  • THE HEALTHCARE PARTNER FOR YOU

Bupa has undergone some significant changes in 2012 we see it as the starting point of an exciting journey to achieving our 2020 goals, that unites us globally, sets the foundation for accelerated growth and will help us become the most trusted and recommended healthcare organisation in the world.

    8 Bupa Annual Review 2012

  • BU PA I N AUSTRAL IA AND N E W ZEALAND

Bupa is part of an international business, which cares for more than 11 million people across 190 countries and reinvests its profits back into the business so we can deliver better products and services for our customers and better health outcomes.

Being part of a global group also gives us the strength and backing to set ambitious goals. For Bupa, this has seen us articulate our 2020 ambition, which is to be a healthcare partner to many more millions of people around the world; deliver extraordinary business performance; and to create an organisation where people love to work. In Australia and New Zealand, we are seeking to fast track this by integrating the way we operate and looking more holistically across our businesses to see where we can add value to deliver services that help more people live longer, healthier and happier lives. This is of course Bupas Purpose.

In October 2012, the Bupa Group was reorganised into five market units and the Australian and New Zealand businesses were formally brought together. I was delighted to be appointed Managing Director of the new Australian and New Zealand market unit and given the opportunity to lead the 12,000 plus employees that drive our business success. This also saw us officially unite our three business units Australian Private Health Insurance, Bupa Care Services Australia and Bupa Care Services New Zealand.

In December, we also announced our acquisition of Innovative Cares aged care portfolio, making us the largest private provider of aged care in Australia. We were also pleased to enter into an agreement to acquire Dental Corporation, Australia and New Zealands largest dental group, helping us further diversify our business. Private Health Insurance experienced strong growth in 2012 with another 150,000 people becoming Bupa members. With 3.4 million members, we are the largest privately owned health insurer in Australia.

However, we recognise that to achieve our vision of becoming a healthcare partner to our customers, we must continue to develop innovative products and health solutions. For example, Bupas landmark 2012 partnership with Healthscope enhanced member benefits when using Healthscopes network of hospitals, medical centres and skin clinics. This adds to our already extensive health programs and online health tools, calculators and mobile apps. These apps

include FoodSwitch which has been adopted by more than 300,000 people to help them make healthier food choices, the Brainy app which is aimed at dementia risk reduction and has had 250,000 users and the newly released Choosing a care home app.

As a national and international healthcare leader, the health and wellbeing of our community, improving health outcomes and the affordability and accessibility of the health system are critically important to us. This is why we actively continue to advocate on health reform and policy issues relevant to our customers.

We continue to invest in partnerships and sponsorships that enable us to connect more broadly with the community and inspire them to take the necessary steps to get active and start thinking about their health. In addition, through the Bupa Health Foundation, we are playing a leading role in the health system and generating new ideas and approaches that will improve the health of all Australians. The Foundation is one of the largest corporate foundations dedicated to health, and in 2012 it directly supported research in skin cancer, autism, mental illness and macular degeneration.

Our business success, combined with a great brand and great people, gives us a fantastic platform from which to accelerate our growth. As we look to the future, we will be undertaking further initiatives that will continue to diversify our business and achieve our vision of becoming a healthcare partner to our customers. We will work to expand our aged care portfolio, enhance our innovative online services and rollout a new retail model to meet our customers needs.

As Bupa enters an exciting period, which presents tremendous opportunities in Australia and New Zealand, our primary goal remains to help all our customers to be healthier and live longer, healthier, happier lives.

  • CONTINUING TO BUILD OUR BRAND

In 2011, we started to change the way we work from the inside out bringing three brands together as one, and shifting our mindset from operating as a health insurer to being a healthcare partner. The joining of HBA, MBF and Mutual Community to become Bupa has been enormously successful and our Find a healthier you campaign has significantly raised Bupas market presence.

We are continuing to build on this campaign by demonstrating how our members can use their health cover to proactively manage their health. Because, lets face it, its much easier to have regular catch-ups with your dentist than need the occasional major rescue! And, by highlighting how our health services, health information and innovative tools can help people manage their health, we aim to inspire them to make healthier choices.

Bupas expertise extends well beyond health cover to health assessment, health coaching, international health cover, optical care, dental care, aged care and corporate health services. We offer all this for one simple reason we want to help find a healthier you.

    12 Bupa Annual Review 2012

  • PROVIDING HEALTH SERVICES IN OUR REGIONAustralia has long been considered the lucky country and this is certainly true of its healthcare system. With a universal public health system that is backed by a thriving private health sector, together they are well placed to address and devise solutions to meet the countrys future health and aged care services challenges.

