The annual prep gridiron selections were " made for the 23rd time, under the Helms All-Southern California Board of Football banner, at Helms Hall in Los Angeles. The selections were made from among the 15 Southern California C.l.F. leagues, comprising the large schools of the area. It did not take the Helms Board long to determine a player of the year for the 1959 season, as left halfback Brown of Long Beach Polytechnic High School was named as this season's top football player. Performing for Coach Dave Levy's Jackrabbits, the strongest team in elF ranks for the past t1;IO years, Hillie Brown led his team to the Harry J. r100re League title and the ClF Northern Group Champion- ship in the large schools division. Brom is described by his coach as one of the most valuable players he has ever coached and his 140 points in 11 games set a new Long Beach Poly all-time scor- ing mark. Co-captain of this year's Poly team, Brown carried the ball 126 times in 11 games for 1,707 yards and a fabulQus 13.5 average. He completed 14 of 30 passes for 292 yards and three touchdo1AJl1s. He personally accounted for 22 TDs himself and eight extra points for his 140 points. This topped large school scoring in the CIF for 1959. Over a three-year period at Long Beach Poly, Coach Dave Levy's record no\'l stands at 28-1-2 and t1.vO straight elF crowns. vlillie Bro'Wrl will receive his player of the year medal award at the 23rd annual All-Southern California Board of Football Awards Program to be held at Hall on Saturday morning, January 16, at 10:30 a.m. At this time, all those named for All-Southern California and All-Los Angeles City football team receive framed scrolls. Brown will a.lso have his name engraved upon the Paul Helms Trophy which is permanently lodged in Helms Hall. Long Beach Poly led all schools in placing gridders on the first Brown, Lonzo Irvin (fullback) and lvIike Giers (tackle) made the top eleven. for 950 yards during the season and averaged 9.7 yards per carry, as he scored points on 14 TDs and 11 extra points. and Huntington Park following with four selections each. Fremont, winner of theSouthern League crown and Hollyt'food, l'~estern League knigpins, placed three playersrespectively.

Nineteen Los Angeles City High Schools are represented on this year's All­City Football Teams, -with three 12-player teams selected. Balloting for 1959 CityPlayer of the Year was heated, but follo'tdng lengthy discussion, Reseda High School's6 15, 215-pound quarterback, Hal Bedsole, was named for player of the year honors.Described by his coach, Roy Jae, lias the greatest player on earth," Bedsole averaged10 yards per carry (725 yards on 72 carries) and passed for 462 yards and four TDs(33 completions out of 75 thro:m) during the season. Hal was the city's leadingscorer in 1959 with 115 points.

Hal Bedsole's scoring total of 115 points in 10 gan~s, fell just 10 shy ofthe Los Angeles City High School record of 125, set by Bill Howard of Nanual Artsin 1930. Bedsole, along with league players of the year -- Lar~ Bryan (Eastern),Chuck Steel (\-Jestern), Steve Voigt (Northern), Curtis Be.l"lnett (Southern), Tom Gamer(East Valley) and Teruo Yamamoto (Harine) -- "Will be on hand to receive their framedscrolls and medal awards at the 23rd Annual All-Southern California Board of Foot­ball Awards Program to be held at Helms Hall on Saturday morning, January 16th at10:30 a.m. At this time all those players named for honors on both A.ll-Los AngelesCity and All-Southern California C.I.F. teams will be presented with their awards.

Banning High School, defending City Champions, which lost in a stilllningupset to Fremont (25-19) in the city quarter-finals, led all city teams in placingmen on the three teams for 1959. End Leonard Dufur and bacl:s Teruo Yamamoto andRichard Mc~ahon were the first team selections, while tackle Ray Avila and centerL;ike Ferragamo made the second team. Reseda High, ~Jest Valley title holders for1959, and City finalists (lost to Huntington Park 46-6) placed player of the yearHal Bedsole at QB and tackle John ::"Jalker on the first team, Steve Ogden, back onthe second and center Jerry ~yregard on the third squad. Reseda defeated Franklin,Northern League title holder, 15-0, and Southern League champion Fremont, 14-6, be­fore bowing to Huntington Park in the finals.

