Monday, Jan. 22, 20181621 A card was started for
theft per an officer’s request.Tuesday, Jan. 23, 2018
1023 A Fort Peck man called about a yellow lab dog stand-ing in his driveway of his old house.
1247 A deputy checked out the location of a passenger car that was sitting with its door open bearing SD license plates. He was unable to get a return on the plates. After making a phone call, the deputy found the car’s owner, who was just here work-ing on a job. No law enforcement action was taken. The deputy
advised the car owner to correct the plate.
1258 A Glasgow female re-ported a middle-aged man wear-ing a red coat pacing on the road near Mattfeldt Electric. She stated people were having to go around him as he was right in the driving lane. He appeared to be talking to himself and yelling. When the deputy got to the scene, the man was out of the street and waiting on the side to get across the street to get to the motel.
1543 A Glasgow female re-ported that another female had flipped her off and was using vulgar language in the underpass about 2-5 minutes ago. She was headed northbound and the other female was headed southbound in a red SUV.
1753 A truck driver was being chased by a red Chevy car. The occupant was showing his penis. The caller believes the suspect is a pervert. Dispatch advised a deputy. The caller said they were going by MM 537 then. The park-ing lights on the car didn’t work. He will sign a complaint. The caller said they were coming up on Glasgow and the deputy was following the suspect vehicle. He was with him at Holiday by 5:26 p.m. and he took care of the complaint.
1913 A warrant was served and an arrest made on one adult male in Glasgow.
Wednesday, Jan. 24, 20180801 A Glasgow female re-
quested a coroner.0809 A Glasgow male re-
ceived a call from a number that said Fort Shaw on it and the phone number. He wasn’t able to answer the phone, so he tried to call the number back and just got a recording that said the number was not accessible at that time. He now believes the call was a potential scam as his wife got a call from this number at her office and one of her co-workers got the call this morning. He wanted the police to know because it ap-pears they are calling a bunch of people here.
1022 A Glasgow officer re-quested a card be started for an abandoned, trashed out Ford extended cab by the Lloyd Build-ing. He contacted the registered owner, who said he abandoned the vehicle a year or so ago by
Trails West. He has heard over the course of this time other peo-ple have been using it. He doesn’t want the vehicle, so the officer will get in touch with towing company and have it moved.
1335 A Fort Peck male called to seek help getting a protection order against his younger brother who was threatening him.
1437 A Hinsdale female spoke with a deputy about an issue with her landlord.
2318 A deputy reported an abandoned vehicle behind the Nashua School. The deputy reported the vehicle must have broken down. It was locked up and has fishing gear inside.
2337 Dispatch received a hang-up call from a cell phone.
Thursday, Jan. 25, 2018
0729 A larceny/fraud case. A male called about receiving a bill from the North Texas Tollway Authority in Dallas, Texas, for unpaid fees in the amount of $65.88 for going through tolls on multiple dates. The paperwork clearly shows it is a Cascade County vehicle. The caller noti-fied them of this and they are requesting further information on this vehicle. An officer is coming to pick up the paperwork and then give this caller a return call.
0757 A Nashua female re-ported a doe was hung up in the fence on the north side of Hwy. 117. She said it was still alive and probably needed to be put down.

Out and About in Saint Marie
and BeyondBy FRANk AND LIN VARGO IIICOuRIER CORRESPONDENTS
Lona B. Highfill, age 87 was our good neighbor and same with her son/caregiver, Don Watson. Lona passed away on Sunday, Jan. 28. As we remember, Don and his mom welcomed our family to the neighborhood when we first arrived in Saint Marie in October of 2006.
She was such a sweet lady and had health issues back then, that kept Don busy, but we cannot say enough of the dedication to his mom and her needs.
Several people asked about a memorial service or funeral service for Lona, and Don stated that he quietly had her buried the day before, Feb. 2, and thought that either this coming spring or summer he would have a memo-rial service for her.
To Don and family/friends, we are so sorry for your loss.
We have mentioned before and remind everyone again that if you would like to be a candidate for either the North Valley County Water & Sewer District Board of Directors, there are three posi-tions to be filled, and the Saint Marie Rural Fire District Board of Trustees with two positions open. Please go to the Courthouse, Clerk & Recorder’s office. They will help you with all the informa-tion you need and will help you apply for a position on the ballot. The deadline for applying will end on Feb. 12, and election day will
be May 8.To make sure you can vote in
these elections, check to see if you are registered to vote at the Court House clerk’s office, and if you are not signed up, please fill out a voters’ registration card.
Our own 2017 VFW “Fire-fighter of the Year” recipient Chief Robert Esaias and former employee/general manager of the North Valley County District Wa-ter & Sewer Dept. has applied at the Clerk & Recorder’s office for the North Valley Water and Sewer District Director’s position and the Saint Marie Rural Fire District Board of Trustees position. Also, at this time we know that for both the Water Director position and the Fire Board trustee position, Alice Hawkins, former Water Department employee, has also applied. Maria Sugg has applied for Water Board Director position, stating that it is time for a change and to bring the community to-gether. Phil Kantelis has applied for St. Marie Rural Fire District Board trustee. Any other persons that apply, we will check to make sure we can include them in the next article.
On Feb. 3, we spoke to Esaias, who stated he wants to help our community and that is why he is applying for the positions.
Hugh Frankson was just ap-pointed Jan. 16 to fill the vacancy on the Water Board for the Roger A. Davis position, and should be a good addition.