The public system is important in providing access to affordable healthcare and a good standard of service for all Australians. Nevertheless, almost half of all Australians recognise the value and choice available in the non-public sector and opt to top up their healthcare with private health insurance.

As the countrys largest privately owned private health insurer, we provide insurance to 3.4 million Australians and cover a third of the market. The private health sector is a vital partner in helping manage the increased demand for health services and reducing the pressure on the public system. Through our 60-year history in Australian healthcare we have proudly continued to deliver high-quality health cover that is affordable and represents real value.

Bupa Care Services is the largest provider of residential aged cares services in Australia and New Zealand. We are committed to meeting the needs of an ageing population and our goal is for our name to be synonymous with the highest quality aged care services.

Rising to the challengeChronic illness, an ageing population and the rising costs and demand for care are rapidly emerging challenges. Thats why Bupa is actively engaging with state and federal governments, professional and consumer organisations and leaders in health care provision and research to ensure the attributes and benefits of the private healthcare system are fully considered as part of Australias ongoing policy discussion around health reform.

To meet the rising cost and demand for aged care services, we are advocating for greater flexibility and choice so that older Australians and New Zealanders have access to the most suitable care and services to meet their evolving needs. We continue to expand our aged care services and have tailored many of our residential aged care homes to meet residents health needs; providing specialised dementia care is a high priority. Bupa Care Services is the major corporate sponsor of Alzheimers Australia and Alzheimers New Zealand, and is funding research and community outreach programs to support people living with dementia and their carers.

Its also estimated that the aged care workforce will need to grow by more than 500,000 over the next 40 years to meet the needs of Australias ageing population. Bupas Graduate Nurse Program, is an industry leading initiative which is designed to increase the number of specialised nurses in the healthcare system and aid their progression into clinical and management roles within aged care.

Innovative solutionsWere proud to be an active and integral part of Australias healthcare system and we keep working to deliver innovative solutions.

We play an important role in preventive health and chronic disease management. Bupa Health Dialog and The COACH Program help people living with chronic disease to improve their health outcomes. The health tools, calculators and mobile apps we have implemented are targeted at preventive care and helping people to adopt healthier behaviours. Many partnerships established through the Bupa Health Foundation including with major universities in every state, Baker IDI Heart and Diabetes Institute, the Garvan Institute, Cancer Council Victoria and Royal Flying Doctor Service are also focused on preventive healthcare. Through this approach we see immediate benefit to our customers and more broadly a lasting benefit to the health care system.

We believe health innovation and preventive care are essential to helping Australia and New Zealand successfully address their health care challenges today and in the future.

    PLAYI NG A LEAD ROLE

HELPING TO SHAPE THE HEALTHCARE SYSTEM WITH YOU IN MIND

    14 Bupa Annual Review 2012

  • At Bupa we proactively engage with policy makers, public and private healthcare providers and community-based groups. We support research that will help make a distinct difference to health management and practice. We do this because we want what our members want a healthcare environment that supports people to understand, take action to keep healthy, make informed decisions and get the right care in the right place at the right time.

Influencing the healthcare landscapeHealth advocacy is a large part of what we do. Our voice is at the frontline of health reform and policy issues relevant to our customers and is critical to raising awareness about a vast array of public health issues.

2012 has been a significant year for health insurance in Australia, with the Federal Government making a number of changes to the way private health insurance operates. From 1 July 2012 the Australian Government Rebate on private health insurance was income tested and the Medicare Levy Surcharge for high-income earners was increased. Importantly, we have supported our members through this change, actively engaged with key leaders and policy decision makers to help ensure our customers interests are represented at the highest levels and contributed to discussion on social media channels to inform the general public of the implications.

Also, the Federal Government signalled its preferred direction for long-term reform to the funding and structure of Australias aged care system with the announcement of the Living Longer, Living Better reform package. In response, we launched the Home Truths campaign as we were concerned that the proposed reforms would significantly reduce residential aged care subsidies and fail to address silos that exist between community, residential and transitional care. The campaign galvanised the community, who sent over 10,000 postcards to politicians around the country.

In addition to the public campaign, Bupa representatives met privately with a large number of parliamentary members to discuss the impact of the proposed aged care reforms and communicate the views of our residents and their families.

We engage regularly with government to provide expert advice on a range of health and wellness issues. Paul Gregersen, Managing Director, Bupa Care Services Australia, is a member of the Aged Care Financing Authority, a committee that advises the government on aged care funding.