Powerhouse Huntington Park High, juggernaut of Los Angeles City footballfor 1959, placed center-linebacker A:-lie "Skipll Husbands on the first squad alongwith Larry Bryan, Eastern League player of the year. Bryan, Coach Ray Vernoy'sstar left halfback, was a shining li~~l·_t in Huntington Park's "un over Reseda in theCity finals. He carried 13 times for 121 ~~rds and a 9.3 average and two touchdowns.Teammate Craig Fertig, H.P. quarterback, who passed for 56 yards (4 of 5 completed)and averaged 5 yards on 11 carries, '·-ras named to the second All-City team. TackleBrad Ohm was named to the third squad. Huntington Park averaged 37 points in fiveEastern League games and 41 points in three 1959 playoff games.

Chano Lujan was again named to a third team guard spot; Steve Ogden, Reseda back,moved up a notch from his third team post last year, while "Skipu Husbands jumpedto the first team from last year's third squad. Due to injury Fremont's AnthonyLorick did not make this year 1s team. He '"laS City Player of the Year in 1958.

Coach Frank Nobbe's Fremont Pathfinders, runners-up in Los Angeles City Foot­ball in 1958 and semi-finalists this year, won the Southern League title again in1959 although the team's star fullback and '58 City Player of the Year AnthonyLorick missed four ball ga;ae~..

Fremont finished the league season with a perfect 5-0 mark, amassing 133points over the five games.. Curtis Bennett, Coach NObbe's 51g ft , 16S-pound fling­ing QB.. who received unanimous backing as top player in the league for 1959,passed for 16 TDs during the 8-1 season. Bennett was also instrumental in Fre­mont 1 s upset victory over Barming in the quarter-finals of the City Playoffs,leading his team to a 25-19 win:. Reseda defeated Fremont in the semi-finals,14-6.

Three players repeated on this year's All-Southern League team.. Carl Jones,I~1anual Arts tackle, again 1roJas named to the first team. Curtis Bennett moved upfrom last year's second team, while FreEl Walzer was again named to the secondteam. Fremont' s great fullback, Anthony Lorick, two-time All-City performer, wasnot named to this year's All-Southern League team because of injury..

Three lower classmen were named to this year' s Southern League team, whiletwo made the second team. Dorsey sophomore tackle, L.J. Johnson, is the onlysophomore on the squad.

Final standings in the Southern League went like this: Fremont (5-0),Nanual Arts (4-1)., :'1ashington (2-3)" Jefferson (2-3), Los Angeles (2-3), andDorsey (0-5 ).•

Franklin and Verdugo Hills, both of which came out on the long end of 4-1records for 1959, placed three players each on the All-Northern League first teamas selected by members of Helms All-Southern California Board of Athletics at itsannual meeting last week. Franklin, lrdnner of the Northern title by virtue of a13-7 win over Verdugo Hills, placed its star halfback Steve Voigt on the first teamwith "player of the year" tag firmly fastened on his jersey.

Coach Gus Spaker calls Voigt lithe finest back I have had in 20 years of coach­ing and undoubtedly the most instrumental in winning Franklin I s championship. It

Voigt's total yardage from running and passing amounted to 1278 yards, 540 passingand 738 running. He averaged 5.1 yards on the ground and scored nine TDs, whilecompleting 23 of 50 passes for five TDs.

Seven players repeated on this year's All-Northern League team from last year.Bill Renison, Eagle Rock halfback, and Harshall's fine guard Chano Lujan, were onlast year I s first team where they find themselves again. Tony Gomez, Lincoln end,Spencer Baughman, Verdugo Hills tackle, and Lincoln 1 s QB, Art Arocha, moved up tothis year's first team. Lance Gross and Ron Poplawski retained their second-teamberths.

Two juniors made this season's first team, while four were named to the sec­ond squad. ~JIarshall provided Tony :Hontapert and ~;Jayne Healy, lr.Jhile Franklin ldllhave Claude Doty and Hike IvIasterman back in grid togs next year.

Final standings in the Northern League found Franklin and Verdugo Hills tiedwith 4-1 marks, Lincoln (3-1-1)" Eagle Rock (2-2-1), ~1arshall (1-4), and Belmont(0-5). Franklin outscored Verdugo in regular season play, 102 to 95 points. Frank­lin lost its quarter-final game to Reseda, 15-0 in the City Playoffs.

The Huntington Park Spartans, jugernauts of~Eastern League football forthe past two years, placed six players on the first all-league team including"player of the year" larry Bryan, as members of the Helms Hall Board of HighSchool Athletics met at Helms Hall to make their annual prep grid selections.

