“Helping farm families in crisis” is not a phrase that is taken lightly at Farm Rescue. Our dedicated team of selfless volunteers and generous sponsors allows us to reach out in ways like no other non-profit organization. We provided timely assistance to more farm families who experienced major injury, illness or natural disaster than in any previous year. We assisted 50 farm families in 2013 and more than 250 farm families since our inception in 2006.

Tragedies aren’t planned. They happen at the least-expected moment. Thanks to the free planting, harvesting and haying assistance provided by Farm Rescue, families are able to bridge unexpected crises so they have an opportunity to continue viable operations for future generations.

The continuation of viable farms is the organization’s focus. These viable operations are the backbone that sustains the strength of rural communities and businesses. As a result of the assistance provided by Farm Rescue, farm families can survive potentially devastating circumstances, which in turn helps the economic well-being of communities.

Farm Rescue is able to lend a helping hand to those experiencing unexpected crises. It has become a common sight to see the Farm Rescue fleet of trucks, tractors or combines traveling through rural communities to the next farm that is in need of assistance. We are proud to be helping the very farm families and rural communities that built America’s heartland.

We are having a positive impact on many people. When I say “we,” I am referring to the Farm Rescue “family” of compassionate and generous volunteers, sponsors and supporters who make our mission possible. We sincerely thank you for lending a helping hand to our noble and worthy cause. You are making a positive impact in the lives of others far beyond the immediate farm families we assist. The tangible and intangible benefits are far-reaching in terms of families and communities.

We welcome new volunteers, sponsors and supporters. You have an opportunity to clearly show that you care about the well-being of farm families and rural communities. Farm families consistently praise volunteers, sponsors and supporters of Farm Rescue. We hope that you will join us in making a positive impact for present and future generations of farm families and rural communities.

Over 30 years ago, a cow fell on Daryl De Groot injuring one of his knees. It would be 2005 before he finally went in for knee

replacement surgery. What should have been a simple procedure turned to the worst when the artificial knee became askew. To correct the problem, another knee replacement surgery was performed in February of 2012.

All was going well until staph infection set in. Antibiotics seemed to clear the infection, but in March of 2013, the infection returned. Daryl was taken to Mayo Clinic where doctors removed his knee and told him that he would remain knee-less for the next two months, which meant no fieldwork.

A friend of the De Groot’s told them about Farm Rescue and encouraged them to apply for assistance. “I had never heard of Farm Rescue,” said Daryl “but I’m glad that I called them.” Farm Rescue rolled into the farm with RDO sponsored equipment to plant the De Groot’s crops, assuring them an income later in the year. Daryl had a new knee put in and has returned to working on the farm – a farm that endured a crisis and remains “home” for the De Groot family thanks to the generosity of many sponsors and donors who support the mission of Farm Rescue.

On March 28, 2013, Shawn Sundberg’s day started out with a soggy living room, courtesy of the melting ice on the roof.

After climbing up on the ladder to remove the ice, the ladder slipped and Shawn fell 10’ to the Sundberg’s concrete driveway.

With two broken legs, Shawn was sent to Rochester, where he and his wife, Amanda, remained for 10 days. Fortunately, they farm with Shawn’s dad, but like Amanda said, “When you have two farm families, you have two family farm’s worth of work.” Shawn’s dad suggested they contact Farm Rescue, and since Amanda works at the local grain elevator, she was very familiar with Farm Rescue.

Following the application process, Farm Rescue was able to lend a hand planting the Sundberg’s crops, relieving Shawn from the worry and allowing him to focus on healing. Shawn spent four months in a wheelchair, went through therapy, and made a full recovery.

Amanda said, “Our four-year-old was especially excited that the Farm Rescue Banquet was on her birthday so that she could see Charlie

(Bartsch), Pete (Von Bank), and Louie (Rothmann) again.” The Farm Rescue volunteers arrive on the scene as part of the crew, but when they leave, they’re part of the family.

RDO Equipment Company has been the Exclusive Equipment Sponsor since the in-ception of Farm Rescue. Their green John Deere equipment planted the first seed when we started helping farm families in 2006. That seed of generosity sprouted into what has become a bountiful field of compassionate sponsors and volunteers from across the nation.

Had it not been for RDO Equipment Company sponsoring the field equipment, (and other sponsors providing operating funds), we would have never been able to help 250 + farm families. They provide the best available equipment and service to ensure that we do an outstanding job for the assisted farm families.

RDO Equipment Company is the leader in their industry. They are clearly helping farm families and rural communities throughout the region. Their sponsorship commitment to the Farm Rescue organization is impressive and we are honored to be partners in helping people who have experienced unexpected crises.

Farm Rescue operations are funded by donations from businesses, organizations and individuals that support America’s tradition of independent family farms and strong rural economies.

We do not distribute funds to farmers. All donations are used to pay for the many expenses associated with planting, harvesting and haying of crops.

Farm Rescue’s board of directors and president are volunteers and receive no monetary compensation. Supporters of Farm Rescue can feel confident that their donation is directly helping families experiencing an unexpected crisis.

Refer A Farm FamilyWe encourage sponsors, friends and neighbors to refer a farm family that may be in need of assistance due to a major injury, illness or natural disaster. Farmers are a strong, independent group of people and are sometimes hesitant to ask for assistance. Oftentimes, it is a neighbor or business which anonymously refers a farm family that has experienced a major injury, illness or natural disaster. We then contact the family and see if they could use a helping hand to make it through an unexpected crisis. Farm Rescue is here to help and we all know that everyone needs a helping hand at one time or another in life. Please do not assume that someone else may need the help more than you.

Call 701-252-2017 or visit farmrescue.org to apply for assistance or refer a family in need.

It takes a special womanto be a farmer’s wife. Her duties number many. It’s not an easy life.

Her day begins before the sun, With others still in bed. Her hands prepare the early meal To keep her family fed.

With chores that need done dailyShe hasn’t time to spare. Her hands are never idle. She works with reverent care.

Her husband holds her high aboveThe women seen in town. She’s in the field when days are longAnd rarely lets him down.

It takes a special personTo stay when things get tough. But a life of any other kindJust wouldn’t be enough.

From calves to crops to kids,She prays about them all.Her faith is never daunting,With it she will not fall.

She’s the rock that remains solidIn the farmer’s changing life.No words can ever thank her enoughFor being his “farmer’s wife.”

Long before the sun rises, the farmer’s strong hands start the day clasped together to pray.

Asking God’s blessings on the day and the strength to deal with whatever comes his way.

With folded hands he prays for family, friends, and his fields. He knows his crops need a good yield.

From sun up to sun down his hands have cared for his family, plowed the fields, and tilled the ground.

After he has fed the flocks, and harvested the grain, he looks to Heaven and thanks the Lord for the evening rain.

As his family gathers round the table for the evening meal, his strong hands hold the hands beside him. He gives thanks to the Heavenly Father for the fruit of his labor, and asks for wisdom to guide him. Each wrinkle on his hands shows the love, devotion, hard work and pain; But through God’s love, his perseverance will sustain.

God has said the rain, the snow, the sunshine, and the night all have purpose and a season. The farmer’s hands know the reason. The farmer’s hands are done for the day, one last time they are clasped to pray.Thanking God for the beautiful day the Master has sent his way.
