Hearing Ear Dogs

Hearing dogs for the deaf alert deaf people to sounds, both inside and outside of the home. Some deaf people also choose to get hearing dogs for safety reasons.

How are they identified?

By a collar or harness which is either yellow or orange.

Which dogs are chosen?

Many breeds and sizes

Intelligent

Agreeable disposition

Good concentration and work habits

What kind of training?

Most dogs are trained by professionals during a three to five month period.

Train to respond to both voice and hand signals.

Learn to distinguish between different sounds.

Training period?

When the owner is looking for a dog, the owner-candidate train together for a 2-3 week period to ensure there is a connection at the home-like training center.

OR The owner-candidate train together for 5-7

days at home, with a handler.

Fees?

Non profit organizations spend about $1000 to train a dog. The get monies from donors.

Fee for candidate: Free or small fee.

Service Dogs

Help physically or mentally disabled persons

• Retrieve dropped objects

• Turn on/off lights• Push elevator buttons• Push wheel chairs

Psychiatric Dogs

A person with a mental disability may need a dog to be able to go out in public (agoraphobic), or may be autistic and need the dog to keep them focused.

These dogs are trained NEVER to leave their handler's side.

Service DogsSpecialty Dogs

Some dogs are trained for people with multiple

disabilities, like a guide/mobility assist dog.

Rescue Dogs

Assist to find humans after a tragedy.

Service Dogs Laws

• There are laws that cover the right of a disabled person to be accompanied by an Assistance (or Service) dog.

• Each assistant dog has a different color harness or collar.

While working:• 1. Do not pet, make

noises, or call to the Assistance Dog.

• 2. Do not feed the dog.

• 3. Talk to the handler, and not to the dog!