The Spartans, who ran up 175 points in league play this year -- an averageof 35 points per game - also put four players on the second team for a grandtotal of 10 players on the two honor squads. Three H.P. backs -- John Ives,Craig Fertig ~~d Bryan -- made the first team, with right half Tony Boschettibeing placed on the second team. Tony is one of two Huntington Park juniors tomake the 1959 selections.

Coach Ray Vernoy's star left halfback scored 54 points for the year, althoughinjured and out of action for two ball games. He was outstanding on both offenseand defense, being considered among the City's top running backs for 1959.

Four players are back from last year's league teams. Both Bryan and team­mate Arlie nSkip ll Husbands, were first team selections in '58, while Craig Fertigvias a second team selection last fall. Curtis Holt, '~;Jilson center, retained hissecond club position.

Two juniors are on this year's Eastern League selections. Roosevelt's fineguard, Richard llJiyagawa, and HP's John ryes will both be back for another gridseason in 1960. Five lower classmen dot the second team. Ray Chavez, Rooseveltend, and four backs -- Frank Alderette (~Jilson), John Neidhardt (Bell), TonyBoschetti (H. P.) and :di1son 1 s l·\fillie Ybarra. Ybarra is only a sophomore.

Eastern League standings were as follows: Huntington Park (5-0), Roosevelt(3-1-1), South Gate (3-1-1), "VJilson (2-3) J Garfield (0-4-1), and Bell (0-4-1).Huntington Park had only 21 points scored against it in league play.

Roy Jae' s thundering varsity from Reseda High, l'linners of the ~·fest ValleyLeague championship for 1959 \-lith a perfect 4-0 record, placed nine players onboth the first and second all-league teams, as Helms All-Southern California Boardof Athletics members met at Helms Hall to .make their annual All-Los Angeles CityLeague selections.. Hal Bedsole, 6'5", 2l5-pound senior quarterback was named asunanimous "player of the year" choice.

Described by his coach Roy Jae, "as the greatest player on earthll, Bedsoleaveraged 10 yards per carry (725 yards on 72 carries) and passed for 462 yardsand four touchdowns (33 completions of 75 thrown) during the season. He scored115 points during the year.

Just two players are back from last year's All-Valley League Team. Both fromReseda High, they are fullback Steve Ogden and tackle John ~'falker, who Coach Jaedescribes "as the finest pursuing lineman I've seen in high school."

Rick ShieldS, Canoga Parkts fine fullback, was named to a first team berth~

as was Bob Parks of Birmingham and Bob Raudman of Monroe. All backs chosen on thefirst team are seniors, with Thomas Lupo of Birmingham, a second team selection,being the only junior. Seven lower classmen were chosen among linemen on the twoteams, four on the first and three on the second.

The ~vest Valley League ""-found up with Reseda on top (4-0), followed by VanNuys (3-1), San Fernando (2-2), North Hollyt'lood (1-3), and Grant (0-4). Resedaamassed 120 points in four league engagements, an average of 30 points a tussle.

Hal Bedsole will receive his Helms medal award, for having been named WestValley player of the year, at the 23rd annual Football Awards Program to be heldat Helms Hall on Saturday morning, January 16th at 10:30 am. Hollywood High School's top quarterback Charles Steel, who directed CoachLou Birnbaum's varsity to a perfect 5-0 season in the tough '\,iestern League, wasnamed league player of the year "'-'Then members of All-Southern California Board ofAthletics met at Helms Hall to select players for all-star honors. Steel, who isdescribed by his coach as "a player with no weaknesses,u is a 6 13, 190-poundtriple threater, who was also a fine defensive player. He was named to the secondleague team in 1958.

The Sheiks placed four men on this year's first team, all of whom are seniors.End Dick Newber~, tackle Boris Tabakoff and backs Chuck Steel and Art Gerst werethe players named. Holl~vood also placed three team members on the second team.Guard l~Jayne Zimmerman, Tackle Erik l'Ihitaker and back Jon Kinsey made the numbertl"10 team, the latter two players being junio~s.

Only two lower classmen made the first team, while four made the second. DickCrotsley, i,rIlestchester end, and David Brown, University guard, are the players whowill be back for another crack at league honors next year. Along with Hollywood's~fuitaker and Kinsey, Bill Burns, center from University and Hamilton's Rod Lip­scomb are juniors.

