Hello everyone and belated New Year to you all.

The lack of rugby throughout the year and the first part of this year has put us in limbo and waiting for a glimpse of hope on the 22nd of February when Boris will make a statement.

You may think about what has been going on but you can rest assured there has been quite a lot behind the scenes. The arrival of new training equipment for junior and mini's with club badge on are in the storerooms waiting to be hit. The changing rooms downstairs have been repainted and pimped up with all the work carried out by the senior players and all materials paid for by them as well. Plans have been drawn up for our new exciting project for a purpose-built training ground which will give us more facilities and pitches to increase rugby in the City of Sunderland. (plans will be displayed soon)

The news from Ashbrooke Sports club is that they have a new membership structure and reduced the prices and also a monthly Newsletter which will en-lighten you about what the membership goes towards. Please pay your mem-bership which is due in April. This is the only revenue the club will have coming in and will keep it open.

There is nothing from the RFU to report to yourselves and will keep you in-formed as soon as news comes in.

On a personal note, I hope you and your families are all safe and well and look-ing forward to seeing you all at the club for a drink.

Thanks

Paul Geehan

In honour of the discovery of Alfred Hudson’s jersey which is almost around

140 years old we at Sunderland RFC with Sportsworld have produced a jersey

in homage to the kit which is said to be the oldest known full kit in existence.

There has been recent media coverage of the story including the Sunderland

Echo and Look North.

The Jerseys are available in Mens, Ladies and Children’s

sizes for a limited period of time due to production rea-

sons. Deadline for orders is 01/03/2021.

A percentage of each purchase will go towards the Ryhope

Road Project.

To get hold of one for yourself or family members visit the

clubstore where you will find the Jersey’s as well as other club apparel

In recent weeks Sunderland RFC Senior

Coach John Gregson appeared on the

BBC gameshow pointless with a friend of

his. What many could say he annoyingly

performed well and got the all important

pointless answer. He also had a moment

to name drop our club on national televi-

sion. Congratulations John.

With uncertainty in recent times Ashbrooke Sports club have been able to de-

lay the payment of Membership fees for as long as possible . The Club’s trus-

tees have agreed to reduce the cost of memberships which is a positive note in

this time. The club relies on the memberships to fund running costs and now

they are needed most. Please support our club in this time.

The senior players recently funded the com-

mission of this artwork to go up in the club

when we return to some kind of normality. To

get hold of your own get in touch and email

[email protected].

This is just one of the projects the senior play-

ers have been working on, including the refur-

bishment of the downstairs changing area

which we will unveil once complete. Keep an

eye out for future projects and if you wish to

help don’t hesitate to get in touch.

Back in November Senior player Ryan Buckley decided to run 100km within the

month to raise money for the Ryhope Road Project. In doing so raised £1,670

towards the project. Hopefully this will inspire other member and sections to

do fundraisers for the project which will benefit

everyone in the club.

The Ryhope Road Project has been an ambition of the club for some time and its purpose is to provide facilities to sup-port not only our senior men's and women's section but also our vast and ever growing youth section. The facilities will provide 2 playing pitches and a training pitch, changing rooms and parking facilities.

As a club we pride ourselves on our player pathway and take inspiration from such clubs as Exeter who have reached the pinnacle of club rugby in a short space of time through their own player pathway. The success and progression of our 1xv in recent seasons has been fantastic and it is no coin-cidence that this has been a product of a successful player pathway in re-cent years. To achieve our goals developing Ryhope Road is crucial.

There has been notable successes of our youth system over the years with James Lofthouse going on to achieve national honours in a side most notably containing Jonny Wilkinson. The returning James Kyle went on to play at a higher level, alongside brother Dan. The Boatman brothers Jonny and Danny both went on to have a successful playing career at West Hartlepool. Former Colts captain Jamie Sword trained with Newcastle Falcons last summer and most recently Joe Duffy earned a contract at Championship club Richmond RFC after learning his trade at Sunderland RFC, The Flames have also have seen successful progression with Dannah Ryan-Munden joining the Mowden Sharks 1st team squad.

We at Sunderland take so much pride in the success and development of all of our players and this project is vital to provide the facilities in order to continue these successes.

To help us with this development we have set up the below crowd-funder to help with the financial backing required to develop the facility which would provide our club with the platform to succeed for many years to come. https://www.gofundme.com/f/sunderland-rfc-academy-amp-training-base-ryhope-rd?
