On courageThe most courageous thing I've ever had to do was put two feet on the floorone cold January morning.

It would have been easier to pull the covers up tight around my neck. It wouldhave been safer to pull them right on over my head. But my nine­year old waswaiting for his good morning hug and my husband was waiting for his goodmorning kiss. I was simply waiting for a double portion of strength that I sodesperately needed that day.

These words spoken by my geneticist a few weeks prior replayed in myhead: Confirmed diagnosis of Vascular Ehlers­Danlos…the outlook isgrim…you inherited this genetic mutation from your mother…your bodymakes faulty collagen…your life­expectancy will be shortened…there is nocure…you are prone to spontaneous arterial and organ ruptures…there is notreatment…prepare your bucket list and stay close to a major hospital.

I had no idea how to face this new normal. I was quite certain it would takemore courage than I had ever known.    

And so, as I watched the heavy sky release the snow that morning, my prayerwas this:

 

Lord, give me courage. Because I have none.

I’ve said before that it is the simplest of prayers that God seems to answerthe swiftest. This prayer was no different. A few moments and a giant deepbreath later, my two feet hit the hardwood floor and I began to make my wayinto the kitchen.

Learning to face life with an incurable, terminal genetic disorder has requiredme to rethink my definition of courage. And what I’ve learned is that truecourage has nothing to do with earthly bravery and everything to do withheavenly focus.  

I don’t know what you are facing today. But I do know that we can faceanything on this earth if we rely on the only One who is capable of giving us acourageous heart.

What follows here are ten short devotions and a few journaling prompts,intended to turn your heart towards a God who has not given you a spirit offear. They are designed so that you can walk through the devotions duringweekdays and the journaling prompts over the weekend. But if you’re readingthis on a Tuesday and you’d like to start on a Wednesday, by all means goright ahead.

Know that I pray for everyone who reads the words that fill these pages,asking God to reveal to you that He alone is capable of giving you thecourage to face your greatest fears. You can trust Him.

The little girl curled her toes around the concrete edge of the deep end. Shelooked down into the pool’s cool water, deeper than anything she had everimagined. She looked back at the plastic wading pool where she had beencontent to play all day until this very moment. Then she looked just ahead ofher into her father’s eyes where he stayed, tall and steady, arms outstretchedand waiting for her to take the leap.

“You won’t leave me, will you? You’ll stay right there?” she asked.

“No, daughter. I will be right here. I will never leave you and I won’t let youdown,” her father replied.

She set her chin and bent her knees. She leaped. She flew. And she landedsquarely in the arms of her father.

What lies in your deep end today? Courage has little to do with earthlybravery and everything to do with heavenly focus. Instead of keeping ourgaze on the deep end before us or the shallow end behind us, let’s keep ourgaze steady on our heavenly Father who is always with us. He will neverleave you or let you down.

Have I not commanded you? Be strong and courageous. Do not be

afraid; do not be discouraged, for the Lord your God will be

with you wherever you go.

Monday

When my son was a toddler, he would walk the beach with us by stepping histiny feet into my husband’s footprints. Even when my husband’s long legswould take him far ahead of us, my son knew the way because he simplyfollowed his father’s footsteps. He never questioned the path before himbecause he trusted the person who had walked it first.

Thankfully, we serve a God who goes before us in all that we do. There is noneed to fear the unknown, because our God has already been there,ordained it, and achieved victory over it. He does not call us into placeswhere His feet have not already marched. Our job is to simply fit ourfootsteps into His.

Would you allow Him to light the way for your next step today? Even if thepath is foreign to you, God has walked it already. He knows the way; all youhave to do is follow. 

God does not call us into places where His feet have notalready marched.

The LORD himself goes before you and will be with you; he will

never leave you nor forsake you. Do not be afraid; do not be

discouraged.

Deuteronomy 31:8

Tuesday

Sometimes God calls us to a battle that we cannot fight. We cannot fight itbecause the battle simply isn’t ours to wage. Our job may not be to swing thesword, but to cease striving instead, because the most powerful display ofstrength is often a quiet one. A strength that is still and unwavering, even inthe midst of adversity, of hardship, and of suffering. A strength that clings towhat the very first verse in Psalm 46 tells us…that God is our strength andrefuge, an ever­present help in trouble.

The beauty of a quiet strength is that our stillness illuminates any movementmade by the real warrior in our story…our heavenly Father.  

When struggle calls, let us not waver in our knowledge that God is alwaysfighting for us. Let us choose a quiet strength so that we may exalt Him. If weknow that He is God, that He is in control, and that He is always working forour good, what do we have to fear?

