Coming together to make an impact on the world!

“In our 20 year history, we have more wish requests today than ever before. Together We Can Do Anything.

When I hit the road visiting Heery Offices, I without fail hear three requests from our people. The first request is to get rid of the Blackberrys, which I am glad to say we have accomplished. The second request is to bring back Heery University, which we do plan on doing at some point in the next year. The last request is to bring back Heery News.

You asked for it and you got it. Heery News is back in the new digital format you are viewing. We aim to provide you with a mix of news that includes: company updates, project wins, project news, people in the spotlight, safety tips, anniversaries, birthdays, and special events.

I must admit that when I viewed the Heery News for the first time I was genuinely excited. There was nothing in

it that I did not already know, but when you look at the stories in a consolidated format like this publication, it reminds you of all the good work we do for our clients and our community and all the great people we have working for this company. This was the proverbial “aha moment” for me and why our people longed to bring back this most important publication.

Many thanks to David Chiem for his leadership in bringing Heery News back to life. Most of all, I would like to thank each of you for being the face of this company and doing the great work you do which enables us to publish this Heery periodical.

The new courthouse design uses contemporary planning standards to improve operations, security, and circulation by separating populations within the building through separate circulation systems. In addition to “rightsizing” the functional spaces to meet today’s standards, the design adds layers of circulation for secure access and movement within the building, replaces 20 existing courtrooms, and provides administrative departments critical to the operations of the courts. The multi-phased delivery also includes renovation and infill of the 40,000SF Mission Building, an existing courts administration facility located adjacent to the site. The new facility is located across the street from the existing County campus, forming an extension to the campus fabric and defining a eight-story edge to a lively and well-used civic plaza at the center of the jail, administration, and Mission building. Underground tunnel extensions for staff and inmate populations will also be included. Construction and move management phasing will occur as the project progresses. The existing courthouse building will be demolished once the new facility is operational. The project is tracking LEED Gold and incorporates sustainable features including rainwater harvesting, recycled materials, high efficiency mechanical system, high performance glazing, and a rain garden.

The new 161,000SF County Courthouse replaces a 117,000SF facility that has served the County’s Justice functions for over 50 years but is not conducive to meeting current and future standards for safe, secure and efficient court operations.

SNOHOMISH COUNTY REPLACEMENT COURTHOUSE

Veritiv’s office design creates an opportunity for the company to communicate its new vision and brand to its customers and employees by creating a unique work environment for both executives and top management. The client desired a traditional office arrangement providing privacy for executives. This is supported by alternative work venues that punctuate the space providing opportunities for executives and staff to engage one another in more open, less formal settings. The materials used in the design strike a balance between the company’s history and its future. Warm colors and rich woods reflect the stability and longevity of the parent corporate entities while glass walls, modern lighting and an angular geometry speak to Veritiv’s new direction. The project includes a reception area, executive board room, café, huddle rooms, phone rooms, meeting rooms, alternative work venues, offices and workstations for Veritiv’s Finance, Operations, IT, and Human Resources divisions.

Poudre Valley Hospital, in northern Colorado, is the region’s leading cancer care center. Given the increase of patients and cancer awareness, the University of Colorado Health System needed to take action to expand the Cancer Center. Initially, UCH wanted to build an entirely new facility. Heery Design was able to demonstrate to UCH that renovation and expansion to the existing facility could provide significant cost advantages without disrupting patient care.

To accomplish this, the $10.7 million, 44,390SF project was built in three phases to allow the cancer center to remain operational throughout construction. The first phase consisted of a 4,400SF renovation of the existing radiation oncology suite, including a second linear accelerator and CT simulation scanner. The second phase included construction of a 32,150SF, two-story addition and interior renovation highlighted by a new lobby and entrance, along with a Main Street pedestrian corridor that links to the existing lobby, oncology departments in the existing wing, and an exterior healing garden. The final phase consisted of a 7,840SF renovation in the existing wing which included a nutritional center, physical rehabilitation, alternative medicine therapies and a flexible conference center.

Poudre Valley Hospital and Heery’s goal was to create a warm and welcoming place for cancer patients. Poudre Valley Hospital continues to be the region’s leading cancer treatment facility having a huge impact on its communities.

All eyes are on the development of the Braves new stadium, SunTrust Park. Over the next four weeks, Heery will working round the clock with the Atlanta Braves design and construction team to put a bow on the Final GMP (FGMP) for the Braves’ new ballpark. Construction is in full swing with four tower cranes puncturing the Cobb County Skyline at I-75. With a workforce of over 225 men and women and growing, and over 75% of contracts awarded, the site is a hornet’s nest of activity.

The new park is designed with the fans in mind. With 41,500 seats, the intimate configuration maximizes sightlines and elevations, placing a higher percentage of seats closer to the field than any other ballpark in Major League Baseball.

