Solemnity of All Saints: November 1, 2015
All you holy men and women, pray for us.
Heaven’s Door, by Tim Steward
My Dear Parishioners, How wonderful that All Saints has fallen this year on a Sunday, and that to our 10:00 am Mass we welcome members of the Brith Shalom Synagogue in Houston. It is a day for the Family of God to assemble and rejoice in all of those holy men and women that have gone before us from our Jewish and Catholic traditions. The church which I was baptized in, received my first Holy Communion, and was ordained a priest—St. Patrick’s in Wellington, Shropshire—is still very precious to me. It was the first time I witnessed the community in prayer during the Mass, and individuals before and after Mass praying. It was there that I came to realize that something greater and more mysterious was at work. A beautiful stained-glass window of St. Vincent De Paul illuminated the altar of sacrifice. It depicted a Saint of God surrounded by the most vulnerable in our society, the children. Perhaps from that, I became conscious of the importance of innocence, vulnerability, and child-like virtues. Looking back on the decades of years, I ponder the gifts and qualities of children. The gift of wonder comes to mind, the beauty of a weed or insect, so easily seen by children and lost as years pass by. On this All Saints, I hope that we realize that we are all created by God, and are still children at heart . May we gain the wonder and joy of a child, secure in the care of one that gives us life; one who longs for us to become the best that we can be, in service of God and of others, especially those in need. May we discover that the heart of God is always greater than our little hearts and minds, inviting us to “act justly, to love tenderly, and walk humbly with your God,” Micah 8:8. With every good wish, Fr. Phil

The Communion of Saints
“How beautiful it is to sustain one another in the wonderful adventure of the faith!” the Pope exclaimed. “I say this because the tendency to
close oneself in private has influenced even the religious sphere, thus many times it is hard to seek spiritual help from those
who share with us the Christian experience.” Pope Francis told the crowd that within the communion of saints exists
a great family where each one helps and sustains the other. A final aspect of the communion of saints, he continued, is the spiritual bond that exists between those who continue their pilgrimage on earth
and those who have passed the threshold of death into eternity. “All who are baptized down here on earth, the souls of Purgatory and all
the blessed already in Paradise form one big Family,” the Holy Father said. “This communion between heaven and earth is realized especially through the intercessory prayer,” he concluded, calling it the “highest
form of solidarity,” as well as the foundation of the liturgical celebrations of All Saints and All Souls. -from zenit.org