The beauty of a quiet strength is that our stillness illuminatesany movement made by the real warrior in our story...our

heavenly Father.

Be still and know that I am God. I will be exalted among the

nations, I will be exalted in the earth.

Psalm 46:10

Wednesday

American Ninja Warrior. The Spartan Race. The Ironman. The DoubleIronman. The Triple Ironman. No, these are not titles for the next Supermanmovie and its sequels. These are examples of extreme fitness challengesthat have become rather popular in today’s society as the ultimate display ofphysical strength. Although I marvel at the obstacles these athletes overcomeand admire the commitment required to achieve their level of prowess, I willnever come close to obtaining the level of physical strength these extremecompetitors have.

I’m okay with that for a lot of reasons. I like raspberry­filled donuts way toomuch, for one. And for two, I know my strength barometer is not marked withmuscle and determination, but with my ability to rely on God during anystruggle I may face. God reveals Himself best when we are at our least. It isin our weakest moments that God can really flex His muscles, and those arethe ones we want the world to see.  

The next time you are facing hardship, persecution, or difficult circumstances,remind yourself that in that very moment of suffering, you are the strongestyou will ever be if you allow Christ’s power to rest on you. 

God reveals Himself best when we are at our least.

But he said to me, “My grace is sufficient for you, for my power

is made perfect in weakness.” Therefore I will boast all the

more gladly about my weaknesses, so that Christ’s power may

rest on me.

2 Corinthians 12:9

Thursday

Weary. Discouraged. Heartbroken. Defeated. Devastated. These five wordshave shown up altogether too often in recent news reports. Maybe thesewords resonate with you because you ache for our country to be healed fromso many burdens. Maybe they resonate with you because you hurt for a dearfriend who carries these emotions. Maybe they resonate with you becausethey too accurately describe the condition of your heart today.

For the days when we feel we have no strength left in us to face the comingdays, let the words from Isaiah 33:2 flood our prayers. Let them ring louderthan the five words above. Let this be our prayer for our country, for ourfriends, and for ourselves.

Lord, how we long for you! Cover us with your grace. Infuse us with yourstrength when we rise. Let the knowledge and hope of your salvation plantitself in our hearts, and in the hearts of those around us, as we tread forwardin this broken world.

You alone are our strength, Lord.      

Lord, we are hungry for the knowledge and hope of yoursalvation.

Lord, be gracious to us; we long for you. Be our strength every

morning, our salvation in time of distress.

The first step towards courageous living is identifying our fears. We must callthem out of the darkness so that God's truth can bring them into the light.Take a few moments today to prayerfully consider the things that bring youthe most fear in this season of your life and write what comes to mind here.

Courage is defined as the ability to do something that frightens you. Everytime God asks us to be courageous, He also asks us to do something. Wehave work to do for His kingdom. And if you want to serve God, you will haveto face your fears. There is no easy way around this.

But God never wants us to face our fears alone. Remember that when Godasks us to be courageous, He also promises to be with us. There is nothing,nothing, that we will face without His hand solidly intertwined with our own.

What is it that you fear today? Ask God to reveal any kingdom work to bedone that may lie in your fears. Your ability to conquer them can be found intrusting God, who is faithful to keep His promises. Do the work. God is withyou.     

If we want to serve God, we will have to face our fears.

David also said to Solomon his son, “Be strong and courageous,

and do the work. Do not be afraid or discouraged, for the LORD

God, my God, is with you. He will not fail you or forsake you

until all the work for the service of the temple of the LORD is

finished.

1 Chronicles 28:20

Monday

I wonder if your list of tasks to be done today looks a bit like mine: unload thedishwasher, load the dishwasher, fold clothes from the dryer, load thewashing machine, do work, go to the post office and the bank, clean off thedining room table, buy groceries, cook dinner, and clean the kitchen. Soundspretty ordinary, right?

Ordinary people can do powerful things. Peter and John brought about fivethousand people to salvation on the day that others noticed these twoordinary men had simply been with Jesus. Intimacy with Him can empower uswith courage we didn’t think we had to do things we never thought we woulddo.

What’s on your to­do list today? Make sure you include be courageous. Jesusis all you need to check that one off your list.

Intimacy with Jesus empowers us with courage we didn'tthink we had to do things we never thought we would do.

When they saw the courage of Peter and John and realized that

they were unschooled, ordinary men, they were astonished and

they took note that these men had been with Jesus.

