Eurostat data

• Eurostat is the statistical office of the European Union situated in Luxembourg.

• Key task – to provide the European Union with statistics at European level that enable comparisons between countries and regions.

• Eurostat's role is to consolidate the data and ensure they are comparable, using harmonized methodology.

• Eurostat does not collect data at national level. This is done in Member States by their statistical authorities.

Data on health

• Eurostat collects data from administrative sources and by use of surveys

• In health, variety of domains is covered:

• Health status (self-perceived health, life expectancy, causes of death)

• Health determinants – lifestyles (tobacco and alcohol consumption, physical activities, fruit and vegetable cons.)

• Healthcare human and physical resources (physicians, dentists, nurses, hospital beds, medical technology)

• Healthcare activities (hospital discharges and length of stay, consultations, preventive services)

• Health care expenditure

• Joint Research centre (JRC) coordinates European Cancer Information System with data on cancer

Eurostat data on Health care

• Data are collected annually through a Joint questionnaire together with OECD and WHO

• A joint data collection reduces burden to data providers

• Ensures high degree of comparability due to internationally agreed definitions

• Data comes from administrative sources

• Health care resources (physical, technical)

availability of medical technology

• Health care activities (preventive care, hospital aggregates) use of medical technology

ECIS: European Cancer Information System

EC Initiative requested by Council of the EU, endorsed by EP and

coordinated by EC's Joint Research Centre

TO PROVIDE TIMELY COMPARABLE DATA ON CANCER BURDEN

• evidence for development and monitoring of policies to prevent and treat cancer

• resource for epidemiological research

• promotion of citizens empowerment

Conclusions from available data

• Analysis can be made on:

• Availability of medical technology equipment, in absolute number or in relation to the size of population;

• Use of medical technology by number of examinations done or in relation to the size of population

• Intensity of use: examinations done / number of units

• Annual data based on administrative sources enables comparison across time and across countries – good national systems is a key

• Comply with the definitions - any deviations from the agreed definitions clearly indicated

• Countries should work towards closing data gaps
