e.g.,
friendship difficulties and bullying).
Children will also learn to identify
their strengths and how to use these to
s uc ce s s f u l l y na v i ga t e l i f e ' s
challenges. This program is offered
as 8 x 1.5hour sessions over 8 weeks.
A group parent psychoeducation

Sugar and spice and all things nice, that’s what little girls are made of. Without
warning though, your little girl is confronted with whispers, rumours, gossip, and
nasty behaviours. From the beginning of Grade Three, girls start using
exclusionary tactics and other covert ways of bullying with the intent to isolate and
hurt their friends.
Most girls at times are the target of this type of bullying. They are, at other times,
bystanders. Sometimes they are even the aggressor, often as a way to establish and
maintain social positions. Girls may be best friends one day and cruel the next.
These behaviours are not okay and need to be challenged. Considering identity
formation in girls is crucial in their primary school years, the impact of early
friendships and coping with social struggles can be long-lasting and may
significantly impact on future relationships.
Many bullying programs do not address the complicated issues around girl
friendships and cliques. Additionally, many parents feel overwhelmed and ill-
equipped to handle these issues with their daughter, particularly when they are
unable to influence another child’s behaviour.
A Quick Overview
The ‘Sugar & Spice’ program will
expose these girl bullying behaviours,
assist your daughter to make healthy
relationships, empower your daughter
to deal with this behaviour and
provide her with strategies to manage
friendships and effectively resolve
conflict.
The program is offered in five two
hour sessions over five weeks.
