To what extent can an authentic identity be constructed?
“Most people are other people. Their thoughts are someone else’s opinions, their lives a mimicry, their passions a quotation.” - Oscar Wilde
It is hard not to judge someone, through the clothes that they wear along with the way that they act. To see someone else’s authentic identity can be challenging. Through persons clothes or their actions it is easy to judge them at first sight, you may see them as a professionally well dressed and articulate person, in fact they could be the complete opposite when it comes to a different situation they are in, or the people they are around.
“All of us take pride and pleasure in the fact that we are unique, but I’m afraid that when all is said and done the police are right: it all comes down to fingerprints.” - David Sedaris
When
you are sat at home, you
assume different identity particulary if
you are alone. I feel as if the identity at home,
when you are alone to be the most authentic of them
all. There is no one around you to judge how you are
acting or what you look like. There is no pressure to act
one way or another. However that identity is never seen by
anyone but you so how can
others know that this is your
authentic identity. For what
they see in the work place
or when you are out it is
an authentic identity
in their eyes.
“I believe that true identity is found . . . in creative activity springing from within. It is found, paradoxically, when one loses oneself. Woman can best refind herself in some kind of creative activity of her own.” - Anne Morrow Lindbergh
An authentic identity can be extremely personal to the individual. It can be a personal crisis when you don’t know ‘who’ you are. Finding ‘who’ you are can be a very difficult and lasting task.
“Perhaps it’s impossible to wear an identitywithout becoming what you pretend to be.” - Orson Scott Card
One single person will be made of multiple identities, this would make finding an ‘authentic’ identity difficult, How do you chose one from another as the one that you would choose to define yourself as? I don’t think that it is possible, I believe that a person is a mix of many different identities.
“That ain’t me, that ain’t my face. It wasn’t even me when I was trying to be that face. I wasn’t even really me them; I was just being the way I looked, the way people wanted.” - Ken Kesey
The group of people you are around could influence the identity that you portray; maybe to fit in as part of the group you change your identity to match theirs.
“Or might the soul clone itself, create a perfect imitation of something yet to be defined? In this way, can a reflection be altered?” — Ellen Hopkins
How you see yourself is reflected in different ways, I feel that one of the most obvious ones is being the clothes that you wear. If you are going to work, you are going to dress in an appropriate and professtional manner. Whereas if you are going out socially out you would reflect your identity in a different manner.
“Don’t let the noise of others’ opinions drown out your own inner voice.”- Steve Jobs
“How do you know you are who you are? How do you know you’re not simply a clone of who you think you are?” - Jarod Kintz
