Winter 2016
Hosler’s Headlines
As we are well into the sec-ond semester here at Heartland, things have been quite eventful. For instance, as you read the Heartbeat this quarter, you
will see that our students have been busy aca-demically in the classroom and competitively on the basketball courts. Many students par-ticipated in the ACSI Spelling Bee and our high schoolers are involved in a weekly mentoring book study. In addition, our alumni are having life-changing experiences while traveling around the world.
One of our seniors, Jacquelyn Chapman re-ceived an honor this fall as WYTV Student Ath-lete of the Week. Jacquelyn is an example of the many diligent, well-rounded students at Heartland. The vision statement of HCS states, "The vision of Heartland Christian School is to develop graduates who are Biblically-grounded, academically-qualified and thor-oughly-equipped to fulfill Christ's calling upon their lives by providing a unified team that fa-cilitates a comprehensive program of excel-lence within a nurturing environment." As you browse the Heartbeat, our hope is that you will see this vision exhibited in a variety of ways.
-Mr. Eric Hosler, Administrator
Making A Connection
According to the Oxford Dictionary, CONNECT is a verb meaning “bring together or into contact so that a real or notional link is estab-lished.” While that is true, here at Heartland Christian School CON-NECT means all that and so much more for its high school students and staff.
This year for a first time, small groups, namely CON-NECT GROUPS, consisting of approximately four high school students and one staff member have been formed and meet weekly to encourage one another in their walk with God. In addition to the student groups, a group of HCS mothers, grandmothers and friends has been meeting this year, as well. During their time together, each group is reading and discussing Mark Hall’s book entitled Thrive. In this book, Mark who is the lead singer for Casting Crowns, relates his own experiences as a follower of Christ and challenges the reader to do more than just survive. To quote Mark Hall, “God didn’t put you and me here just so we can survive through hard times. He put us here to thrive, to dig deep and reach out.”
Using the illustration of a tree planted by the water that is spoken of in Psalm 1, the first half of the book is devoted to helping the stu-dent dig deep roots as they cultivate their relationship with Jesus and understand more who God is and who we are in Him. The sec-ond half of the book which the groups begin at the end of January focuses on reaching out to others to make God known.

3rd & 4th Grade Little Lions: Having a “Ball”
The Little Lions Basketball Program has been in existence for three years now. The program was created to give the elementary students an oppor-tunity to learn the game of basketball and compete with other schools in the area. This program is an extension of the student’s educational experi-ence at Heartland. It helps build confidence, character and promotes the virtues of hard work and discipline in our students.
At the fourth grade level, there are kids that have some experience with playing basketball in an organized setting and others who have no experi-ence at all. So, from a coach’s standpoint it is critical that the kids learn the basic skills and fundamentals of the game of basketball.
Obviously, dribbling, passing, shooting and rebounding are fundamentals that are the focus. But, basketball is more than that. As both assistant coach and Heartland parent, Mr. JP Walker and I focus on the difference between "playing basketball”, which anyone can do at any time by simply picking up a basketball and going onto a court versus being a "basketball player", which is someone that chooses to understand how the game is played and to become disciplined in the skills of basketball in order to play it at a higher level.
From a spiritual standpoint we believe that it is our priority to teach Biblical disciplines of Christian Character within our program. Therefore, at every practice time is set aside to read scripture, talk about parallels between sports and the Christian life. It never ceases to amaze me how many teachable moments I encounter in my time coaching basketball.
Playing with passion and a desire to compete at the highest level, our 4th grade boys have been very successful thus far this year (4-0). They have also conducted themselves with a Christian Character that reflects very well on our families and our school.
-Mr. JP Morgan, 4th Grade Boys Head Coach
The Third Grade Boys’ Basketball team has been focusing on the disciplines it takes to be a true basketball player- dribbling, passing, and shooting along with the disciplines a follower of Christ displays- prayer, Bible reading, fasting, and serving. HCS dad, Mr. Matt Aikens, my assistant coach and I have seen growth in both areas. The team won its first game on January 9th displaying those disciplines and they continue to work hard and become a close team that supports each other. Our hope and prayer is that these boys grow to love God and glorify Him in all they do including basketball.
-Mr. Jason Norbo, 3rd Grade Boys Head Coach
This year, a Little Lady Lions team has been formed with both third and fourth graders coming together to compete. The teams look forward to their games which are held most Saturdays through the West Branch Warriors League. Parent, Mr. John Lightly, has been assisting me in prac-tice and at the games each weekend. The ladies have been playing with all heart. It’s been such fun watching them grow and develop in their skills since the beginning when we first started out. I look forward to continuing to work with them and see them put their skills to the test on the court!
-Mrs. Jennifer Posta, 3rd & 4th Grade Little Lady Lions Head Coach
WYTV Student Athlete of the Week: Jacquelyn Chapman
By Chase Evans Published: October 8, 2015, 6:42 pm
Columbiana, OH (WYTV) – Senior Jacquelyn Chapman has emerged as a quiet but confident leader for the Lions. She’s racked up 9 varsity letters in 4 different sports…volleyball, track, cross country, and basketball. Plus, her grades also top the charts, making her a perfect fit for our Student Athlete of the Week.
“You know, even though I’m quiet, I like to really get in there and do things and show people what I’m made of,” said Chapman.
Jacquelyn has attended Heartland Christian since kindergarten and has now grown into a three year starter on the vol-leyball team, while setting four school records in track.
“I love volleyball because we’re part of a team,” said Chapman. “We hold each other accountable, we push each other but track is more of an individualized thing and I don’t really like that as much about track but I do like to run and be competitive in that.”
Off the court, Jacquelyn is just as competitive, leading her class with a 3.95 GPA and volunteering her time to many clubs.
“During the school day it’s important to focus on school, and then when you’re on the court, focus on your sport that you’re playing and then after that, everything just falls into place.”
Jacquelyn has also displayed a heart for service while at Heartland, going on mission trips to St. Jude’s Hospital and Philadelphia to help those less fortunate.
“I believe that God has given me that ability and he’s put that in me to really reach out and be kind to people and loving and caring.”
After high school, Jacquelyn hopes to return to her roots, and ultimately teach Math at Heartland Christian.
“Having the opportunity to go to a Christian school is amazing to me,” said Chapman. “We go out there and we play for God and the abilities that he’s given to us and we want to bring him glory.”