This year, we engaged directly with the Prime Minister, Opposition Leader, the Minister and Shadow Ministers for Health and Aged Care, Treasury representatives from major parties, various cabinet ministers, key independents, senior level bureaucrats and regulators across a range of health and ageing issues. We also contributed to a variety of policy development processes around regulation, pricing, competition, aged care financing

and evidence-based medicine. In the lead up to the September 2013 Australian federal election we will continue to work with both the Opposition and the Government to support and influence the development of their policy platforms.

Accessing the latest advances in healthcareBecause we are part of the global Bupa Group, were able to draw on a wealth of knowledge and experience to help improve the lives of our customers. We leverage our local and global Bupa experience to the benefit of our customers and the healthcare community.

We work closely with influential stakeholders in the private and broader health environments, including groups such as the Australian Medical Association, Australian Medicare Local Alliance as well as health professional groups including the Royal Australian College of General Practitioners, the Australian Research Alliance for Children and Youth, Obesity Australia and the Australian Disease Management Association.

The Bupa Health Foundation also partners with organisations in research, advocacy and health and wellness education to help ensure our customers and all Australians have access to the most up-to-the-minute advances in healthcare. Through 2012 we have worked with Arthritis Australia and leading joint disease experts from around the country to champion the cause of reducing the impact of osteoarthritis on peoples mobility, pain and quality of life. We have also worked with the George Institute to take up the fight against the risk of stroke and heart disease, with the Garvan Institute to stem the impact of osteoporosis, with a number of research teams to help improve cancer outcomes and reduce the prevalence of dementia, and supported Medicare Locals to establish the next generation of primary care in Australia as a way of better managing chronic disease.

A healthcare partner to millions around the worldOur visibility and involvement across media, government, health and broader industry and our willingness to work with all stakeholders in the pursuit of positive heath outcomes is addressing our ambition of being a healthcare partner to many more millions of people around the world.

Through our provision of innovative and accessible health information we are now literally in the hands of millions of people. Our community partnerships such as Bupa Walk to Work Day and Bupa Around the Bay further see us connecting with people and encouraging them to live healthier lifestyles. Were also proud to have partnered with Channel Tens Million Kilo Challenge, through offering expert advice to help tackle the issue of obesity.

At Bupa, we are driven to improve the healthcare systems and devise innovative products, programs and services because we want to empower people to make healthier choices we are committed to helping everyone live healthier, happier lives.

Weve opened our first multicultural retail store in Sydneys World Square, with the intention of better meeting the needs of a rapidly expanding local Chinese community. Our customers really appreciate that we can deliver a personalised and more holistic healthcare experience that is mindful of cultural preferences, explains Store Manager, Alex Lau. The store was designed in line with feng shui principles and offers tailored health and wellbeing education sessions, translated in-store materials and multilingual staff for added support.

At Bupa, we pride ourselves on understanding what is important to our customers and developingservices to meet their health needs.

In 2012, we began the process of transforming our retail network so that we can offer our customers a better in-store experience under the one Bupa brand. We understand that many of our customers prefer to speak about complex healthcare issues in person and our in-store teams are on hand to discuss our health insurance products and health information.

WE UNDERSTAND YOUR NEEDSEvery year Bupa surveys Australians regarding their attitudes towards growing older. This helps us tailor our aged care services to meet their future needs. Our aim is to ensure everyone in our care is able to live the kind of life that best suits them at every stage of the ageing journey. We call it person-centred care.

Bupa BackyardMore than 30 of our care homes boast a Bupa Backyard that is familiar and reminiscent of the Australian lifestyle. Each backyard is designed to benefit all residents but they are particularly valuable for people living with dementia by encouraging them to engage in meaningful moments and to use their long-held abilities and memories.

Whether it be weeding the veggies or hanging out the clothes, these opportunities give a person with dementia purposeful things they can do and achieve and supports their sense of self. In 2012, the Aged Care Standards and Accreditation Agency awarded Bupa four Better Practice Awards; one of these was for our innovative Bupa Backyards initiative.

Bupa Care Services is very pleased to be the major corporate sponsor of Alzheimers Australia and Alzheimers New Zealand. With approximately 70 percent of Bupa residents living with dementia its a cause thats close to our hearts. We have also contributed $800,000 over three years (20112013) towards the National Quality Dementia Care Initiative which fast tracks research projects that have the potential to improve everyday life for people living with dementia. We are world leaders in dementia care and research and proud to be leading the way in developing the future of dementia care in Australia.

    National Volunteering Program

At Bupa we care for, and provide support to, the communities in which we operate and we also offer opportunities for our employees to contribute through our business practices and partnerships.

