Health Monitoring Tests FITNESS TRAINING AND TESTING
Recap
In groups come up with important points which we talked about last week
Feedback to the group
By the end of the session you will be able to
Measure blood pressure Measure heart rate Measure lung function Explain what the importance of each of the
tests are Complete each of the tests on your client and
record the results
What are health monitoring tests?
Tests that ensure clients are able to take part in physical activity with no risks to their health.
The tests carried out are: Heart rate, blood pressure and lung function Waist to hip ratio and Body mass index BMI
Heart Rate (HR)
Measured manually using the radial artery in the wrist.
Measured via a blood pressure machine Heart rate is measured by beats per minute
BPM The average resting heart rate for a male is
68bpm The average resting heart rate for a female is
72bpm
Heart Rate cont.
Males generally have larger hearts that females which can then pump a larger amount of oxygenated blood around the body, this is why the resting heart rate is lower than females.
A high resting heart rate is >100bpm
Blood Pressure BP
Blood pressure can be measured using a digital blood pressure monitor
These machines provide the reading of systolic blood pressure and diastolic blood pressure mmhg
Systolic blood pressure is the highest pressure within the blood stream which occurs when the heart contracts
Blood pressure cont.
Diastolic blood pressure is the lowest pressure in the blood stream when the heart is relaxed and filling with blood
Average BP 120/80mmHg Above average BP 140/90mmHg High blood pressure 160/100mmHg
Lung Function
Spirometry is used to determine is an individual has a chest or lung problem.
Spirometer is a handheld device used to test the amount of air you can blow out against time this measures your lung function
The spirometer provides information about your lung function.
Waist to hip ratio
This ratio helps to determine levels of obesity and those at risk of heart disease
It’s a very simple test to carry out Measure the waist and hips in cm and divide by each
other Average for male 0.90 to 0.95 anything below is excellent
anything above is high Average for female 0.80 to 0.90 anything below is
excellent anything above is high
Body mass index
BMI is a measurement of body composition and is often used to determine if someone is overweight
It is only an estimate and does not take into account the persons frame size or muscle mass
You can use an online calculator to determine BMI
Normal BMI is between 18.5 and 24.9
Your task
Complete each of the tests on your client. There is a set of instructions with each of the
tests that tells you how to carry out the tests There is also a results table fill this out and
keep it safe