Chuck Steel, co-captain of Hollywood's championship 1959 team, scored 41points during the season and was his teams top punter, tackler and pass defender.The Sheiks established an 8-1 record, losing the Huntington Park, 46-20, in thequarter finals of the City Championships. Final standings in the Hestern Leaguefor 1959 found Hollywood on top with a 5-0 mark, followed by '~Jestchester (3-2),Venice (3-2), University (3-2), Hamilton (1-4) and Fairfax (0-5).

Charles Steel, unanimous player of the year selection in the ~Jestern League,will be presented his player of the year medal award at the 23rd annual All-South­ern California Board of Football Atrfards Program to be held at Helms Hall on Sat­urday, Janua~ 16th at 10:30 am. A1I-C.I.F. and All-City players will also bepresented with their awards at this time.

Three East-Valley League schools placed three players each on this yearsfirst All-East Valley League team as selected by the Helms All-Southern CaliforniaBoard of Athletics. Board members met to make their annual selections at HelmsHall last week, selecting Van Nuys' top lineman and center Tom Garner as tlplayerof the year. 1I The three schools to share 1959 honors on the All-East Valley teamare North Hollywood, Van nuys and c..h.ampion Polytechnic.

Center Tom Garner, off Hinston Tucker's Van Nuys squad, was equally sharp onoffense and defense and was a near-lll1animous selection by league coaches as line­man of the year. Garner, at 5 111" and 190 pounds was among the toughest linemenin the city ranks for 1959.

There were no repeaters from Van Nuys, San Fernando or North Hollytvood on thisyear's team. Several boys now playing in the ~'Jest Valley League were on last year'sAll-Valley League team, however.

Four juniors were named on both the first and second teams, with Polytechnic,Grant and North Hollywood placing two players each among the lower classmen. VanNuys also placed one junior on the second team, Jim Knapp.

Polytechnic, winner of the East-Valley championship, finished the league season'tdth a 4-0 mark and going into the playoffs edged Van Nuys on first dovms, althoughthe final score stood 6-6. In the semi-finals, Poly lost to Huntington Park, East­ern League Champion, 32-7.

Here's how the league stood at the conclussion of 1959 firing: Polytechnic(4-0), Van Nuys (3-1), San Fernando (2-2), North Hollywood (1-3), and Grant (0-4).

For having been narned East Valley's top player for the 1959 season, Tom Garnerwill receive the Helms player of the year medal award at the 23rd annual All-South­ern California Board of Football Awards Program to be held at Helms Hall on Sat­urday morning, January 16th at 10:30 a.m.

Paul Huebner's Banning Pilots, which won the Marine League football titleagain in 1959 with a perfect 4-0 record, placed five players on this year's all­league team when member s of the HeJms Hall Board of High School Athletics met atHelms Hall to make their annual grid selections. The players from Banning namedto the first team are all seniors, while three additional seniors were named tothe second squad.

Two of Banning's players -- tackle Ray Avila and fullback Richard lvIcMahon -­named to this year's first team are repeaters from last year. Avila was a firstteam choice in '58, while 1\.1clvIahon was on the second team. Other players to re­peat from 1958 are Henry ota (Gardena), Bob Duncan (Banning) and Don Vaughn ofSan Pedro. Both Ota and Duncan were second team selections in 1958, "'Thile Vaughn,also a 158 second-teamer, moved up to the first team.

Banning kept its IVlarine League supremecy alive in 1959, moving through theleague season undefeated, only to drop a 25-19 decission to Fremont in the quarter­finals of the City Playoffs. Fremont was then defeated in the semis, 14-6 byReseda, 1.rJest Valley Champions.

Each member of this year's 1'Iarine League first team is a senior, with onlytwo players on the second team returning next year. Charles Nester, Narbonneend and Gardena center, Sheldon Keith, are juniors. The final standings of theMarine League found Banning on top (4-'0), with San Pedro (3-1), Narbonne (2-2),Gardena (1-3) and Jordan (0-4) following the leader. Banning scored 131 pointsin four league games to far outdistance the other league members in scoring.

On January 16th, Teruo Yamamoto will presented his Marine League Player of theYear award at the 23rd annual All-Southern California Board of Football Awards Pro­gram. to be held at Helms Hall; All-Southern California and Los Angeles City HighSchool football players 'Ifill join noted grid personalities for the annual affair.