Every year, our people can use two days under our National Volunteering Program to support their chosen charity or community organisation. Volunteering encourages our people to learn new skills and gain a sense of purpose from giving something back to the community. In 2012, our people volunteered over 20 weeks of their time to activities including helping rebuild homes following the 2009 Victorian bushfires, assisting in childrens hospitals around the country and working with the elderly in Bupa aged care homes.

Teaming up with my colleagues to help rebuild homes certainly gives you a reality check and its great to help out a community in need.

  • A perfect partnership

As the official health partner to the Australian Cricket Team we provide access to healthcare expertise from around the globe. Together, we are promoting good health and wellbeing. It is the perfect partnership. Sport and physical activity are key parts of a healthy lifestyle. With a young family I really appreciate the work Bupa is doing to encourage young Australians to get active. Its important for our childrens health today and in the future, says Mike Hussey.

Life EducationEmpowering children with the knowledge and skills to make good choices will help set them up for future success. That is why we have partnered with Life Education, a leader in delivering high-quality drug and health education to Australian school children. Together we aim to encourage children to learn how to make healthy, safe and positive lifestyle choices.

Each year over 620,000 primary and secondary children in 3,200 schools across Australia participate in a Life Education program. The All Systems Go module, created through a partnership between

Bupa and Life Education, teaches children about the workings of the human body in a fun and interactive way so as to encourage and promote a healthy lifestyle. We have also partnered with Life Education in developing the seven-day Bupa Family Challenge. In 2012 more than 1,600 families were inspired to get more active and improve nutrition while having fun together.

Bupa Walk to Work Day In Australia, physical inactivity is one of the top four preventable risk factors for disease. As part of our ongoing commitment to a healthier community, we encourage all Australians to participate in the Bupa Walk to Work Day. Besides doubling the risk of heart disease, stroke and diabetes, there is evidence that inactivity also increases the risk of bowel and breast cancer. Walking regularly is one of the best things you can do for your health and by walking to work or during your lunch break you are likely to be more productive and less likely to be absent or on sick-leave. Now in its 14th year, Bupa Walk to Work Day encourages people to take the positive step of building regular walking into their daily routines.

Bupa Around the Bay The 20th Bupa Around the Bay was held in 2012 and firmly established this iconic event as Australias premier mass participation one-day ride. With five ride distances it encourages people at all levels of fitness to get involved and shares our vision of encouraging healthy and sustainable lifestyles. In 2012 the event attracted over 17,000 participants, while raising in excess of $1.1 million for The Smith Familys work to help young Australians in need create better futures.

  • BUPA H E A LTH FOUNDATION

MAKING A DIFFERENCEToo often, good ideas never have the chance to make a difference. Through the Bupa Health Foundation we partner with great people with great ideas, and help to make those ideas into reality.

    42 Bupa Annual Review 2012

  • The Bupa Health Foundation is committed to making a difference by playing a leading role in the health system and generating new ideas and approaches that can improve the health of all Australians.

The Foundations work is directed towards partnerships that translate evidence into action, educate the community in health or invest in health programs that impact on policy and practice. In addition, work is focused on areas where there is an urgent need for new ideas to meet the challenge of providing high-quality healthcare.

Over the past seven years, the Bupa Health Foundation has supported over 80 initiatives and invested almost $19 million into health research and health programs across its five key focus areas: wellbeing, managing chronic disease, healthy ageing, empowering people about their health and promoting affordable healthcare.

WellbeingThe Foundation is supporting programs to encourage people to take up and maintain healthy behaviours at home, at school and in the workplace. The Foundation is proud of its range of health programs targeted towards encouraging younger Australians to get active and learn to enjoy exercise.

Chronic diseaseChronic disease is one of the biggest challenges facing health systems worldwide. The Foundation is partnering in projects that will help to tackle conditions like skin cancer and cardiovascular disease. In particular, work is focused on helping people to manage their conditions more effectively to help improve patient outcomes and reduce health costs.

Healthy ageingAustralias population is ageing at a rapid rate and will continue to do so in the coming decades. The health, independence and wellbeing of older people are becoming issues of increasing importance and priority for our communities. The Foundation supports a range of initiatives that aim to develop evidence-based knowledge that will help realise the potential of healthy ageing.

Empowering people about their healthAt Bupa, we recognise that if we are empowered with information and confidence we can take the right steps to look after our health. The Foundation is investing in work that empowers us in our health, focusing on where the need for empowerment is greatest, like in youth mental health, where information is key to getting the help required.

Promoting affordable healthcareThe Australian health sector is under increasing financial pressure from an ageing population, a rise in chronic disease, advances in health technology, as well as rising demand and consumer expectations of health services. Bupa Health Foundation is exploring health policy initiatives that may ease the financial burden on healthcare services and strengthen the sustainability of Australias mixed public and private health system. Minimising high-risk lifestyle behaviours and investigating preventative measures are also key ways to reduce potential health costs.

