  • Harford County EducationFoundation and theirsponsors partnered toimprove the digitalinequity for low-incomestudents across HarfordCounty and provide digitalaccess at home.

In December, theFoundation, and theirsponsors presented 10 ofthe 40 laptops they areproviding to MagnoliaMiddle School as well asthe digital lending hubsthey are gifting to threeadditional schools.

Harford CountyEducation Foundationreceived the 40 laptopsfrom a local IT recyclingcompany, HiTECHAssets, who turns data destruction and server disposal into a secure, sustainable process.

“We’re proud to have been able to obtain Dell laptops and outfit them at a significantly discounted rate,” shared Keith Phoebus, Business Development Manager at HiTECH Assets.“This will allow students in Harford County access to technology that will help thembecome more successful in school.”

For many low-income students, having Internet or owning a tablet or laptop is simply not a reality. As more homework assignments require web access, having the digital tools athome is important in preventing students from falling behind their peers.

“Technology is such an integrated part of our society, that students who do not have access can be at a disadvantage academically, socially, and financially,” said Debora Gavin Merlock, President at the Harford County Education Foundation. “We are incrediblyhonored to partner with our sponsors and increase the technological impact we have onour students.”

Harford County Education Foundation works with the local community to bring criticalresources to help students succeed in their academic and personal goals through middleand high school leadership programs, college and career mentoring, scholarships, freeschools supplies for low-income students, and grants.

Through Harford County Education Foundation’s Tech Tools initiative, the 32% of HarfordCounty Public School students who reside in low-income households will have improvedaccess to quality learning experiences.

Harford County Education Foundation and this initiative is sponsored by The Albert P. Close Foundation, Bravura Information Technology Systems, HiTECH Assets, OakContracting LLC, The Women’s Giving Circle of Harford County, the Dart Foundation, and Chesapeake Environmental Management.

  • At this time of year, parents and students begin taking a forward look at their summerplans. These plans often include vacations, summer camp, summer jobs, and family fun, but it is also important that students maintain a routine that avoids the dreadedsummer slide. While there is no magical solution to eliminating loss of learning duringthe summer, here are a few suggestions to keep your students on track and help them to prepare for the upcoming school year as they enjoy their summer break:

    1. Join the Harford County Public Library Summer Reading Program. Yourstudents can earn prizes and help their school compete for the covetedreading trophy. While reading at least three books this summer, they cancritique them and make recommendations to a family member or friend.Remind them to turn in their forms to compete with other schools!

    2. Plan learning experiences. Visit a museum, travel to a new city, or go to a sporting event. Encourage your students to help with the planning by researching places to visit, checking out restaurants, and creating anitinerary. If they are old enough, provide a budget and allow them to help find deals on excursions, hotels, food, flights, etc. They’ll be reading, doing math, and conducting research without even knowing it!

    3. Volunteer. Students can select an organization and call or write to themabout volunteering. Potential places include churches, animal shelters, hospitals, homeless shelters, or community businesses. This will helpbuild research skills as well as speaking and listening skills.

    4. Journal. Students can document the summer by journaling or keeping a scrap book. For example, on Day 1, students can write a journal entryabout the first day of summer using as many vivid adjectives as possibleor by creating tongue twisters (alliterative words and phrases). At the endof the summer, encourage them to share a few entries with the family. What a way to build up those writing skills AND presentation skills!

    5. Stay active. Carve out time each day for activities such as walking, running, bicycling, sports, or swimming. Students can add these activitiesto their journals.

    6. Learn/teach a new skill. Here’s one idea: Students can go to the publiclibrary and check out a sign language book or enroll in a sign languageclass. Allow them to teach you or a family member a few new words eachweek of the summer. They can also assess/grade you on your perform-ance and add this experience to their summer journal. Teaching andlearning is a winning combination!

With these tips and many more, we can help avoid learning loss and save the summerslide for the amusement parks, pools, playgrounds, and baseball diamonds.

    Enjoy the summer!

Have you ever spent a hotafternoon playing ball withyour friends or runningaround the park with yourdog? Bet you were prettysweaty and thirsty when youfinished playing — maybeeven thirsty enough to guzzle an entire gallon ofwater. That thirst was a signof dehydration. Dehydrationmeans that your body is losingmore fluids than it takes in— and that’s not good! Don’t depend onyour thirst to tell you whether or not yourbody needs a refill. Make sure you drinkwater a few hours before gearing up forphysical activities, and keep drinking afteryou’re done — be smart and stay hydrated!

Drinking water before, during, and afterphysical activity is one way to keep yourbody’s air conditioner working. Keep thesetips in mind to help your body stay cool:

    • Top off your tank a few hours beforeyou hit the court, the field, or your ownbackyard by drinking about two cups ofcold water.

    • Keep a water bottle handy to guzzle during water breaks, halftime, or timeouts. Try to drink about 10 ounces —that’s about 10 large gulps from yourwater bottle — every 15-20 minutes.

    • Even after the game ends, the chuggingshouldn’t — the more you sweat, themore water you need. Drink bottledwater, water flavored with lemon or limejuice, or water right from your own sink.

    • Eating fruit and other cool snacks isanother way to keep your body cool!

Pack peaches, oranges, watermelon, andgrapes in your cooler — they taste greatand re-hydrate!

    • Play outside during cooler parts of theday — early morning or early evening. The day is usually hottest between 10a.m. and 4 p.m., so find a shady bikepath to ride or skate on, plan someindoor activities, take a dip in the pool,or play games under the sprinkler.

    • Dress cool. Wear clothing that is loosefitting and lightly colored — preferablymade of cotton or a sweat-wicking material (designed to pull sweat awayfrom your skin). Stay away from dark-colored clothing like black and darkblue — they soak up sunlight and heat.

    • Stay away from drinks that have caf-feine, lots of sugar, or carbonation inthem — like soda or tea.

    • Most importantly, listen to your body. If you feel weak, dizzy, or thirsty, take a break in the shade, grab your waterbottle, and tell a grown-up.

Now that you know how to beat the heat —get out there, stay active, and keep cool!
