Internationally, drums are made to differing formulas. By far, the main component is recycled scrap iron and they come in various grades making it extremely difficult to consistently control the base grade of recycled scrap iron. Plus, scrap iron usually contains rust and it is difficult to control what additives were used in the original manufacture of the product. Therefore, recycled scrap iron will have impurities in it. Roadwolf brake drums are made from 70% high quality virgin ingot and approximately 30% virgin scrap metal from local manufacturing by-products. USA made drums have base materials of 30% virgin ingot and 70% recycled scrap iron. In China, brake drums are made from an even higher percentage of recycled scrap iron and other metal fillers like old bicycles. Why it is important to have the same metallurgical formula? All Roadwolf brake drums contain the same metallurgical formula. The molten iron is tested before each production run to ensure the composition is to the exact specification of the proprietary formula. Other drum manufacturers control costs by using different levels of metallurgical formulas and additive packages. That is how they are able to make low cost drums with weights comparable to their premium drums. Why is it important that drums are molded one at a time? Brake drum manufacturers in the USA and China mold drums 3 at a time. Roadwolf drums are molded one drum per mold. This is a more expensive process but well worth it. First and most important, the Roadwolf drums cool down within each drum at the same rate - insuring roundness and metallurgical consistency within the drum. When you mold 3 drums per mold, the outer drums do not cool down at the same rate as the middle drum and within the outer drums they do not cool off at the same rate, which affects their metallurgical consistency. “Value drums” are no value!! They absorb less heat and dissipate it at slower rate. This causes the wheel end to operate at hotter temperatures resulting in brake fade occurring sooner, recovery time is slower, longer stopping distances, and increased brake lining wear.

Why use heat equalizer (HE) drums?Brake drums are a heat sink and, in turn, absorb the kinetic energy (heat) generated in stopping a vehicle. Roadwolf Heat Equalizer drums are precision machined thermal equalization brake drums which mean they are machined outside and inside to provide consistent wall thickness overall to maximize consistent heat dissipation, metal expansion and contraction. By going through this process, heat will dissipate at a more even rate and prevent “hot spots” due to varying wall thicknesses prevalent in non-machined outside drums. These “hot spots” end up being heat checks often seen in brake drums.
