Cornucopia: Still Lifes from the CollectionThrough August 21

Long Island BiennialSeptember 3 – December 4

E X H I B I T I O N SMaster of IllusionThe Magical Art of Gary ErbeThrough August 28Master of Illusion traces the artist’s career from his early trompe l’oeilworks to more recent paintings that combine trompe l’oeil realism withmodernist strategies focused on the dynamics of composition, form, andstructure. Inspired by a popular American culture and history, his workis at once aesthetically complex and profoundly engaging. AlthoughErbe is recognized both nationally and internationally,Master of Illusionmarks his first Long Island exhibition, accompanied by a full-colorcatalogue.

Master of Illusion is sponsored in part byAndrea B. and Peter D. Klein, Pien andHans Bosch, and Fern and Hersh Cohen.

Cornucopia: Still Lifes from the CollectionThrough August 21Still life painting celebrates the abundance, beauty, and diversity of thenatural world. This exhibition, featuring works from the Museum’sPermanent Collection, traces the development of still life painting fromlate 19th-century naturalism through the formalist concerns of early20th-century modernism to photorealism in the 1970s. Works byCarducius Plantagenet Ream, William Merritt Chase, Ilya Bolotowsky,Jan Matulka, Helen Torr, Joseph Stella, David Burliuk, Nicolai Cikovsky,Milton Avery, and Robert Kipniss are included.

Synapses: Threads for ThoughtOngoingSynapses: Threads for Thought presents works from the Museum’scollection as a meandering thread of diverse connections. Paintings,

Joseph Stella, Water Lily, c. 1944 [detail]. Gift of the Baker/Pisano Collection. (On view in Cornucopia)

Reynolds Beal, Curacao, 1921 [detail]. Gift of Mr. and Mrs. Sidney Bressler in memory of Ronald G. Pisano.(On view in Synapses)

prints, and photographs executed in a range of styles and subjects arearranged so that each work links to those that precede and follow it,but indiffering ways. The revealed formal and conceptual associations enlargethe viewer’s interpretation and highlight the interconnectedness of visualexperience. With works ranging from a late 16th-century painting of theAnnunciation and George Grosz’s Eclipse of the Sun to abstractions byArthur Dove and photographs by Larry Fink, this exhibition embraces thebreadth of the Museum’s collection.

Long Island BiennialOpens September 3Established in 2010, the Long Island Bien-nial is a juried exhibition featuring artists ofSuffolk and Nassau Counties. Looking Out, Looking In: Windows in ArtOpens September 3Windows depicted in art serve various practical and metaphoricalfunctions. Whether casting light that illuminates a scene or providingformal structure to a composition, windows signify a boundary betweenprivate and public spaces. Allowing or preventing the viewer visualaccess, windows mediate between interior and exterior, providingconnections or maintaining separation. Drawn from the Museum’sPermanent Collection, Looking Out, Looking In explores the use ofwindows in paintings and photographs of the 19th and 20th centuriesby artists such as Berenice Abbott, Don Eddy, Fairfield Porter,Emilio Sanchez, John Sloan, and Helen Miranda Wilson.

Norman Rockwell and FriendsAmerican Illustrations from the Mort Künstler CollectionOpens December 10Norman Rockwell and Friends: American Illustrations from the MortKünstler Collection celebrates the Golden Age of American Illustrationin works by Edwin Austin Abbey, Howard Chandler Christy, DeanCornwell, Charles Dana Gibson, Winslow Homer, J.C. Leyendecker,Maxfield Parrish, Howard Pyle, Norman Rockwell, N.C. Wyeth, andothers. In the late 19th and early 20th centuries, these artists createdcountless illustrations for journals and books that were avidly read byan increasingly literate American public, assuming a culturalsignificance equivalent to that of television and digital technology today.Depicting sentimental themes or dramatic adventures, the country’sillustrators envisioned the aspirations of the nation and gave visualexpression to the American character.

Mort Künstler: The New NationOpens December 10Featuring the artist’s most recent work, Mort Künstler: The New Nationtraces the dramatic story of the birth of the United States, from settle-ment through the Revolutionary War, to the establishment of ourdemocracy and the inauguration of George Washington as the nation’sfirst president. Characterized by factual accuracy and emotionaldepth, Künstler’s paintings vividly bring to life scenes from America’siconic past.

Norman Rockwell and Friends and The New Nation are sponsored in part bythe Rapaport Shallat Foundation, Frank Lourenso & Gary Stevens - MorganStanley Wealth Management, and The Henry Luce Foundation, Director’sDiscretionary Grant Program at the request of Thomas L. Pulling.
