Visit the birthplace of natural water.

The main ingredient for skincare is ‘Water’.Skincare products of MUJI* are made with natural water pumped out from the cave in Kamaishi, Iwate Prefecture.

Kamaishi, Iwate Prefecture. Mt. Omine which is 1,147 meters above sea level is located around the border of Tono City. The mountain has an existing nature where iron ore is used to be mined. An untouched thriving virgin forest for as far as one can see, not a single man-made object in sight. Visiting during end of winter, when walking along the place covered with snow, streams are running here and there, while wild deer are staring at us with curiosity. Rain or snowmelt flowing at this area is filtered through the layers of limestone, magnetic ore and granite, and is becoming clear little by little after several decades.

A drop of water flowing through the rocks for several decades.

Several tunnels are dug for mining of iron ore in this mountain. The entrance of the gallery to draw water is 600 meters down from the mountaintop. About 20 minutes-ride in a tramcar from the entrance, heading for about 3 km horizontally, we will get to the deep and quiet mountains. The water was pouring forth quietly and steadily between the rocks ahead. It tastes mild and is easy to drink when the water is tasted on our palms. The silky water has very fine particles and little minerals. Mild alkaline water with the same pH readings as human tears are easily soaked into the the skin. At the water intake point, stainless steel pipes are inserted into the rocks and the water is collected without the use of any water pumps and purely on natural pressure. The collected water will undergo heat treatment for about 9 seconds at 120 degrees and filled into the tank without being exposed to air at all. Finally, the water is delivered immediately to the manufacturing factory for the skincare products.

Water is packed in a new bag after each heat treatment of 120 degrees without being exposed to air.

Tools Cosmetic Cutting Tools with long lasting sharpness made in ‘The Town of Cutting Tools’ Seki City, Gifu Prefecture.

The cutting tools of Seki, which are said that the industry was developed because swordsmiths gathered during the Warring States period, are known for its sharpness with the strong core and the quality not easily nicking. Presently, it is still mentioned as one of the world’s biggest three origins together with Solingen in Germany and Sheffield in the UK.

There are about 450 cutting tool manufacturers in Seki City and the surprising numbers of people work on its manufacture, despite of the industrial products. The superior products are born while cooperating with each manufacture to improve the skills.

Make-up Tools

The s tee l p la te o f the proto type o f the scissors removed from the press, proceeds to sharpening and polishing through the process to shape nicely, called trimming. After cleaning, removing the dust and quenching, it tempers to improve the hardness and stickiness. After that, the handwork is intently executed. The end of it which is thinner than the baby finger, is struck to wind to make the good angle. Sharpening the 2 edges at the same time makes them consistently beautiful until the end of the edges. The last step of the process after about 30 processes, is the quality inspection. Checking both its appearances and sharpness are executed. The cloth is rapidly cut into strips while making the delightful snipping sound.