We were invited to join the Saint Marie Fire Department on the evening of Feb. 3, to watch
them with their smoke training. Very interesting and want to thank Chief Esaias and all the firefight-ers for letting us be there.
Right now, the department includes Chief Rob Esaias, Asst. Chief August Aho, Captain An-thony Hebert, Captain Nicholas Degreek and firefighters Jamie Rennick, Jeremy Aauberg, Mike Hover, Elias Mitchell, Cory Miller and Greg Pederson.
Frank and I had stopped in for a quick bite to eat at Glas-gow’s McDonald’s, and we saw something we had never seen before. A hearse pulled into one of the parking spots by the drive through and Frank turned to me and asked if that was some kind of omen. NOT! As we left, Frank spoke to the man from the hearse as he was approaching the door, smiled and said they don’t have a McD’s in Malta so they decided to stop in for a lunch on the run, you might say before heading back to Malta. The young gentleman’s name is Matt Pugh and he works for Kirkwood Funeral Home. He stated that the job found him after he had retired from the Air Force. He also was able to tell us some interesting things about the old Glasgow Air Force Base, aka Saint Marie now.
His brother had been hired by Boeing to do an electrical job for them here and he explained about some of the planes that have come in here, like the King of Jordan’s plane.
A very interesting man and a very nice man to boot. We wish him good luck in his new life outside the military and to his family, too, which they now can enjoy a “hometown” instead of being stationed at so many differ-ent bases. One was Hawaii, where Frank was stationed and only one
hangar apart.Matt also told us that the owner
of Kirkwood Funeral Home, Greg Kirkwood, was stationed at Glasgow Air Force Base in the 1960s.
Women’s Bible Study will be held, Tuesday, Feb. 13, at 7-8 p.m. Bible study is held at 195 Cedar Circle and if you do have any questions, please call Sherry at 524-7368.
Episcopal Worship Service will be held this coming Sunday, Feb. 11, at 10 a.m. at 2 Lakeview Drive. If you have any questions please call Alice at 524-3397.
There will be a Co-op steering committee meeting on Feb. 10, at 1 p.m.
A Fire Board meeting will be held on Feb. 20, at 8:30 a.m. and the Water & Sewer Board meeting will be held at 9:30 a.m., both at Town Hall.
We have just heard from Anna and Karl Moody, who were once Saint Marie residents and had moved to Colorado where Karl was driving truck. They have now moved to Florida, and Anna reminisced on our winters here. I can’t imagine why she would enjoy Florida’s warm weather instead of our snow and frigid temps we have had.
On Feb. 2, Ground Hog Day, Punxsutawney Phil, the world-famous groundhog, did emerge from his burrow in western Penn-sylvania and saw his shadow, which means another six weeks of winter.
Hope the rest of the week will be a good one.
ST. MARIE NEWSFROM 01-31-18
The sheriff’s department has posted something very important for residents here in Valley Coun-
ty. This really hits home since we do know and worry about a resident here in Saint Marie that this has happened to.
It seems like we are all getting so many unwanted calls, emails and mail lately. The Sheriff’s of-fice has posted on their Facebook page helpful tips from the Federal Trade Commission. We won’t post all 10 tips here, but it mentioned one in particular, which is the one we know about, number 9: Don’t deposit a check and wire money back. By law, banks must make funds from deposited checks available within days, but uncov-ering a fake check can take weeks. If a check you deposit turns out to be a fake, you’re responsible for repaying the bank.
The Sheriff ’s department states: Remember, no one is giv-ing away checks for free or giving you the bulk of the money to do them a favor. Never give your bank information or personal in-formation out to anyone, even if they have your account number. Most places you have accounts with will contact you via mail before they contact you on the phone. If they do call you on the phone, tell them you will go no further until you have received something in writing. At this time, you can end the call and call the company yourself from the num-ber on your most recent bill to see if the phone call they made to you was legitimate or not. If you find you have been a victim of a fraud, do not hesitate to call law enforcement.
Ask questions, do not believe everything they are saying. Never give them any information what so ever over the phone. Do online searches of the name or company name that has called you. You can then add scam, review or
complaint into the search line and actually see what others have said about this product or company. I do this also with phone numbers and you can get a pretty good idea if they are a scam or legitimate.
Also, don’t believe your caller ID. Technology makes it easy for scammers to fake caller ID infor-mation, so the name and number you see aren’t always real.
Sign up for free scam alerts from the FTC at ftc.gov/scams. Get the latest tips and advice about scams sent right to your in-box. And check out Valley County Sheriff’s Office on Facebook, which will have all 10 tips.
A couple of weeks ago, we went to Williston with our family. We left early in the morning and about 8 miles from Saint Marie, we saw a car on the side of the road. We did not recognize the vehicle until we came alongside it and the driver, Saint Marie resident James Logan, was busy trying to get the jack out of the back of the car since he had got-ten a flat. His granddaughter and wife were with him. The wind was fierce that morning and so frigid cold, our concerns were that it wouldn’t take long before frostbite would set in. His spare tire was under the back of the car, which hit home since ours is the same way and he was having trouble getting the spare loose. We have to thank the many people who were driving by. They all slowed down to ask if they could help. Long story short, our son-in-law was able to loan him a tire and get the Logan family back on the road. But it also reinforced the importance of a winter emer-gency kit in the car in case you are in an area that would not have had help available in such harsh conditions.
