Think Feet First in 2012 – be active and step, scoot or cycle to your destination Healthy Murraylands brings pizza kitchen to Karoonda Farm Fair In 2012, the Mid Murray and Murray Bridge OPAL teams will be working on helping their communities to ‘Think Feet First’ and use active trav- el modes in and around their districts. This month, the OPAL teams have launched a new 12- month theme based on active travel, and essentially this means they want to create more opportunities to walk, cycle, scoot or skateboard to nearby destinations. From this month onwards, both the Mid Murray and Murray Bridge teams will be working with schools, families, businesses, council teams and more to find easier ways for people to look at replacing trips in the car – for trips on foot or wheels. Mid Murray Council OPAL Manager Courtney Blacker said she recognised that activ- ities such as riding scooters or skateboards were not always easily accessible in many of the rural and remote areas across the district. “For families who live outside of regional townships, there are not always the opportuni- ties and infrastructure avail- able nearby for activities such as riding scooters or skate- boards,” Ms Blacker said. “Because of this, we will not only be promoting and sup- porting opportunities for chil- dren and families to step, cycle and scoot more often, but we will also be looking at a broad range of activities which can help local kids get outdoors and be active more often.” Also as part of the Think Feet First campaign, OPAL will be bringing an educational show to local primary schools. This light-hearted, fun and educational show will give local students the chance to hear about some simple ways to be active on their journey to and from school. More information on these shows will be distributed to schools soon. Both communities will be holding Think Feet First events in their local towns in the coming months – these events will be advertised in local newspapers and newsletters soon – so be sure to keep an eye out. In the meantime, for more information on OPAL or the Think Feet First campaign, contact Mid Murray OPAL Manager Courtney Blacker on 8569 0179 or Murray Bridge OPAL Manager Kylie Tekell on 8539 1435; or log on to www.opal.sa.gov.au. Gourmet healthy pizzas will be a feature of this year’s Karoonda Farm Fair, with the new Healthy Murraylands program holding a competition on site with local people to see who can make the tastiest, and healthiest pizza in the Mallee. Healthy Murraylands is proud to sponsor and take part in the 2012 Karoonda Farm Fair by teaming up with Mallee Health to promote health and wellbeing. For 26 years the Karoonda Farm Fair has show- cased the Murraylands, encouraging community spirit and pride. Now in its 27th year the Farm Fair promises to bring big crowds to the region and provide some- thing for everyone. Some of you may remember the Pizza Challenges held at the Karoonda Farm Fair several years ago. These were very popular and brought something new and interactive to the Fair. This year, Healthy Murraylands is bringing the Pizza Challenge back with a healthy twist! With four Challenges over the two days in cate- gories of School, Dignitary, Farmer and Celebrity, the competition promises to be entertaining if nothing else. Contestants’ pizzas will be judged on three crite- ria – appearance, taste and nutrition. Watch out for Andrew ‘Cosi’ Costello who will be back with his channel 9 TV crew for his second appearance as Healthy Murraylands Ambassador. Cosi will be commentating the Saturday Pizza Challenges and will also be involved in the very popular Fashion Parades. Another personality to look out for is Paris of Amore Woodfired Ovens. Paris is an expert when it comes to pizza and will be demonstrating pizza base tossing and pizza assembly before each Challenge. Come along and sample his margherita pizzas which will be available at the Healthy Murraylands site. After the last Fashion Parade on Friday evening, Healthy Murraylands will also bring to you a Muay Thai martial art demonstration. Come along and see experienced Muay Thai boxers in action. The Karoonda Farm Fair is held for two days from Friday 30 to Saturday 31 March 2012, and you can find Healthy Murraylands in the Fashion Parade tent – they would love to see you there! More information can be found at www.healthymurraylands.com.au This healthy communities initiative was funded by the Australian Government. The program is being delivered by the 5 local government authorities of the Murraylands. Healthy Murraylands Coordinator Bianca Gazzola and ambassador Andrew ‘Cosi’ Costello will be hosting a healthy pizza challenge at this year’s Karoonda Farm Fair. STARCLUB helps future proof Meningie Cricket Club COMPETITION: The Lavender Federation Trail has this month launched its new website with updated maps, news and even more information which creates opportunities for everyone across the Murraylands to get out and walk around our his- toric district. It will also launch an extension to the trail in April this year, which will run from Springton to Truro. The details and maps for this walk- ing trail upgrade will be launched at the Opening of the Walking Trail Season in Truro on 1 April (see more information, page 3) – where new maps and resources will be available from the Lavender Federation Trail team. The new website includes downloadable maps of all the loop trails as well as a photo gallery, latest news, links to other sites of interest, informa- tion for new and amateur walk- ers, tips on Federation Trail accommodation and plenty more. New trail sections also on the website are: • The historic Springton Loop Trail with short and long sections; • The historic Moculta Loop Trail; • Truro Spur trail which connects Truro with the main trail; • Keyneton Spur trail which con- nects Keyneton with the main trail; and • The Eden Valley Loop Trail. For more information, visit the new website at: www.lavenderfederationtrail.org.au A new club planning tool being offered to sporting clubs across the Murraylands by the Office of Recreation and Sport, is already making positive changes for the Meningie Cricket Club. The latest initiative called STARCLUB, provides information and support to continue the develop- ment of the club providing the best environment possible for members and the wider community. Meningie Cricket Club President, Mr Richard Boscence said he was first informed about the STARCLUB program and its benefits by a represen- tative from the South Australian Cricket Association who had experienced the benefits of the program first-hand. Mr Boscence said “The STARCLUB program will help to keep our club safe by making sure that we have up to date policies in place such as a bullying and harassment policy. It will also assist us to review our internal constitution regularly and have a strategic plan in place for the future. This should help to maintain club continuity as various com- mittee positions turn over. I also see the recogni- tion of being known as a STARCLUB as a big ben- efit,” he added. “We signed up in September 2011 using the easy on-line tool. Once I knew that STARCLUB was just a way of measuring how the club was performing and there was no pressure to have all of the boxes ticked, I felt comfortable to finish all of the regis- tration questions.” Mr Boscence said being part of the STARCLUB pro- gram has helped to benchmark the progression of the club and which areas required improvement in the future. “It has helped us to make sure that we are up to date with the latest policies such as the Child Safe Officer policy. It has given motivation for the club to reach the STARCLUB status,” he added. Murraylands STARCLUB Field Officer, Leonie Leopold said she was also working with a range of other local sporting clubs to look at affiliating themselves with the program. “By increasing the number of clubs registered with the STARCLUB program, I am able to get a better insight into where skill development and resources can be directed at a local level,” Ms Leopold said. “For example, if a majority of the clubs registered with STARCLUB require further assistance in coaching skills, succession planning for volunteer roles, or junior development practices, then this new program can help deliver training, workshops and resources into the local community to help fill these gaps. This allows the program to work one- on-one with clubs, but also maintain a regional focus where sporting clubs can share resources provided from a State, Regional and Association level.” Details: Murraylands Sporting Clubs can register online www.recsport.sa.gov.au/starclub or contact the local Murraylands STARCLUB Field Officer, Leonie Leopold on 8535 6800. The winner will be drawn on Wednesday, 11 April, 2012 and notified via phone call. Farmers’ markets are becomingan increasingly popular way forfood producers to sell their pro-duce directly to customers. This opportunity is now possiblefor Murraylands residents fol-lowing the official launch of theMurray Bridge Farmers’ Marketon March 10.Market Manager, Paul Geislersaid the market stocked a widevariety of seasonal fresh fruit andvegetables and as we move intoautumn, an abundance of freshproduce including fish, olive oil, preserves and bread. “Some stallholders are weekly, others come fortnightly. Newstalls are being added everyweek and the market continuesto evolve. Community responsehas also been very good withmany customers now weeklyregulars. Shoppers are comingfrom far afield and have com-

