RESPIRATORY CARE/THERAPY HEALTH SCIENCE EDUCATION A Respiratory Therapist is a healthcare provider who helps manage and treat individuals who have cardiopulmonary diseases, sleep disorders, premature infants, asthma, and Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease. Respiratory Therapists work alongside physicians, nurses, and other members of the health care team to help develop treatment plans for patients that have trouble with airway protection and clearing pulmonary secretions. RTs also maintain patients on life support and help in emergency settings throughout the hospital. RTs deliver emergency care to heart attack and drowning victims, or people in shock. Some RTs work in-home care. In this capacity, they are responsible for setting up ventilators or other life support equipment and instruct caretakers how to use them. • Majority of work is in hospitals, or nursing care facilities and physicians’ offices • Majority of shift is spent on your feet • Will work closely with RNs, physicians, surgeons, and medical assistants • Most positions are full-time, but expect evening, night, or weekend hours • Treat a wide range of patients (infant - elderly) • Consult with physicians and other health care staff to help develop and modify individual patient care plans • Provide complex therapy requiring a great deal of independent judgement • Evaluate patients by performing limited physical examinations and conducting diagnostic tests • Treat patients by using oxygen or oxygen mixtures, chest physiotherapy, and aerosol medications • Connect patients who cannot independently breathe to ventilators that deliver presurized oxygen • Perform regular checks on patients and equipment • Supervise respiratory therapy technicians or RCPs WORK ENVIRONMENT TASKS SALARY DATA National Median Wage: $59,710/year (BLS.gov 2017) Abilene Campus 717 E. • Participate in student advisement with the Respiratory Care/Therapy Department Professor prior to applying.

• Complete all prerequisite courses with a minimum grade of a “C” as listed in the Respiratory Care/Therapy degree plan.

• Complete the program application for the semester entry and due to the Department Professor.

• Complete the Entrance Exam: TSI (Texas Success Initiative) assessment.• Complete a Background check/Drug Urinalysis: Certain convictions may result in denial (should you

have a conviction of a Class B or above, please contact the Health Science Assistant). A 10-panel urine drug screen is required. Please use Any Lab Test Now and let them know you are a Cisco College Student.

• Satisfy healthcare agency requirements by providing a copy of your immunization record (titer, immunization, or physician’s documentation of illness) showing proof of a negative Tuberculin skin test and the following immunizations: - Flu vaccine- yearly - Hepatitis B- Series of 3 (takes up to 6 months to complete) - Tuberculin skin test-yearly - Mumps, Measles, Rubella- x2 - Tetanus, Diphtheria, Pertussis- TDAP - Varicella- x2
