An Associates Degree, also known as a "two-year degree", is just that: a basic college degree that can be earned in approximately two years (if attending full-time). awarded by a technical school or a community college, 2 year degree
A Bachelors Degree, also known as a "four-year" degree, is awarded at both colleges and universities.
A Masters Degree is a Graduate Degree. What this means is that one is (usually) extending their education beyond their Bachelors Degree.
A Ph.D., also known as a Doctorate, may require additional 6- 8 years.
• Certification, Registration, Licensure• Certification- means that a person has fulfilled requirements of
education. I.e. Diploma• Registration-A board administers examinations and maintains a
current list (registry) of qualified personnel in a given health care area.
• Licensure- a license is required for each state. Licensed positions include physicians, dentist, RN
• Accreditation- Make sure your college is accredited, It like a Grade for that school. JCAHO is the accreditation for hospitals and health inspectors give a grade for restaurants.
• CEU- Continuing Education Units required to renew license.
• Orthodontists- alignment or straightening of the teeth
• Oral surgery- surgery on teeth, mouth, and jaw• Periodontics- treatment and prevention of
diseases of the gums, bone and structures supporting the teeth.
• Prosthodontics- replacement of natural teeth with artificial teeth or dentures.
• Dental Hygienists- work under supervision of the dentist
• Perform preliminary examinations of the teeth and mouth
• Remove stains and deposits from teeth• Expose and develop x-rays• Dental laboratory technicians- repair dentures,
crowns, bridges and orthodontic appliances.• Works under written orders from a dentist.
Dentists diagnose and treat problems with teeth and tissues in the mouth, along with giving advice and administering care to help prevent future problems. They remove tooth decay, fill cavities, examine x rays, place protective plastic sealants on children’s teeth, straighten teeth, and repair fractured teeth. They also perform corrective surgery on gums and supporting bones to treat gum diseases. They also administer anesthetics and write prescriptions for antibiotics and other medications
Dentists use a variety of equipment, including x-ray machines, drills, mouth mirrors, probes, forceps, brushes, and scalpels. They wear masks, gloves, and safety glasses to protect themselves and their patients from infectious diseases.
In 2006, there were 56 dental schools accredited by the American Dental Association’s (ADA’s) Commission on Dental Accreditation. Dental schools require a minimum of 2 years of college-level predental education prior to admittance. Most dental students have at least a bachelor’s degree before entering dental school, although a few applicants are accepted to dental school after 2 or 3 years of college and complete their bachelor’s degree while attending dental school.

Plastic Surgeon • A Plastic Surgeon is a surgeon who performs operations on individuals for
functional or aesthetic treatments. Plastic surgeons may focus on reconstructive surgery to reduce scarring and disfigurement as a result of accidents or birth defects. Plastic surgeons may also focus on cosmetic surgery which is typically unrelated to medical conditions but is bothersome to the patient. The term "plastic", refers to the molding and shaping of surgery, not the use of actual plastic.
• Requirements of becoming a surgeon: Following medical school and residency, surgeons take an additional five years of specialized training in the field of general surgery. Surgeons must then be approved by the American Board of Plastic Surgery to begin plastic surgery residency. The training of plastic surgery encompasses both functional and cosmetic surgical procedures. Course work includes basic science related to plastic surgery including pathology, physiology, biochemistry, and anatomy. Training also includes extensive exposure to care of emergencies, shock, wound healing, blood replacement, pharmacology, anesthetics, and chemotherapy.
