EMPLOYMENT EXPLODES IN DECEMBER WITH 312,000 JOBS ADDED; UNEMPLOYMENT RATE UP SLIGHTLY TO 3.9%Employers added a robust 312,000 jobs in December, nearly
double the 180,000 predicted by analysts. The unemployment
rate ticked up slightly to 3.9 percent. Healthcare added an
astounding 50,000 jobs for the month: 38,000 in ambulatory
care, 7,000 in hospitals and 5,000 in nursing and residential
care centers. Healthcare added a total of 346,000 jobs in 2018,
up more than 20 percent from the 284,000 gained in 2017.
Job gains for October were revised up from +237,000 to
+274,000, and gains in November were revised up from
+155,000 to +176,000, for a total of 58,000 more jobs than
previously reported for those months. After these revisions,
job gains averaged 254,000 per month over the last three
months. A total of 2.6 million jobs were added in 2018, up
from 2.2 million added in 2017.
HEALTHCARE INDUSTRY CREATES 346,000 OF 2.6 MILLION TOTAL JOBS ADDED IN 2018Demand for healthcare workers remained strong throughout
2018, with the industry accounting for more than 13 percent of
all jobs created during the year. The aging population, chronic
disease increases, and healthcare provider retirements continue
to be the biggest drivers of demand. In March, the Bureau of
Labor Statistics published additional healthcare employee data.
The ten largest occupations in the U.S. healthcare workforce
currently comprise more than eight million workers, including
roughly three million nurses. The majority of those nurses are
employed by hospitals.