mented on the relaxed feel ofthe market being able to enjoy acoffee and breakfast whilstshopping,” he said.Mr Geisler said the difference

about shopping at a Farmers’market compared to elsewhereis that customers are buyingfresh from a local producertherefore supporting the localregion.“Food is not stored or pickedgreen to cope with transport soyou are getting food at its peakof freshness and ripeness. Theconsumer and grower can inter-act directly, consumers can tellthe grower what they like, whatthey don’t as well as what elsethey would like to see,” headded.Mr Geisler said, “Customers canget advice on how to cook it,grow it themselves, and how tostore and handle food for opti-

mum life once it’s taken home”.“The businesses are local andessentially the more local pro-duce we eat, the more local jobswe create. The distance foodtravels is greatly reduced and sofood can be presented to thecustomer at its optimum nutri-tion and flavour and reducedenvironmental impact,” he said.Details: The market is on everySat morning from 8am –12noon at the Wharf Precinctnext to the lawn tennis courtsand Sturts Reserve. Membershipis available for $40 per annum, allowing a 10% discount acrossall stalls, assisting with the oper-ation of the not-for-profit organ-isation. If you don’t live near one of these gyms you

can create your own fitness obstacle courseusing stairs to run, a bench for step ups or anice section of grass for crunches or push-ups.A jog on a fresh, crisp morning is a great wayto get the day started or a 10 or 20 minutebike ride can be a nice way to wind down inthe afternoon. What’s great about outdoor activity is it’s freeand you can have fun doing it close to homeand at your own pace, when you have time. So switch off the television and computer andget active outdoors this Autumn!Autumn is the perfect time of the year to beactive outdoors! For those who enjoy social catch ups while being active, we have more and morewalking, running and cycling groups appearing across the region and group detailscan be found online at www.healthymurray-lands.com.au