H-JAIAPM Support ServicesLast March, we were officially notified by the City of Atlanta that the PB/HJ Russell/Heery team was selected to serve as the PM for the multi-billion dollar CIP program at Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport. This is a 15-year contract that should generate revenue for virtually all of the Heery services. While we are the overall PM for the CIP Program, significant PM revenues will be generated by this contract. Additional revenue could be gained by all A/E groups due to scoping studies, pre-designs and conceptual/planning solutions. They anticipate a very robust capital program starting with over $2 Billion in replacement parking decks, new cargo facilities, terminal and concourse upgrades, end-around runways and miscellaneous facility repairs and upgrades. The contract has been approved by the Atlanta City Council Transportation Committee and we expect a signed contract in early May.

STATE DEPARTMENTModernization of the Harry S. Truman BuildingHeery Washington D.C. has been selected to provide construction management services for Phase 1C of the renovation of The Harry S. Truman Building. This Building serves as the State Department Headquarters and consists of 2,516,000SF, of which this project is a part. The work will include hazardous material abatement, general demolition, exterior wall hardening, blast window, progressive collapse mitigation, an upgrade of all mechanical, electrical, plumbing, communication, fire protection circulation and security systems and will upgrade all core architectural finishes and provide all new tenant functional spaces. The Heery team will provide leadership and management of the construction team over the next 3 years and until completion of this phase of the work. Executing this level of renovation while the majority of the facility is occupied without causing interruption to the critical and important operations of the State Department will provide daily challenges and keep our people razor sharp. Heery’s performance and reputation allowed us to win the trust of GSA and the State Department and win this prestigious assignment.

safety tips! zero harm

Callie came to Heery International on March 29th to share her story.

Eleven-year-old Callie has battled congenital anomalies all her life. In her spare time, Callie enjoys many of the things that other kids her age love to do. However, because of her illness, she has to take additional precautionary measures to ensure

her safety. Callie suffers from visual-spacial challenges, many cardiac problems and can experience multiple seizures per day. Make-A-Wish was able to grant Callie’s wish… her new best friend and constant companion, “Doodle Dandy.” In addition to being an adorable pet, he calms her down and helps keep her safe.

Heery is a strong proponent of giving back to the communities in which we live and work, and our employees are active and involved in their local communities.

HEERY FROM THE HEART COMMUNITY SERVICES

We have all probably used the term “Same Old, Same Old”- used to say that a situation or someone’s behavior remains the same, especially when it is boring or annoying. Such as when a friend asks you, “so how is work going?” you answer “same old, same old.”

Complacency is perhaps one of the biggest problems we face in completing our day to day tasks. We are “used” to things being a certain way each time and unless the obvious comes right out and hits us . . . we can be oblivious to it all, “same old, same old.” This state of mind can affect many things such as productivity, quality and safety.

There is much danger in going into “autopilot” when working on the job. All too often we don’t realize how complacent we are until we have a near miss or close call. Those events tend to jump start our hearts and focus our attention… at least for a little while, on the task at hand.

If you find yourself becoming complacent, stop and think about what you are trying to accomplish. Re-identify the hazards around you and take the appropriate steps to avoid an incident. We don’t need the “same old, same old” to negatively affect the outcome of our work.

Written by Isidoro Martin, Atlanta Office.

Stop Hunger Now is an organization that conducts meal packaging events with help from volunteers. The event was not only a fun way for Raleigh employees to give back to their community but it also served as a platform to educate people about hunger, what they can do about it, and to inspire them to take further action. In two hours the Heery Raleigh team, along with other volunteers, packaged more than 5,000 meals.

Tuesday, March 10th, Heery Raleigh participated in a “Stop Hunger Now” community service project.

Congratulations to our Heery Iowa City folks who participated in the design, test and build of their CANstruction entry, “AmeriCAN Gothic.” It was a very creative entry, based on Grant Wood’s classic painting. Visitors to the venue are encouraged to get behind the cutouts and create their own modern take of the historical image. They did a great job and won the “People’s Choice Winner” and the “Best Meal Winner.” The true winners are the families and individuals this food will feed through the food banks.

A special thanks goes out to Jane Van Woert who organized this year’s CANstruction event for Heery. This is their sixth year in row for this event. Kudos to the participants: Josh Arguello, Aaron Fulton, Kelly Nelson, Hannah Roush, Doris Schornhorst, Jane Van Woert and Peter McDermott.

This year’s event collected 12,300 lbs of food for the Hawkeye Area Community Action Program, Inc. (HACAP) Food Reservoir!

We have a Facebook page along with LinkedIn and Twitter accounts. We post a few times a week and hope to start doing more as you become more aware of the

possibilities of getting the Heery name out there.

Our Twitter handle is @HeeryIntl. Tweets are restricted to 140 characters, but visuals take away about 25 of those characters. It takes some creativity to get the word/visuals out and stay within guidelines.

Our LinkedIn page can be found by searching on “Heery.” LinkedIn allows around 700 characters, but the images are small.

We prefer Facebook. The images are large and we’re not limited to a specific character count. Images are vivid and the text scrolls. We can put larger stories in there than are possible on other media outlets.
