Hello Elmer and Wilbur Class! We hope that you had a lovely Easter holiday and had lots of fun at home with your family. We had fun at home with our families, making the most of the lovely sunshine when it was out. Happy belated birthday to Anureet and Heidi who both celebrated their birthdays during the break. We hope that you both had a lovely day. We also wanted to say well done to Charlie Richards who made a fabulous ‘Superworm’ with his dad out of play dough! Over the next few weeks we are going to be thinking about animals. This week we are thinking all about pets.

Before starting to read the book, have a look at the instructions on the inside cover and follow what it suggests to do. These are good ideas to encourage discussion about the front cover and to help your child make predictions about the story.

As an introduction to this week’s theme of pets, we would like you to sort the animals on the next slide into two lists.
We would like you to look at the pictures and name the animals that you can see.
Then we would like you to think about each animal and decide which would make a good pet and which ones would definitely not make a good pet!

Good Pet Bad Pet
Say each word to yourself before you write it. Try to identify each letter sound that you can hear. Use your fingers as sound buttons to count how many sounds you can hear in each word. Write the words using your letter sounds.

Remember when writing your lists that each word needs to be written underneath the one before.E.G apples

Which animals would make good pets?

Challenge Activity.
Can you write sentences to say why one of the animals would make a good pet and why one of the animals would make a bad pet?
For example……
A cat is a good pet. It is soft.
An elephant is a bad pet. It is too big.
Here are some suggested activities that will help with fine motor skills and strengthen the muscles needed to improve handwriting.
Try……
• Writing numbers on strips of card and then the children have to peg the correct number of pegs onto each strip.
• Use cotton buds to dab paint along a pattern drawn on paper. Make sure you are holding the cotton bud between two fingers in a pincer grip. You could dab along a zig zag pattern, spirals, circles, mmmmmm or uuuuuuu patterns.
• Cut along a drawn pattern – zig zags, mmmmm, uuuuuu spirals.• Thread wheetos onto string or plastic straws.• Peg pairs of socks onto a make shift washing line indoors – got to match the
pairs first!
