Message from the Headteacher, Caroline Barlow

Now we have come to the end of the tenure of our Head Prefect team, I would like to publicly record

our thanks for their work. Leading the student body of around 1500 students is a challenging task. All

four of our team have led the group with great skill, patience and compassion in varied roles

including public speaking, leading school council and supporting the College in numerous other tasks.

We thank them for their efforts and wish them well as they enter the next phase of their education

and hope for the success they richly deserve.

Head of Year 11, Mr Treloar, provides a thank you message to this year’s Head Prefect team:

Get Tickets Now!

Just as we did this time last year, this week we have recently been reflecting. Our annual strategic

planning day’s review our long term goals and the progress we have made towards them, setting

improvement targets for next year. Our ‘Important Goals’ are the benchmark of what we are trying to

achieve irrespective of any external performance measures or grading.

• A community culture of high aspiration and high achievement, underpinned by commitment,

collaboration and compassion.

• Innovative, challenging and personalised provision.

• Inspiring, creative and dynamic teaching and learning experiences.

• Experiences that build self-esteem, leadership and resilience.

• Students equipped to enjoy and thrive in their lives, in and beyond the College.

• A Vibramt centre for learning, attracting and retaining the best staff based on career fulfilment,

enjoyment and job satisfaction.

Part of our role on these days is to be very self-critical, to unpick where we have not yet reached our

goals and what barriers are that we still need to overcome. Setting clear targets for our continued

improvement. However an equally important aspect is also to stop and reflect on what is going well

and the aspects of Heathfield Community College that makes us very proud. This mirrors the

assemblies I gave this week about stopping to notice the wonderful things around us and not just

relying on the news/social media feeds that are filtered before us.

I have enjoyed many wonderful conversations recently with parents and fellow professionals who have

either experienced what we do or heard of our practice and our values. The feedback from our

governors was heartening as they highlighted aspects of the College that they were proud of

• A genuine sense of pride that the staff and students have in their College

• The highest expectations and belief that everyone can achieve

• Developing the whole person and citizens of the future

• A real sense of community and strength of relationships

• Life enhancing opportunities for students

• One governor simply expresses it as : “People know the College is going to do what it says it’s going

to do. You deliver!”

Whilst the world around us is presenting challenges, the best we can offer our young people is a sense

of optimism and determined commitment to our values. College should represent a safe space where

they can be free to be true to themselves, dream big and achieve high. I am reassured by all the

examples in this newsletter, the day to day experience of being in the College and the feedback that

we do and must continue to do this.

Thank you for all your support that enables us to do the best we can for our students.

“The Sussex school games were a chance to be the best of the best in the County. It was a

great experience for everyone who went and it was just amazing!!” Rufus Jones

Mr Moore who accompanied said: “Once again out students were fantastic, determined and

enthusiastic throughout the day and what a great day to be part of! I am sure it is an

experience all our students will remember and, who knows, maybe in the future we will watch

one of our students represent their country on the world stage at a major sporting event!”

The two students (a second year physicist, Marco, and a third year historian, Aisha) were both engaging

and personal about their fantastic experience studying at St John's College, Oxford. They were

highly encouraging about our students’ chances of being accepted. The physicist, Marco, interestingly

grew up on a dairy farm in Croatia and went to secondary school in a low achieving state school in

Croydon, perhaps not the stereotypical image of Oxbridge. He was adamant that Oxford is a university

that looks actively for potential as well as academic excellence. His stories about wearing gowns to

exams and the tradition of students wearing a white flower running through shades of pink to blood red

to symbolise their growing experience during exam season did surprise many of our students, however!

A taste of what university might offer to some of our students is just a part of the wider diet of

information and opportunities we continue to strive to offer in order that they find the best

possible progression for themselves after Year 11 and off into their professional, vocational and

academic futures.

Ambitious & Confident

On 19 June, a number of Year 9 and 10 students had the benefit of an

interactive presentation from two current Oxford University

undergraduates. Although the focus was very much on Heathfield

students having the ambition to aim high and believe that they have

the potential to get into one of the world's top universities, it also

touched upon university in general and in particular the culture and

expectations of Russell Group institutions.

On Thursday 21 June, the Art and Photography

students displayed their course and exam work in the

Annual Heathfield Community College Art Exhibition.

The evening was a huge success, showcasing over 200

candidates’ work from GCSE and A Level Art and

Photography.

