From the Principal Welcome back to the new school year and we trust that your sons and daughters have returned refreshed for 2012, a year that promises to be engaging and stimulating as we go about the important work of providing learning opportunities and experiences unique to Lindisfarne. Taking advantage of these for the first time are 162 new students, 58 in Preschool, 38 in Years K to 4, and 66 at Mahers Lane in Years 5 to 12. This is largest new intake we have ever had and we look forward to welcoming these families to the Lindisfarne community. Below we list all of those new students:

2013 Sibling EnrolmentsThe School is in the process of commencing the 2013 new enrolment interviews for 2013. If you have another child you would like to enrol for 2013 please complete the Enrolment Application Form (available from the Enrolments tab on the school website) and return it to the School.
Lindisfarne NewsStudent Drop Off/Pick Up Area at Mahers LaneThere are two car park levels and a student car park at the Mahers Lane campus. For the safety of your children and others please follow these guidelines. Before and after school the lower car park level is used for buses only. We ask parents not to park in this level before or after school – use the top level car park. Approximately 12 buses come through this area of a morning and an afternoon. The top car park level (where the shelter with seating is located) is designed as the student drop off and pick up area. To avoid congestion in this area we ask the following:Parents to move as far down the driveway as possible.Do not stop on the crossing or in the middle of the driveway - move to one sideDo not stop or park in the allocated disabled car parkThe car park on the adjoining block is for senior students’ parking. In the afternoon parents are often parking in this area to pick up their children at the same time as our senior students are trying to leave. We are concerned with the number of younger students running behind vehicles that are reversing in this area. The correct pick up area is in the top driveway of the main school block. Another area of concern is Mahers Lane itself. Please do not double park to collect students or do a U-turn across the double lines. For the safety of all please collect students from the top driveway

A new school year means a fresh start for students. Regard-less of your child’s performance last year, they start school with a clean slate. A break offers students the chance to begin new habits and adopt new behaviours.
Here are seven ideas to help you make the most of the fresh start and make this year your child’s best year ever year at school:
1. Commit to your child going to school every day on time.
One of the most important things you can do to ensure your child has a bright future is to make sure he or she goes to school every day – and gets there on time. Kids spend more time asleep than at school, so we need to maximise every day to get full value.
2. Help kids start each day well. A good night’s sleep, a healthy breakfast and some words of encouragement from you will help set a positive tone for a day of learning. This may mean that you adjust your morning routine so that kids have plenty of time get up, eat and get ready for the day.
3. Establish work & study habits. The most successful students are those that develop regular study habits that suit their lifestyle, their study style and their school’s expecta-tions. Find out the work expectations from your child’s or young person’s school and help them establish a work routine that matches.
4. Make sure your child gets enough sleep. Many children and young people are sleep-deprived, which impacts on their well-being and their learning. A good night’s sleep consolidates learning, as well as assist future learning. Children need between 10-12 hours of sleep each day, while teens need a minimum of nine hours. Help kids get sufficient sleep by having a regular bed-time and get-up time each day. Have 45 minute wind-down time each night, and remove screens and mobile phones from bedrooms.
5. Encourage kids to exercise. Kids today get less exercise than those of past generations, which is an impediment to learning and mental health. Health professionals recommend a minimum of 60 minutes of exercise per day for kids of all ages. Encourage kids to play sport; promote free and active play and look for ways to make moving part of their daily lives.
6. Focus on being friendly. Schools are very social places requiring kids to negotiate many different social situations each day. Encourage kids to be open and tolerant; to be friendly; to be involved in plenty of activities and to be social risk-takers.
7. Develop self-help skills. Successful students are often well-organised, self-directed and self-motivated. You can foster organisational skills and self-direction by developing simple, age-appropriate self-help skills related to their every day lives. Such skills asmaking lunches, packing school bags, and organising after school schedulescan be great lessons that impact onhow kids perform at school.
At the start of the school year kidsare more likely to adopt changesthan at any other time. Make themost of the opportunity byfocusing on two or threeareas to really focus onand you’ll find that therest will fall into place.
