• Conducted by NatCen and UCL
• 2008 report: Physical activity• 2009 report: currently being written• 2010 survey: fieldwork in progress
• From 2011, becomes The Health and Social Care Survey

• Sample size around 15,500 adults, and child boost sample
• Focus on physical activity: • Self-reported measures• Accelerometry
• Also a measure of physical fitness among adults

• Sample size around 8,000 adults, and 6,000 children
• Focus on respiratory disease: • Questions about asthma, COPD• Measures of lung function – new high tech
spirometers • Also questions on sexual health, dental health
and wellbeing
• Currently in field, reporting end of 2011

Health and Social Care Survey 2011
• Replaces the HSE from 2011
• Retaining core elements of the HSE design and content
• Review of core content – every year:• General health, smoking, drinking, height and weight• Nurse visit: BP, waist and hip, blood sample, child
saliva
• Alternate years:• Questionnaire: Fruit and veg or GHQ12 and EQ5D• Nurse: Adult urine sample or adult saliva sample
• New social care question module

HSCS 2011 content
• Sample size around 8,000 adults
• No child boost currently planned
• Expect focus to be on CVD: • Continue trends from 1994, 1998, 2003,
2006
• Will include self-reported usual drinking behaviour and 7-day drinking diary
• Currently in development, reporting end of 2012

Physical activity
Chief Medical Officer’s recommendations• For adults:
At least 30 minutes of at least moderate intensity activity on five or more days per week
Accumulated in bouts of at least 10 minutes
• For children: At least 60 minutes of at least moderate
intensity physical activity each day

• Self-reported and objective measures
• Self-report questions for adults enhanced for 2008: • Captured bouts of 10 minutes of activity• More detail about activity at work, and sedentary
time• Refined questions about swimming, gym
• Children’s self-report questions completely revised for 2008:• New categories of formal and informal sports and
activities• Recall over the last seven days, • Asked about each day, exact time spent

Accelerometry
• Sub-samples of adults and children aged 4+
• Asked to wear the accelerometer for 7 days• Measures vertical movement:
• Under-represents activities such as cycling, rowing
• Cannot be worn for swimming • At least 10 hours wear for a ‘valid day’• Daily averages calculated from at least 4 days
of wear