The students had been working for between two and

three years to create their material for the show and

the department have taken great pride in exhibiting

their work. A parent had commented about how the

quality of outcomes continued to surpass previous

years, in terms of variety and originality.

The entire team are hugely proud of everything the

students have achieved and we recognise fully the

hours of work the students put into their exam and

coursework. We are so lucky to have such highly

motivated, conscientious and hardworking students in

our school and we want to thank you all for creating

such amazing work. Well done to you all!

DofE

Training Walk – Sunday 17 June 2018

The DofE group headed out to unfamiliar territory away from

Heathfield. There were 5 groups made up of our bronze award

students (Emily Hill, Emily Miller, Lily Hallam, Dana Brown,

Ria Goldsmith, Laurie Beebee, Seth Thompson, Phoebe

Bigwood, Meilusha Xiao Askaroff, Mattea Rendell, Lydia Hook,

Harvey Keely, Carys Keely, Milly Thompsett, Rachel Sparrow, Ella Donfranceso, Amelia Bowerman,

Ellie Schutze) and our silver stars (Maezie Lane, Anna Hersey- Swan, Lauren Harris, and Lydia

Smith).

As we woke up on Father’s Day to the sound of raindrops it was with dread we headed out to

Ashdown Forest for our final practice walk. Thankfully, by the time we set off, the rain had

stopped and the weather cleared to allow us a walk with beautiful views over the forest and the

South Downs.

We headed off with a solo group at the front and the remainder of the 4 groups working together to

navigate from checkpoint to checkpoint. As before, we rotated the groups so they could all have a

chance to lead, and rest!

It was a wonderfully varied walk with beech woods, open heathland, pastures and streams with a

few undulations on the way. A great final test of fitness before the expeditions in the autumn.

Thanks to the teachers in support: Ms Dalby; Mrs Savage; Mrs O’Connell, Ms Norman; Mrs Flynn (and

also to Mr Donfranceso), without whom we couldn’t run these events.

Pretty Muddy Race

8 of our Year 10 Silver DofE students – Jasmine Batson, Liv Crane, Lauren Harris, Anna Hersey-Swan,

Isla Howlett, Maezie Lane, Lydia Smith and Katie Walters took part in the Pretty Muddy 5K Race for

Life at Tilgate Park in Crawley on Sunday 24 June.

The students wanted to participate as many are running as their activity for their DofE award as

well as it being a great achievement to show their progress and also to support such a worthwhile

cause. Dressed in pink (some with tutus!) the students dedicated their run to friends and family, as

well as members of the College community.

It was a scorching day, with temperatures in their mid

20s, but the obstacles – which included muddy scramble

nets, space hoppers, climbing walls, muddy pools of

water and a giant inflatable slide into a mud pit – made

the experience much more fun than a ‘normal’ 5K run.

"I had so much fun doing the mud run and even

though I was covered in mud from head to toe, I

would love to do one again next year to help a

brilliant charity- Cancer Research" Anna Hersey-Swan

“It was such a fun and amazing experience; we got

really muddy!!” Maezie Lane

Year 8 Spelling Bee Team Are Victorious!

Our super team of Gemma Cullington, Aliesha Pooley, Victoria

Hines and Lauren Fenn competed against teams of other Year 8

students from Uckfield CTC and Uplands CC on 28 June. All

students performed impressively and every one of our Heathfield

team made it through to the ‘blind-spelling’ round. This was no

mean feat; due to the quality of spelling on display, a perfect

score of 10 out of 10 in the pre-learned spelling round was

required to progress.

Having had 120 spellings to learn, with words such as

pharmaceutical, leukocyte and oesophagus in the spelling list, to

score 10/10 shows great determination and ambition in each of

our Grand Finalists.

The ‘blind’ round is always a very challenging situation and the

tension was intense! Students had words, which they were not

prepared for, fired at them and had to spell them correctly in

front of an audience of parents, teachers and students.

After three gruelling rounds of ‘blind’ spellings, still standing

at the end of the competition, and winning the prestigious UHU

Annual Spelling Bee trophy for Heathfield CC, was Lauren Fenn.

Reclaiming the trophy was a fantastic achievement and

represented Heathfield’s second win in 3 years.

The College is very proud of all our Grand Finalists; simply to

get to this point, Gemma, Aliesha, Victoria and Lauren had to

win through 3 rounds of qualifying which proved them to be the

best spellers in the year group.