EMILY SOMMERS
Hi! My name is Emily Sommers, a 2013 Heartland graduate and I re-cently had the amazing opportunity to take part in a medical mis-sion’s trip to Haiti along with six of my fellow nursing classmates from Malone University. We departed for Haiti on December 30 and spent ten days in the city of Carrefour, about 45 minutes outside of Port-au-Prince. We worked with an organization called "Hearts United with Haiti" which was started by a woman, Crystal Funk six years ago who had a heart for missions.
While in Haiti we spent much of our time meeting the medical needs of the Haitian's. Our ministries included working at a malnutrition clinic on the mountain side, setting up our own clinic in town, and canvassing the streets taking blood pressures and treating wounds. One of my favorite experiences was the time I spent at a local maternity hospital where I assisted in seven baby deliveries, one of which I delivered on my own! God had placed me in the right place at the right time and it was a beautiful thing to be a part of.
I will cherish the many moments spent sharing Christ's love and praying with the people of Haiti. It is amazing to see the many ways in which God has worked through my team and the lives He has impacted. This trip has been such a great learning experience and I feel it will make me a better nurse in the future. My hope is to return to Haiti or wherever God calls me to in the future and pursue medical missions.

DAWN LARICCIA
Shalom, HCS! My name is Dawn LaRiccia and I graduated from Heartland in 2011. I have been so blessed during my time in college to visit different places around the world, such as India, China, and Jamaica. But my most recent visit was to a place that many of you may have read about this morning in Scripture: Israel. I went with a group called Covenant Journey, who invites college students to go on an affordable tour throughout Israel for 10 days. The group consisted of about 50 other college students from colleges all across the nation. We visited many sites throughout our time there, such as the Sea of Galilee, Capernaum, the Dead Sea, the Mount of Beatitudes, Caiaphas’ House, the Via Delarosa- where Jesus was crucified, the Garden Tomb, and many more places. The best way that I can de-scribe this trip is if you can imagine going to your best friend’s house for the first time, where you are able to see the places your best friend talked about, go on the adventures that your best friend went on, and walk through what your best friend walked through while here on earth. As you can imagine, your relationship with your best friend will never be the same after this visit. I wish I could sit down for coffee with you and share story after story of what I was able to see and learn, but I will leave you with this thought: everything that Jesus did was intentional. From the places He went to, to the miracles that He performed, the people He talked to, everything was meaningful. I encourage you to take a trip that will impact the rest of your life and go to Israel, but if life situations prevent you from doing so at the mo-ment, I encourage you to study and learn more of Jesus and the context of which He did His ministry. Let’s strive to know Him, from both the Old and New Testament. In order to make Him known, we first must know Him. Start today, then tomorrow, and don’t stop. May we never stop knowing the One who knows us!

A Fresh New Look
During our Christmas break, Mr. Gary Hall, our Building Supervisor, spent many hours working on Mrs. Fry’s 2nd grade classroom renovation. He replaced the non-functioning radiator with a big and beautiful book-case with a closet on each side. After completing this part of the renovation, he had planned on completing it by putting on a fresh coat of paint, until he received some exciting news. After a donor observed the work being done, they decided to fund a new ceiling that consisted of a new drop ceiling of tiles and inset lighting. So, once he did complete this job and the painting, the room looks new! The students are enjoying their refurbished classroom and have shown their appreciation to Mr. Hall for his many hours of work!

Calling All Legos and Tinker Toys Looking for a New Home
This school year, Heartland Christian School was pleased to expand the use of technology in our class-rooms. Part of the technology experience for our students is the introduction of LittleBits. LittleBits is a library of electronic modules for learning and inventing. As the students are building LittleBit projects, they are using their creativity to include Legos and Tinker Toys in their designs. We would like to offer your unused Legos and Tinker Toys a new home in our Computer Lab where they will be loved, used, and enjoyed by children of all ages! A collection tote is located in the school office for any Lego or Tinker Toy donation. Thank you for encouraging our students in this way.