Tuesday

Have you ever seen a deer run? They are fast, bounding, and light on theirfeet with their heads held high. When they run, they make great, leapingstrides towards wherever they might be going, and they run with a sense offreedom that is clearly evident.

Merriam­Webster’s Dictionary defines strength as this: the quality that allowssomeone to deal with problems in a determined and effective way. But theBible defines strength in one word. Actually, it’s one name.

Lord.

Indeed, He is the very thing, the only thing,that enables us to conquer ourmountains, to deal with our problems, and to overcome all that we may befacing on this earth. And He does this because He is sovereign over allthings.

There is great freedom in trusting the One who rules over everything we seeand also everything we cannot see. It is a freedom that allows our feet to runlike a deer, even in the midst of our greatest struggles. And it can be found byplacing our complete trust in one name. The Lord is our strength.

The Bible defines strength in one word..Actually it's one name - Lord.

The Sovereign Lord is my strength; he makes my feet like the

feet of a deer, he enables me to tread on the heights.

Habakkuk 3:19

Wednesday

My son has a pretty healthy fear of heights. Recently, he tackled this fear ona two­story climbing adventure at a children's museum. Even with a safetynet all around him, he was cautious as he climbed.

"What happens if I fall, Mom?""What happens if you don't? The view from the top is pretty incredible."

God does not want us to live in fear. He desires for us to live in freedom. Butit's more than His desire for our greater good. God commands us to live withcourage. Its not advice or an ask or a pretty please, will you be strong? It's acommand. If we want to serve God, we'll have to face our fears.

But here's the good news: once we step into courageous living with Him, theview is pretty incredible. And what seemed scary before becomesinsignificant to the adventure that awaits us. That fearful thing you conqueredyesterday is the easy thing you'll step over today. And tomorrow? Only Godknows, but you can trust Him that He will be with you.

"Mom!!!! You can see for miles up there! See you later! I'm climbing to the topagain!"

And again. And again. Be strong. Be courageous. God is with you.

With God, that fearful thing you conquered yesterday is theeasy thing you'll step over today.

Be on your guard; stand firm in the faith; be courageous; be

strong.

Thursday

Joab, the captain of King David’s army, may not have made the wisest ofchoices throughout all of his life, but he was spot on in this battle. He wassurrounded with enemy forces: the Aramean soldiers stood before him andthe Ammonite soldiers stood behind him. He could choose to fight or he couldchoose to surrender. But either way, he had to choose. Joab knew thatcourage was a choice, not a feeling. And so he chose courage, because healso knew that the battle was not just for him and his men.

The battles that we face every day are bigger than us. We are fighting notonly for our own hearts, but for the hearts of those around us. As the body ofChrist, we must choose to help our brothers and sisters when they are inneed, knowing that they will do the same for us when the time comes. Whodo you know that needs the love of Christ today?

With trust that the Lord will always do what is good, let us fight bravely for Hispeople now.

We are fighting not only for our own hearts, but for thehearts of those around us.

Joab said, "If the Arameans are too strong for me, then you are to

rescue me; but if the Ammonites are too strong for you, then I

will rescue you. Be strong, and let us fight bravely for our

people and the cities of our God. The LORD will do what is good

in his sight.”

1 Chronicles 19:12-13

Friday

The second step towards courageous living is applying God's Word to ourfears. There is power in His Word to extinguish the fears that threaten to keepus from living free, abundantly courageous lives. Go back through thisdevotional and pick one or two verses that resonated the most with you. Ormaybe God has revealed another verse outside of this devotion during ourtime together. Whichever verses speak to you the most, write them downhere and commit them to memory. Begin each day by reciting these verses toyourself. Plant the truths of these verses in your heart and watch how Godanswers your prayer for courage.

On moving forwardHere's what I almost don't want to tell you and what you probably alreadyknow: courage isn't found in fourteen days.

Courage is found in the baby steps. It's in the painstakingly slow andresolutely committed choice of putting one foot in front of the other when thepath before you seems impossible. And that path cannot be traveled in justfourteen days.

But the good news is that you only need the courage to move forward in theone baby step for today. God will supply the courage you need for tomorrow.And the next day. And the next.

The most important thing is that you move forward. You are fourteen daysstronger than you were two weeks ago. You've got fourteen Bible versesready to be thrown at those moments when you want to give up. And we'veonly just scratched the surface with what God's Word teaches us aboutcourage.

Go ahead. Have a look for yourself. See what God is waiting to show you inHis Word. Just think of where you will be next month. And the next month.And the next.