Friday the 22 of June proved to be the perfect day for the GCSE photography students to take part in

the annual Photography Trip to a sun soaked Brighton. The students travelled around the area

visiting the iconic attractions and landmarks to encapsulate the spirit, culture and atmosphere of

this vibrant seaside city. The photo shoots will then be used to develop outcomes in the forthcoming

mock exams in July.

The students proved themselves to be a credit to Heathfield Community College and several

members of the public enquired as to where the students were from as they were so impressed by

their conduct and politeness. The students thrived in this new location, being able to call on their

past experience from the course to fully utilize the environment in a creative and imaginative way.

We know that the images they have collected will result in some stunning outcomes and we can’t

wait to see what they produce over the coming months.

Big Bang Fair

On Wednesday 27 June, around 200 Year 7 students went to the Big

Bang Fair held at the South of England Showground in Ardingly.

The Big Bang Fair, held in June, is one of the biggest school STEM

events held in the South East with thousands of students visiting

every year. It's now so big, they've spread it over two days.

Once we'd arrived, students had a short amount of time finding out

about some of the activities and stalls the event had to offer

before we took our seats for our show, 'Bass in your face'. Here,

students learned about sound and how sounds can be produced

digitally and acoustically. They got to feel and see the sound too.

Students then had free time to explore the vast site and find out

about a huge variety of STEM courses and careers. Many headed

straight to the reptiles to learn about these unusual creatures or to

make a fuss of the livestock and find out about the variety of jobs

within farming.

There were competitions and challenges galore: using a full sized

crane to knock a ball off a traffic cone, building the tallest tower,

connecting pipes to ensure water flowed and many more. A couple

of students managed to experience flying a plane. One of them

crashed and one landed on the wrong runway so they’ve work to do

on their piloting skills!

There were all sorts of planes, trains and automobiles to find out

about, solar telescopes to gaze down and inspirational projects to

learn about.

The day will have helped our Year 7s see just where subjects like

Science, Maths, Computing and Technology can take them and how

they can still be creative with the Arts and Music at the same time.

The possibilities are endless!

Students Speak Up To Save ESCC Music Service

On Wednesday 23 May, musicians from Heathfield

Community College were given the opportunity to

voice their opinions on the recent decision to hold a

public consultation on the future of the East Sussex

Music Service (ESMS) and their offer of instrumental

lessons to students across the county.

The College was visited by a team from the

BBC’s Sunday Politics Show who asked several of our

string musicians to perform in order to demonstrate

the impact ESMS has had on their lives from both a

musical and personal perspective.

Sixth Form students Nathan Tompsett and LouisaDollimore were interviewed and both gave very eloquent and reasoned arguments as to the benefits

and impact the music service has had on their development as musicians and the opportunities it

has afforded them. Our students shared the segment with opera singer Sir John Tomlinson and the

piece set the scene for a studio debate around the topic.

We are very proud of our students, their ability and willingness to stand up for what they believe in

and the fantastic performance they gave to the BBC. The reporters commented on how well the

students presented themselves and the confidence with which they performed and spoke,

describing them as “great ambassadors for the school”.

Louisa Dollimore said: “It was great to have the opportunity to defend the music service and

have our say on the cuts that have been proposed. Music is a vital part of our education, but

it has been consistently undervalued in recent years; these cuts only highlight this. In taking

part we hoped to emphasise how important music – and East Sussex Music Service – is to us, in

the hope that the message would be taken seriously.”

Nathan Tompsett added: “It was great that this pressing issue is being addressed not just on a

small scale, but by the BBC. It would be a great shame to see East Sussex Music Service go.”

The music service plays a vital role in supporting the College with 90% of the instrumental music

lessons being run by the service. The support and tuition they give to our students feeds directly

into the music department itself and the work the instrumental teachers do is invaluable.

We hope that you take the opportunity to watch

the programme and find out more about the work

of the music service and the information

surrounding the consultation.

Sports Day

Heathfield Community College travelled to Eastbourne Sports Park

for their annual Sports Day. With Heathfield Radio providing the

music, the crowd vocally showing their support and the

participants decked out in their house colours, the atmosphere

was electric.

It was a dreary day weather wise for the event but obviously ideal

conditions for the athletes, as there were some highly

competitive track and field events including a total of 11 College

records being broken! Some of the records had stood for over 30

years with new times and distances set that are unlikely to be

broken for another 30 years!

Sophia Mcdonald said: “Sports day was such a great event. I’m so glad I got to go and participate

in some of my favourite events. It was such a great atmosphere all day. Although it was a

competition, it was great fun and I enjoyed every second.”