More and more, together with our partners, we are developing a reputation for innovative and pioneering work that will truly make a difference in the important objective of building a healthier Australian community.

Bringing dental care to remote regions

Without access to regular dental treatment, people in remote areas are less likely to care to preserve healthy teeth, says Dr John Setchell, General Manager of Health Services, Royal Flying Doctor Service. Having dental treatment available locally makes a huge difference in ensuring minor complaints dont create or exacerbate other health problems.

The Bupa Health Foundation partners with many leading health organisations and researchers and invests in initiatives that will deliver community benefits in our five key focus areas. Long-standing partnerships are held with many organisations that are leaders in their field including Alzheimers Australia, Cancer Council Victoria, Royal Flying Doctors Service and many Australian universities.

The Foundation is committed to fostering and developing talented new health researchers in Australia. Its annual Emerging Health Researcher of the Year Award acknowledges the valuable contribution of new health researchers to the improvement of health outcomes for all Australians. In 2012, Health Award recipients were acknowledged for their work in advancing research in long-term health including in skin cancer, autism, mental illness, sleep apnoea and macular degeneration.

    44 Bupa Annual Review 2012

  • Pilot oral health program building healthier teethRoyal Flying Doctor Service and The University of AdelaideNo matter where you live we believe everyone should be able to access great healthcare and for the past 12 months we have given communities in remote parts of South Australia access to dental services through the Remote Oral Health Care Pilot program.

The two-year trial sees supervised final year dental and oral health students from The University of Adelaide flown in to provide dental services and oral health education to remote communities. Dental screening and simple treatments like fluoride application for children and those living with chronic diseases such as diabetes are also provided.

The program has revealed that young children in the remote communities were two-and-a-half times more likely to have cavities, missing or filled teeth when compared with their city counterparts. For some children seeking treatment had previously meant a full-day commute to the nearest dentist.

Initial results strongly reinforce the positive impact of a preventative approach and the benefits of enhancing oral health education. Encouragingly, four- to six-year-old children who received fluoride treatment have re-presented to the program six months later with no new cavities.

As well as providing much needed dental care to remote communities, the clinics also give final-year dental students valuable practical experience and encourage the development of remote dentists of the future.

Creating a national action plan for young AustraliansAustralian Research Alliance for Children and YouthWhen it comes to the wellbeing of Australian children and young people the evidence tells us there is a great deal more we could be doing to build a brighter future.

The Nest is a landmark initiative that will see the creation of a national plan for coordinated action that is aimed at improving the health, wellbeing and life opportunities of all young Australians (024 years).

Created through a partnership between Bupa Health Foundation and the Australian Research Alliance for Children and Youth (ARACY), a thorough evidence review and a national public consultation program has resulted in the creation of a national action plan for young Australians due for release in 2013.

The national plan will assist NGOs, business, researchers, governments and communities decide on what are the most important objectives and game changers for the advancement and wellbeing of all young Australians and implement the actions most likely to shape the best possible future for young Australians.

Online program to tackle pain managementAustralian and New Zealand College of Anaesthetists Faculty of Pain Management and Royal Australian College of General PractitionersChronic pain is a debilitating condition for over 3.2 million Australians often interfering with their ability to undertake everyday activities and live healthy lives. Disturbingly, its also estimated that up to 80 percent of chronic pain sufferers are not receiving effective treatment, which could help improve their quality of life.

In an effort to provide a more holistic approach to pain management the Bupa Health Foundation has partnered with the Australian and New Zealand College of Anaesthetists Faculty of Pain Medicine and the Royal Australian College of General Practitioners. Together, they have developed a new online program, which provides primary health care professionals with access to the best available evidence and tools in effective pain management.

The online program will be accessible by 20,000 General Practitioners and will be of particular importance to regional and rural health care providers who have limited access to professional development opportunities. Content will focus on a holistic approach to pain management and the importance of early treatment of acute pain to help prevent the transition to a chronic condition.

The Bupa Health Foundation has long been committed to addressing chronic pain. In 2008, the Foundation commissioned the first ever study to determine the true economic cost of persistent pain in Australia, which revealed a massive annual cost of $34.3 billion. Following on from this landmark study, the Foundation supported the 2008 National Pain Summit and subsequent development of the National Pain Strategy, the first comprehensive initiative in Australia to support improved assessment and treatment of all forms of pain.

The online education program is an example of how the Foundation continues in its advocacy efforts to influence more effective pain management for Australians.
