The Communication Continuum in Health Coaching

December 8, 2015 12:00 PM – 1:00 PM

Regina McCoy, MPH, MCHES, CHC and Gracie Lee Weaver, MPH, CHES, CHC

Description

Health Coaches must be able to communicate in a way that emphasizes the

power of the client. These three communication styles –directing, guiding,

and following – are a continuum within which a coach may operate. In this

webinar, we’ll discuss each of the three communication styles and situations

which call for the coach to adapt their communication to meet the client

where they are.

Objectives

Describe aspects of each of the three communication styles.

Assess where a coach may be within the communication continuum.

Identify an appropriate mix of communication styles to address various situations.

client change talk and reflect it back to clients in an effort to further explore

behavior change. Change talk refers to client self-statements that indicate a

desire, ability, reason, or need for the client to change. Learn how

motivational interviewing strategies can help to elicit change talk among

clients.