Overall, the day proved once again to be a great event; the students showed both enthusiasm and

determination with many producing personal best times and distances. Congratulations to all students

who competed earning points for their Houses for both year group and overall trophies.

An especial congratulations go to Heffle House who won overall.

Head of PE, Mr Moore said: “Once again the students

worked incredibly hard throughout the day. They

never fail to impress with the quality of their

performances or behaviour. The day was punctuated

with some outstanding individual efforts, resulting in

a number of new College records. It was a fantastic

day’s competition and good to see a number of

parents supporting the students.”

Student Qualifies For British Finals

Year 10 student, Esme White, competes in Tumbling at National

Level 3. A sport which is very similar to Gymnastics but is a row of

somersaults down a tumble track which is 23m long.

Esme competed in Birmingham a few weeks ago for the South East

of England at the Regional Team Finals where she placed 6th in

the Country, qualifying for the British Finals in Nottingham on 7/8

July.

Esme said: “I have achieved 5 gold medals over the past year

and I also have the finals next weekend which will show where I

stand in the country. In the future, I would like to get onto

higher levels and carry on competing against the rest of the

country.”

Sixth Form

Oxford University Trip

On Wednesday 27 and Thursday 28 June, 16

aspirational Year 12 students visited the open day at

the University of Oxford.

Students stayed Wednesday night in student

accommodation in Christ Church College, eating dinner

in the famous Hall surrounded by paintings of kings,

queens, ex-prime-ministers and leaders in science and

the arts. Afterwards, our Year 12s enjoyed activities

put on by Christ Church students in the Junior Common

Room.

On Thursday, they were all up bright and early to make

the most of the Open Day. Our students attended

presentations, seminars, teas with professors and

chatted to as many tutors and students as they

could. We had lunch at St John’s College, where we

met up with a Heathfield alumnus, entering his final

year in Mathematics.

Many, many miles were trodden (or cycled!) visiting as

many colleges as was possible in one day. A most successful trip.

This is a fantastic achievement and we would like to wish Esme the best of luck at The Finals next

weekend!

‘School of Rock’ Raffle

A big thank you to everyone who has made contributions of time and donation of prizes for next

week’s ‘School of Rock’ raffle. I would personally like to thank Alice Lass and Eliane Lynch who

together with their parents made time to go out into the local community to distribute flyers and

obtain prizes. Without this kind of dedication and personable approach we would have genuinely

struggled to put this on.

We are still appealing to students to bring in a chocolate bar or packet of sweets by Tuesday 3

July as we would like to be able to make confectionary style hamper/s for the raffle. Donations

can be left with me at main school Reception.

Everything we raise over the three evenings will be for the Dining Hall refurbishment project

where we aim is to provide modern visuals, refreshed furniture including high level benching and

stools with a real focus on providing a modern healthy place for students to eat. We hope you can

help!

Y6 Welcome Evening, Tuesday 10 July 2018 – SOHCC Refreshment Stall

We are appealing for cake, biscuit and/or savoury donations for our refreshment stall at this

event. Contributions can be left at main school Reception on the day. We are looking forward to

welcoming the new students and their families alongside the Transition Team. All proceeds will

go towards the Dining Hall refurbishment project.

suggests that school students think that sending

revealing photos of themselves to boyfriends or

girlfriends or just posting them on social media is

“normal” even though at the same time they feel

that they are being pressurised into doing it, even

though they don’t want to, they are doing it

because they think it is “normal”. The report

says that they think it is expected as a normal part

of having a relationship. Girls in the survey said

that “unwanted touching” from both boys and girls

happens all the time and that if they complain

they are just told that it was just “banter”.

In reality, this is sexual harassment and it is

bullying, whether it comes from boys or girls. If

you feel pressurised into doing something that you

are uncomfortable with or don’t want to do, then

you are right: don’t do it and tell a trusted adult.

More worryingly, even if you don’t feel

pressurised, sexting is about making a digital

image of yourself available on the internet. Once

it is on the internet, it is always there; deleting it

won’t stop other people from seeing it; also

Instagram, Snapchat, WhatsApp and other ways of

sharing photos aren’t as private as you think. If

you share revealing digital photos of yourself you

are really saying: “I don’t mind my parents seeing

this” or “I don’t mind the whole school seeing

this” or “I don’t mind the adult that is

interviewing me for a job seeing this”. Do you

really not mind these things?

Instagram is one of the ways in which, sexting has

been taking place. For a guide to Instagram,
